Another legend gone. At least he got the quiet life he earned, for awhile any way.

I gotta imagine Forest Service would be a nice for a man like him.

I fought fire for the forest service during the summers of 06 through 09 in eastern Oregon and knew several people who had worked with him at some point. They all had nothing but good things to say about him. A couple of them had the have you hugged your rifle today shirts.

Probably felt quite, uh, comfortable in that environment! Per Wiki: "On Valentine's Day 1969, Mawhinney encountered an enemy platoon and killed 16 PAVN soldiers with head shots." You rocked!

RIP warrior.

Not to derail or begrudge Chuck in the slightest, but Adelbert Waldron (U.S. Army) edged him out at 109 confirmed kills for Vietnam. I was shocked to see Chris Kyle had like 160 during the GWOT.....I knew he was obviously a damned good shot but jeez, that is a helluva tally.

Seen a few claims of suicide(and search of his name had a blurb of cause of death as firearm), but no details on why.

Jeez I hope not. Father Time? He gets us all eventually. By one's own hand? That sucks (if true).

You are right, and I should have mentioned that. I just edited my lead sentence to reflect that.

I met him and Carlos Hathcock in the early 90s at Camp Lejeune as they were signing swag for some fundraiser. I did get an autographed pic of Hathcock.

When Mawhinney got out of the Corps he pretty much went underground, and it wasn't until people started writing about his accomplishments that he came out of the woodwork and started telling his stories. Both men were just legends.
