Atomic blast goggles

So, I inherited my father in law's atomic blast goggles from his time in the US Navy. Operation crossroads (Bikini Atoll). The goggles never experienced a nuclear blast nor radiation as he rotated out to Pearl before returning to civillian life.

My wife wants to use her Dad's Atomic blast goggles to watch the solar eclipse. I can't find any mention of this being appropriate nor flatly incorrect eye protection for the natural sun vs the man made sun.

Good idea or bad idea? The goggles are super cool and retro.

Giving the minimum protection the Navy actually provided to people during those early nuclear tests, I'd say it's a bad idea.

Relatively inexpensive eyewear is available designed specifically for what your wife is wanting to do.

While I don’t have any firsthand knowledge on her father’s goggles, I’d advise my wife to pass rather than seek approval from someone on the Net. Hey babe, Joe on the Internet said you’d be fine… no thanks.

She misses her dad. He died just before the covid social experiment occurred. I will advise her, despite looking old school cool, the actual solar eclipse glasses will be the issued ppe for next week.

Don't use them even for stated purpose unless they're Polarized Lead-Zirconium-Titanate (PLZT) like issued to SAC aircrews.

If you have or have access to a welding hood you can adjust it to a shade 13, and compare the light through the lenses using a flashlight or household light bulb. You should barely be able to see any light coming through. I understand why she would want to use them. I make no guarantees, but I do know shade 13 is considered safe to use.
