Which is better for HD with a 10.5"
American Eagle 63 grn Soft Point - Skew XMAE223SP - chronos 2,426 out of my gun
or
Black Hills 75 gr HP - Red Box - chronos 2,319 out of my gun
30 yrds max distance
TIA
Any chance of getting some Hornady 5.56 75 grain? Might be able to sqeeze a little more velocity out of that little barrel.

These are what I have on hand so I am just looking for info between the two.
From what I have read, min velocity for a 75 grn is 2,200+/-.
Good luck
MZB,
Just curious if you realize that there is a difference in the .223/ 5.56 loadings. The TAP ammo with the item# 8126N is actually loaded to 5.56 specs and should probably be around 2300 fps from your 10.5. Don't hold me to that though. I am no ballistics expert but I would say that the 75gr. HP would do more damage than the SP. I would try and ping Doc Roberts about this.

you talkin about the steel cased hornady 75 "training ammo" stuff?

That training ammo is meant to simulate, at a reduced cost, their actual TAP loading but do so at a reduced cost so that PDs and such that are issuing the TAP aren't burning it up in training.
I assume that what Mark meant was the actual TAP.
I believe Mark was referring to Hornady T2 75 grain TAP.

75 grains...2,850+ muzzle velocity (16")
PS: I would go for the BlackHills myself.

Yes. The #8126N that Guns mentioned. I can never remeber that code.
That stuff has reached such mythological status, especially on TOS, that the price has gotten ridiculous. There are some over there (and elsewhere) that act like if you're not using #8126N then you must not be serious about self defense.
I always defer back to DocGKR
Only after proper foundational and ongoing repetitive refresher training, cultivating warrior mind-set, and ensuring weapon system reliability do you need to worry about ammunition selection. Most folks would be far better off practicing with what they have, rather than worrying about what is "best". As long as you know your what your weapon and ammo can realistically accomplish, it is all just a matter of training and shot placement. I would much rather go into battle with a guy who practices 15,000 rounds a year using generic 55 gr FMJ out of his old M16A1 than with some guy that has the latest state-of-the-art ammo and rifle, but only shoots 500 rounds a year.

Shit! I should sell my measly 3 boxes. I bought those to mess with, but never got around to firing it.
mark,
You may qualify for the LE/MIL price which is 154.00 for 200rds. delivered. I bought 400 prior to R/R and it's in the safe.

Yeah. I got the form and everything. I just haven't got around to it. I wonder if Hornady is even in stock at this point.
mark,
I am pretty sure that they do. Call Kathy the LE rep and she can tell you. When I ordered mine I had about a 2 week wait which was no big deal.

At the distance involved, put two in the invader's upper chest and it won't matter which two they are.

Indeed. I just run M193 for HD. #8126N it too expensive to be killing bad guys with!

Iraqgunz - yes, I am aware of the difference and while I haven't dug around for info that is +/- 150 fps of what I was thinking the net gain was between the two.
AlphaSierra - 100%
MarkM - too spendy - LOL
The impetus was two fold. One that power point that is floating around of the 2006 PA LE shootout in which a highly motivated individual ambushed LE. Subject was shot 16 times with an M4 (TAP 55s and 75s) and 13 were through and throughs. They wrestled this kid into cuffs BTW. I have also gone back and read up on some SP loadings including this particular round (as offered by Speer).
Second - this is what I have on hand.
In summary - between GKR (knowing how to use what you got) and AlphaS - I concurr. However I did swap out the 75s for the 63s on my bedside SBR.
Good luck
