Hi all,

I currently have a 16” SR-15 and the newer KAC PRT can for it. I recently mounted a NF ATACR1-8 on it as well. I was thinking about adding an SBR in 5.56 to my collection and was looking at either going 11.5 or 14.5 with KAC. I see the uppers available but I don’t think I can buy one and then get a stamp for my existing KAC lower attached to my 16” SR15, can I?

I’m on a waitlist for an 11.5” SR15 currently but we all know how that works. Then again, I got the chance to buy mine rather quickly 5 years ago.

What can I legally do here? Wait out a full 11.5” SR15, or can I register my current lower as an SBR?

Sure you can. Why not? That's what my SBRs all were... 16" or longer originally.

Obviously I’d need a stamp for it if I plan to put a 14.5 or 11.5 KAC upper on it I’m just wondering can I form 1 it and call it a day? Or do I need an entirely new lower?

Yeah you can F1 it. Every SBR I know is that way. The F4 SBRs are cool too, but F1 is better because at least you have the rifle until you can add the shorty to the top of it.

Thanks!

I may actually just put a 14.5” upper on it instead since I run this rifle with the 1-8 LPVO now and suppressed. I’d assume any difference in accuracy would be neglible. Plus I already have a 10.5” SBR.

If you’re going to SBR, you should probably just get the 11.5. A 14.5 would be a waste. You could get the 14.5 P&W and avoid the NFA altogether. You’re not going to lose accuracy with the 11.5. You will lose some velocity and max effective range but that’s likely a moot point.

Should I go with 14.5, would the Atacr 1-8 be overkill or is an LPVO perfect for 14.5?

1-8 is great for a 14.5, and would even be good on an 11.5 if you shoot good 77 or 69 gr ammo. To DoubleW's point though, they make a pin and weld 14.5 that would require no NFA stamp hassle.

I just stamped a lower on Form1 and it was about 60 days. Mine was just laying around but either way, Form 1 it and be done. A 1-8 is great and you could offset or top off a RDS if you wanted.

I'm hesitant for the 11.5 since now I've heard that there is some interference with running the gun suppressed and shimming would be required to avoid contact of the suppressor with the MLOK rail. Being I have the new PRT suppressor, it is short and doesn't add a whole lot to the length of the rifle I'm wondering if I should stick with the 16" upper. I think the only other differences other than the 1.5" shorter length is the new 3.2 chrome bolt and the ambi charging handles they put on the new uppers.

Then again, when I bought this about 5 years ago I paid about $1900 for the entire rifle and the uppers are going for more than that now. Crazy.

Here’s my rifle as it stands currently

You can have an SBR and suppressor in NY?

Yes, as long as your active LEO and I believe if you reside outside the 5 boroughs.

I have the opportunity to buy either the 14.5 upper kit OR the 11.5 complete rifle for under MSRP. This is way too tough. Being I have my LMT 10.5” 300BLK already I don’t really have the need for another SBR. And I can’t decide if I really want to drop down to 14.5” although with the can I think the 1.5” could give some extra breathing room. I can’t decide, hardest decision I’ve had to made in a while.

Here’s an idea. Buy a BCM lower, form 1 it, Geissele trigger and 2 Centurion Uppers (11.5 CHF FBI & a 14.5 LW CHF) and still have money left over. And save yourself the headache of spending $6k and waiting a year on something marginally better.

Or just get an LMT MARS-L and register that.

I put a MARS-L under my 16" mod2 upper because I got f*%#}ng tired of waiting for an SR15 lower to appear.
