I have a dumb question. Is the 556 bolt carrier group the same as a 223 bolt carrier group?

Yes.

The only difference would be if you got an Ar-15 carrier or an M16 carrier.

Yes. The BCG is the same. The barrel would be slightly different on a 223 vs 556.
