I indulged myself for my birthday, and picked up this well cared for Smith and Wesson M28 Highway Patrolman .357 Magnum.

A "working man's" version of the Model 27, it's got a couple centuries left in it, built when things were made to last.

I've got a Kramer horsehide scabbard coming for it.

I have two of them, one being a former TX DPS issue gun, and they are about as good as a revolver can get!

I was talking to a co-worker the other day who is another old time retired LEO like me and we both agreed that the world would be a better place if things were much more simple and straightforward and if we did our deer huntin' with a .30-'06 and our policin' with a .357 Magnum.

I carried a 6" M-28 for ten years (and bought it when my agency went to autos). When you pulled that out on a BG, they knew you meant business.:D

We had a family friend (RIP) who carry a Model 28 in the pocket of his bib overalls.

He was the only guy I ever knew who used an N-frame Smith as a pocket gun.

Now you need some magnas to complete the look.

Awesome. I love the classic N-frames. I think they have the perfect balance of craftsmanship, styling and functionality.

I only have one (3rd Model Hand Ejector in .44 Special) but it's the one handgun I'll NEVER sell.

Congrats!

Very nice pickup. That will make a great wheel gun for years to come. I have been eying a 29 for a few weeks and if it sits much longer I might be forced to make them a offer.;)
It would be my only .44 magnum

I currently have a 4" and a 6". The actions clean up nice and they handle recoil well. I have had 4 other ones over the last 40 years - I tried to break them but I could not wear them out. They were a great value new.

Update to a necro thread.......

Turns out the revolver was manufactured in 1966.

I installed some Eagle Heritage rosewood grips on the old Model 28, they look like the old magna grips but feel much better. The Kramer scabbard is also a great revolver holster.

They really are nice. I picked them up at a gun show a little while ago, so I could hand select.

They make them for round butts as well, so you could slap a set on that very nice Mountain Gun of yours.

I spent a summer living with grandparents in SE Indiana when I was 15. My grandparents were heavy into the Church of Christ. I started dated the Preacher's daughter (she was hot). Preacher owned a 4" model 28 S&W. He was born and raised in the hills of W. Virginia. As he knew I liked guns, he showed me his revolver.

One night he showed up at our house with a women and her kids. Preacher hides her there. Her husband beat her half to death. Local LEO's did nothing (I'm current a LEO with 18 years in, so not anti-LEO).

The preacher was concerned, as he knew the husband, and expected him to try to make the preacher tell where the wife was stashed.

The preacher carried his model 28 under his bib-overhauls for several weeks. He felt the need to protect his "Flock". The man was built like a WWF wrestler. He took his faith seriously, Bible in one hand, Model 28 in the other!

As he was dirt poor, the 6 rounds in the gun were from different manufactures. I scraped up the money and bought him a box of newly manufactured JHP's.

The Model 28 4" gun has had a soft spot for me ever since.

The things are built like tanks.

After reading this, I thing I will look for one, only to honer a man of God who was willing to stand his ground to protect the innocent.

Reminds me of the old saying, "Beware of the man with only one gun, he may know how to use it!"

Great stories and nice M28's.

I found this M28 no dash on consignment in a shop for song. Bluing gone and rusted and pitted due to being stored by the owner in a sock. Hammer and trigger finish trashed as well. The cosmetics aside, the action was smooth and solid so I picked it up.

I had a friend do a simple bead blast and matte blue to hide the pitting damage. Found a set of Fitz Gunfighters for it. Rides in a El Paso Saddlery Tom Threeperson's when I take it out to the desert.

.

Bought my first M28 (6") about 35 years ago. Went to shoot it and it had a hiccup if you shot DA. I called S&W getting the run around for a few hours and finally demanded to talk to who was in charge. Finally, spoke with some guy named Roy Jinks, who was like the top CS guy back then. I was polite but gave him an earful. He told me to send it back addressed to him and he would take care of it.

Boy! did he keep his word! It came back so perfect. Smoothest DA trigger and the finest SA I've ever felt. It was always accurate, and a pleasure to shoot. I taught my kids how to shoot "big guns" with it.

But one day I saw this really nice SIG P220 at a Pawn Shop and well...guess what...?
.
.
.
Think I'm stupid??? ... I still got my M28 with its original box plus a 4" M28 I found last year AND a P220...or two. I'd buy another M28 if they weren't so stupidly high when you see them. Saw one 2-months ago for $850.

I like my SIG's but the M28 is one of those that they'll have to "pry..."

In the old days (1980's) when I first started selling guns, the "house smith", who had worked at S&W for decades, would cut the front sight and install a colored polymer insert on the front sight on older Smiths that didn't have a pinned front.

Carried a 4" M-19 for three years in NJ until we went with M-59 nines.

In 1985 when I joined the MT Hwy Patrol I was issued one of the last, new in box 4" M-28's for my duty gun. Carried it until the early 90's when we finally went to autos.

Neat deal though...we were allowed to buy our duty weapon, with leather , speedloaders, etc for all of $140. Needless to say I bought mine.

This thread has compelled me to haul out my Model 66. It's a K frame, of course, not an N, and it's stainless, not blued, but I think it's fairly relevant. While I'm not really a revolver a guy, I like the K frame as a concealed carry candidate. My dad was a revolver guy, and this 1976 Mod. 66 belonged to him, until he passed away last year. Thought I'd share a couple of hasty pics I just took on my back porch. These posts with the customized revolvers are somewhat timely for me, as I've been mulling the idea of giving this Mod. 66 a mild makeover.

Very nice score Templar.....that is one damn fine weapon you got there. There are some very nice wheel guns in this thread.;)

Sad to say, I've never owned a revolver since high cap pistols came on the scene in the early 80's. My college room mate had quite a nice collection of wheel guns that I got a chance to shoot and of course the old Army issue .38s for aviators, before the change over to the M9. I'll have to add one to the collection for nostalgia, as well as a Colt 1911 gold cup if I can find one at a good price.

I was issued a 28 as a rookie in the 80's. There was a mass exodus from revolvers to autos at the time. I couldn't wait to get rid of the damn thing back then. I saw one not too long ago and actually had a soft spot for it in my heart.

I kept most of my old Smith revolvers, though I rarely shoot any of them but the 22 lr's. I still carry my 44 mountain gun when I'm out in the boonies though.

I absolutely love old S&W wheel guns (and Colts too for that matter).

I'm sad that I missed the era of the revolver in police work for a multitude of reaons not just related to guns.

I would have loved to carry my 3.5" pre-Model 27 even with the extra weight.

There is just something about blued steel and wood S&W's that touches the soul.
