Looking for a scope to put on my SFAR.
Doesn't have to be a LPVO (as in starts at 1x)
Rifle is a Ruger SFAR 16" for hunting/homestead/self defense use in Southeast Idaho. If you've seen GarandThumb's recent made-in-Idaho videos you have a good idea of the type of terrain we have.
Want:
milling reticle
illuminated dot (doesn't have to be daylight bright)
Mil adjustments not MOA
Ideally less than 20 ounces
Less than $1000
I like Leupold's Mark 3HD 3-9x40 P5 Illum. FireDot TMR https://www.leupold.com/mark-3hd-3-9x40-p5-illum-firedot-tmr but I haven't be able to find a decent review on it.
What are your thoughts/recommendations?

I do like the Leupold VX-R Patrol Firedot 3-9x, which should be equivalent to the VX3.

Lot's of good options in this price bracket. Your weight requirement of 20 oz is a little tough, though.
My top pick to get pretty close would be the Trijicon Credo 2.5-10x36 (https://www.eurooptic.com/Trijicon-Credo-2-10x36-FFP-w-Red-MRAD-Precision-Tree-30mm-Matte-Black-Riflescope.aspx), which comes in at 23 oz.
If you were willing to sacrifice the weight, then there's a few more worth looking at.
The Brownells MPO 3-18x50 (https://www.brownells.com/optics/scopes/rifle-scopes/match-precision-optic~-mpo-3-18x50mm-rifle-scope/) gives more magnification, Japanese manufacture, and comes in surprisingly affordable for what you get ($699). But it's heavier at 36 oz.
I have the new Primary Arms GLx 3-18x44 (https://www.primaryarms.com/primary-arms-glx-3-18x44-ffp-rifle-scope-acss-athena-bpr-mil-reticle) on my desk that I'm liking quite a bit. It's made in the Philippines like the Vortex Viper PST series. Lots of intelligent features for a DMR-type rifle, though I'm admittedly not the biggest fan of the chevron center aiming point compared to the more traditional dot or cross. It's 29.6 oz, which is heavier than the target but not terrible given that it's also a 34mm tube and good all-around objective size. Fair price, too, at $749.
Trijicon Credo 2-10x36mm meet all your criteria except weight as it comes in at 23 oz.

Vortex Viper PST Gen II 2-10x32
It is built like a tank and has very clear glass. The price is very good for what you are getting.

I wonder if you can get a vortex lht down to your price range used or with discounts.

@ 26.3 oz it's also weighs like a tank......:D
Although I do like the simple reticle on the Vortex PST 2-10x32mm a bit better than Trijicon's and it's $748. price point is very appealing. But I bought the Credo,

You can get the LHT's close to 1K at $1150.00 , but unfortunately all that light weight and nice glass comes with a 2nd focal plane only penalty.

I run one of these on my 12" 6.5 Grendel and it's a great scope for the money, and having 2x on the low end is nice for the OP's stated use including self defense. It's a little heavier than the OP request, but well built.

This is a great deal on an awesome scope. Personally, I only run FFP scopes (not a big SFP fan), but if SFP is fine for you, this is the one to get in your price range IMO.

Thee PST is also a lot brighter (Daytime Bright) and has a Parallax adjustment. That is a huge thing past 300 meters.
And go to the gym if it is too heavy....... :jester:

I too liked mine. Well made and does everything you need. I got rid of mine when I got a Leupold MK5 2-10.
