With the recent trend in gilding metal and corebonded bullets, it seems that a bullet staying together (keeping it's mass) is the most important factor? This seems to be the exact opposite of velocity and fragmentation as applied to say a 5.56MM 55 GR. FMJ.

Which do I want overall?

Which do I want for in home protection?

Also you have FMJ, Hollow Point, Soft Point, Ballistic Tip, Frangile and Match Ammo. What is the specific use of each of these.

Please help me understand. Thank you.

Zippy,

This is a pretty non specific question, that would require a massive amount of text to basically say, "it depends and it's up to you to decide."

You will be better off if you get a bunch of lower cost FMJ bullets and work on improving your shooting skills.

It's kinda like yeah, maybe & who knows ;) but heres some links that may explain some of it for you ... I hope nobody minds a link to another site
My own SHTF stash is PRVI 556 'M193' & PRVI 223 75 gr match hp
People have had both these rounds frag,no testing myself so I can't testify

But if you have deep pockets Hornady 75 gr TAP/LE is 'da sh_t' they say

Hope this helps a little

Shot placement is far, FAR more important than anything else.

No "magic bullet" will make up for a poorly-placed shot.

Things like fragmentation should be considered a bonus.

Beyond that, Hornady TAP seems to get some pretty good reviews. It's WAY too expensive for range ammo, but a mag or two for home defense wouldn't be a bad idea.

But I wouldn't feel bad about a mag load of XM193 FMJ's either.

One well-placed round of XM193 works better than five poorly-placed rounds of TAP.
