View Full Version : Pueblo West COLORADO monthly rifle match

For those who don't know there is a rifle match at the Pueblo West Sportsman's Association on the 4th Sunday of every month. Match fee is only $15. We generally shoot 3 to 4 different stages.

Odd months (Jan, Mar, May, etc) are semi-auto, even months (Feb, Apr, June) are bolt gun / precision rifle / hunting rifle. On the bolt gun months (even months), you can still shoot with a semi auto (ie. AR15, AK47, AR10, M1A, M1 Garand, Mini-14, etc...but instead of being classed seperately, they put all the semi auto shooters in one class, all the precision rifle guys in one class, and all the hunting rifle guys in one class).

On the semi auto shoots, if you shoot irons, you are only classed against other iron shooters, if you shoot one optic you are only classed (ranked) against other shooters with one optic, etc.

Some pics of yesterday's monthly rifle match at Pueblo West. Distances from 15 yards to 425 yards. 3 different stages. Targets were for the most part steel with some clay pigons, cardboard IPSC, and balloons added in. A good time was had by all (over 400 pics)

Zak posted this info on another board for any guys in the Colorado area that want to get involved in competition:

The Pueblo match is one of the hardest carbine matches in the country, as far as I can tell. People who shoot this match regularly always place in the top 10% at any national-level 3Gun match on the medium to long-range carbine stages.

Right now is a great time for 3-gun, multi-gun, and practical shooting in Colorado. We have currently have:

* 3-Gun at Weld Co (E. of Ft Collins) monthly
* 3-Gun at Clear Creek (Dumont) quarterly
* Practical rifle at Pueblo monthly
* Multi-gun at Camp Guernsey ARNG base (WY) every other month
* Long-range "sporting" rifle at Raton (NM) monthly Jan-Sept.
* IPSC/IDPA almost every weekend with 1.5 hrs of Denver.

Other competition info can be found here:

Monthly matches at Pueblo West (30 minutes from Colorado Springs)

-2nd Sunday IPSC Pistol

-3rd Sunday IDPA Pistol (with a monthly side match, rotates from back up gun, to shotgun, to carbine / rifle)

Pueblo West rifle match this SUNDAY 02-25-07........You can shoot with either a bolt gun or a semi auto at this match.......a lot of run and gun in the sun

Talking about guns on the internet is NOT going to improve your gun handling / shooting skills......Guys will spend $1,000 on an optic, but won't spend $15 to come out and put themselves and their gear to the test.........Yes, I'm calling some of you out :D

Gents,

Just a heads up, there is a rifle match at the Pueblo West Sportsman Associatoin range this Sunday (02-25-07). Shooter's meeting is at 9:45am. Match fee is $15. Combo to the blue lock is #2506 (in case you are not a member of PWSA).

You can shoot either a BOLT ACTION (sniper or hunting type bolt action rifle) or SEMI-AUTO (AR15, AK47, M1A, FN-FAL, etc) rifle at this months match. There will be 3, possibly 4 stages. Lot's of steel targets.

Don't be intimidated by the competition, it's a great time, you are not competing against anyone but yourself. It's an awesome venue to sharpen up old skills and learn new skills, not to mention you will have a lot of fun.

The pics above were taken by Zak Smith at the November match (notice that some guys are shooting iron sights or non-magnified optics.....you don't have to have a bunch of expensive gear to shoot, just bring whatever you have....we see AR15, FN-FAL, M1A, M1 Garand, AR10, Mini-14, AK-47 variants, and several other platforms at these matches)

**Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with the guys that put these matches on and don't make a dime off any of these matches. I post this info in an attempt to get guys involved in the shooting sports. Not to mention you'll have a good time, meet like minded people, and learn new things about you (as a shooter) and about your rifle**

Skill Level, Physical Ability, Expensive Gear IS NOT a factor in these matches, you can go as fast or as slow as you want.

Hope to see some of you there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Match tomarrow (04-22-07). Bolt gun or Semi-Auto

Match announcement I received via email:

The Rifle Match for Sunday, 4/22/07 is a GO
(Bolt Action Format / Semi-Auto's welcome)

The match for Sunday is Bolt Action format (as always semi-autos are welcome but all semi-autos are placed into one class). Setup begins at 0645 hrs. Try to get out before the match to help setup (set up is not mandatory, but help to set up the stages, set up steel, etc. is always welcome).

Walk-thru at 0930 hrs. Use the BLUE lock (2506) and lock it back in a series with the other locks to allow access to the range by other users.

On Bolt Action days remember we try to have the targets a little farther out on the Long Range and Mid-Range stages. The Standards are still using the new format with the dedicated Flash Targets at 200 yards. Depending on your ability, the wind, and luck you'll need 100 to 125 rounds (semi-auto round count is usually higher, 200 - 300 rounds is optimal).

We are going try burying some conduit in the ground to shield the cables running from the sensors to the strobes on the Long Range stage in an attempt to prevent target malfunctions.

Rifle Match this Sunday, 5/27/07

(Semi-Auto Gun Format (AR15, AR10, Mini-14, M1 Garand, M1A, FAL, etc.)

I am sorry for the late notice; Xxxxxx and I were out of town until Friday evening.

Rifle match this Sunday. Semi-Auto format. Ranges from 200 to 425 yards. Expect to shoot about 100+ rounds depending on your skill and Pueblo West wind. Use the Blue Lock (combo: 2506); be sure to relock in a series so other users of the Range have access. $15.00 Entry Fee. Set-up about 0645hrs; we need extra help on set-up this month. Walk-thru at 0930.

**Side Note: We just returned from training at a Federal Facility which included work with AR-15s. The longest shot we took was 100 yards at targets about 1.5 times the size of our Flash Targets. I'd like to think shooting our matches puts our participants way ahead of that "curve."

Gents,

Check out Zak Smith's article in "Book of the AR-15 (magazine by Guns & Ammo....on sale at news stands now) titled "Armalite's Infantry Rifle" (pg 128 - 135).

In this article Zak talks about the rifle match in this thread:

[from Zak's article] (posted with permission from Zak Smith):

"I am lucky to live in a part of the country with a dedicatedcommunity of practical shooters: USPSA/IPSC, three-gun, and action rifle. In paticular, the monthly Pueblo (West) Rifle Match is run by an experienced law enforcement officer who believes that rifles should be used to their full capability. In other words, it's a har match, with targets from contact distance to 425 yards.

The most common rifle set up for this match is a 16- to 18-inch AR, with a low-power optic such as the Trijicon ACOG, Aimpoint, or Schmidt & Bender Short Dot.

These optics aid target location, acquisition and sight picture, especially for small targets, distant targets and targets that have very low contrast with the background. I was curious to find out how this stock A2 rifle would fare and how much more difficulty I would have with the iron sights compared to a modern optic.................." [/from Zak's article]

In short if you're a local shooter, get the article / magazine, you'll recognize some local shooters in Zak's pics. And if you're local come out on the 4th Sunday of every month and shoot.

The match is a lot of fun. You learn a lot about yourself, your gun, and your gear (optic, etc).

The atmosphere is non-intimidating (the only person that will judge your abilities as a shooter is you). A lot of people think you have to be a world class shooter to shoot in competition. You don't. Competition is only going to make you shooter / rifleman, and the only person you should be competing with is yourself.

Hope to see some of you guys on the 4th Sunday of this month!!!

PPPS Rifle Match is a GO for Sunday, 7/22/07

-Walk-thru at 09:45 am

-Cost is $15.00

-Combination to the BLUE lock is 2506. Be sure to always lock the locks back through each other to make a series. This is important because other clubs may have events in-progress as well.

Awesome match yesterday. I saw a lot of new faces.

Talked with a couple shooters who had never shot the match and they really enjoyed themselves and took a lot of lessons away from the match.

This match is probably the best bang for fun and lessons you will learn about yourself as a shooter and the gun / optics / accessories you are using.

Match announcement for the PPPS Rifle Match for Sunday, October 28th, 2008

This will be the annual AK vs. AR match.

Match Announcement / Match Info:

**********************************************************************

For the past three years or so we've hosted an AR vs. AK style match. The original intent was a heads-up comparison between the two systems in back-to-back runs on the same course of fire.

Last year, I mindlessly retained our usual Long Range stage and Standard Exercise stage which was incredibly frustrating-miserable in fact-for those of us shooting AKs. I was painfully reminded of the AK's "nature."

This year I'd like to make the event more about using the rifles/carbines at distances suitable to iron sights / dot scopes, instead of some kind of head to head comparison of ARs vs. AKs. So if you have a blaster setup for work on the close side of 250 yards, then here is the plan for this year:

-Three classes:

-AK Style Rifles (Iron Sighted AK-47, AK-74, SKS, etc, no bipods, no drum style magazines)

-AR Style Rifles (Iron Sighted AR-15 type, no bipods, no drum style magazines)

-Optics (Semi-Auto style rifles with one optic, no bipods, no drum style magazines)

-Three Courses of Fire @ about 35 rounds per stage:

-Long Range (Full size Pepper Poppers @ no more than 250 yards; flash targets ranging from 125 yards to 200 yards; all this from the first firing point, the shooter will advance forward toward the targets.)

-Mid-Range (Flash targets ranging from 90 yards to 150 yards; the shooter will move toward the sides of the range)

-Close Range (Several Paper Targets not to exceed 50 yards from the first firing position, all hits scored minor)

Pikes Peak Practical Sshooters (PPPS) Rifle hopes to see you for the October Match wherein we are going to make it "easy" to get hits.

-Eddie Xxxxxx

Got this match announcement via email:

The Rifle Match for Sunday, 10/28/07, is a GO!

Remember we are changing the format for this month, only:

Three classes:

-AK Style Rifles (Iron Sighted AK-47, AK-74, SKS, etc. no bipods, no drum mags)

-AR Style Rifles (Iron Sighted AR-15 type, no bipods, no drum mags)

-Optics (Semi-Auto style rifles with one optic, no bipods, no drum magazines)

The targets will be moved much closer. No Standards, instead a close range drill on paper targets. The longest shot will be on Pepper Poppers at 250 yards. Round count will be about 35 rounds in each course, for three courses of fire.

The main focus is to make the event "friendly" to iron sights and dot scopes. We've had a couple of folks want to shoot two rifles of different classifications as a sort of comparison. We aren't really set up for that because of the high round count and a paper stage. However, if you have some pressing need to do this let me know and we will try to accommodate you.

As always:

-Cost is $15.00 (cash is best for us),

-set-up begins at 0645 (match begings at 0945),

-use the Blue lock (combo 2506) and set it in a series with the other locks to allow the different users of the range access.

The weather looks to be sunny and mild.

Lessons re-learned:

* AKs are not necessarily more reliable than AR's
* AK sights suck
* It's way easier to make hits with a stock AR-15A2 than an AK.
* Reloads on an AK suck
* At anything beyond "across the room distances", the AK is less than 25% as capable as a modern AR (comparing shooter times and stage difficulty)

Got this match announcement via email for this Sunday's match:

The Rifle Match for Sunday is a GO!
(Semi-Auto Format)

We are going to run a Semi-Auto format rifle match this Sunday (11-25-07). It will be back to the standard way which means much longer ranges and Standard Exercises. Clean off your rifle scope, sensitize your trigger finger, and practice your breathing.

**********************************************************************
Beginning in March of 2008 we are going to replace the Bolt Action matches with shotgun only matches. We've yet to finalize the rules and get PWSA approval, however, we have the support of Lizard and the folks running the PPPS pistol matches. Lizard has offered the use of his metal falling plates which was a prerequisite for the shotgun matches to go forward.

In broad strokes, the Shotgun matches will have three classes: Open, Tactical, and Pump. We intend on about three stages: Buckshot and slug only fired on paper targets; two stages fired with birdshot featuring falling metal, one of these stages will have at least two 50 yard slug shots. We may incorporate some shots on the Gibson pigeon flippers, however, Rhodes is resistant to using these targets in this format. You can expect to shoot about 25 rounds of OO buck, about 10 slugs, and about 40 rounds of birdshot. It will be ruff and ready shooting and oriented toward the Gunsite/SOF style, social shotgun concept. The written format will be distributed about the middle of December to the folks on this mailing list.

**********************************************************************

This Sunday (11-25-07): Setup begins about 0645. Use the blue lock, 2506, be sure to lock the locks in a series to allow other users of the range access; walk thru at 0945; cost is $15.00 per match for everyone, Pikes Peak Practical Shooters (PPPS) does not have a club which collects annual dues , cash is best; be sure to note whether you are a PWSA member on the entry card, we pay a fee to PWSA for non-members of the host club and we need an accurate count; expect to shoot at least 100 rounds; weather is expected to be about 50 degrees and sunny.

This will be the last match until we start up the Shotgun Match in March of 2008, then we will alternate between the Semi-Auto Rifle Matches and the Shotgun Matches.

You better come out and get your holiday fix before winter comes and we are all stuck in the house regretting not making that last trip to the range.

Check out Zak Smith's outstanding article "Fighting Optics for the AR15" in the Feb 4th edition of the Shotgun News (on news stands now) and you will see several pictures from this match and local shooters may also recognize several members from this board shooting in the match.

Come out and shoot, maybe Zak will make you famous [;)]

Matches start up again in March.

RIFLE Match in MARCH (not shotgun........no match in Feb)

Got this via email:

We will have a RIFLE Match on the 4th Sunday in MARCH.

Sorry no match this month. Xxxxxx and Xxxxxx are using that weekend to repair some of the things we all shot up last year, build a couple of new barricades, and confab on the strategy for 2008.

As soon as possible we'll get out the new rules/format. Remember we will shoot Rifle on the odd numbered months and Shotgun Only on the even numbered months.

Xxxxxx

Hope to see some of you guys next month!!!!

RIFLE MATCH THIS SUNDAY

The fourth Sunday this month falls on Easter. That is unfortunate but we will have a Rifle Only match as scheduled. The weather is projected to be mild and sunny.

As always set-up begins around 0645; walk-thru at 0945, use the blue lock (combo: 2506) and relock it back in a series so other users of the range have access;

cost is $15.00 dollars;

you can expect to shoot about 100 rounds if you are very good, bring more if you expect a miss or two it, it easy to carry extra rounds back home, it is hard to make them appear when you are prone in the middle of a stage.

Got the following match announcement via email:

**********************************************************************

Sunday (04-27-08) we will take our first run at our Shotgun Only match.

Set-up begins at 0645; combination to the blue lock is 2506 -be sure to lock back in a series so other users of the range have access via "their" locks;

-cost is $20.00;

-weather is predicted to be Sunny, 68, breezy;

-round count: no more than 25 OO or OOO buckshot, no more than 10 slugs; about 60 rounds of birdshot.

Notes:

-When we speak of "buckshot" we mean a specific loading of a certain size of shot. For our event you may only shoot the Buckshot Stage with either 8 or 9 pellet OO or OOO buckshot. We will shoot this stage on paper targets so a loading of no other size or number of projectiles is acceptable.

"Birdshot" means lead shot in sizes running from #8 to about #4 is appropriate. Use your judgment as to the velocity and weight of the loading. You'll be shooting metal knock down targets, so you don't need anything fancy, but you need enough power or choke to knock over an 8" pistol plate or Pepper Popper.

-We will not allow you to stage your ammo, that is you cannot begin a stage with your magazine loaded with a mix of buckshot/birdshot and slugs. You need to select load for the challenge when you arrive at the segment of the stage needing the special loading. Additionally, we will not allow you stage your ammo on your carriers; don't mix your slugs and birdshot/buckshot together in the same carrier. For safety reasons, the R.O. must be able to see that a particular round comes from an exclusive source.

-We will have a couple of 75 yard slug shots on metal ABC zone metal targets.

BAD NEWS FOLLOWS - GOT THIS VIA EMAIL:

After the match on Sunday, October 26, 2008 we will NO LONGER be holding long gun matches at Pueblo West Sportsmans Association.

The burden of putting on the events has gotten to be a little too much for the match directors. For those of you who don't know, Hoser got that whole ball rolling several years back.

When Hoser had to deploy we filled in. It was my hope Hoser would be able to get back in the driver's seat, but he advised me that wasn't possible at this time.

The equipment used in the matches is the property of the Pikes Peak Practical Shooters and that is where it will be returned, so if someone is ambitious they might consider...

Match Announcement

This Sunday, October 26, 2008 we will have one more match. In an effort to make things simple for setup and teardown, we will have a RIFLE Match.

This Sunday's rifle match will be in the same format with a little higher round count on the Long Range and Mid-Range stages. The weather looks good for Pueblo West, a perfect day for Worship.

Rifle Match for Sunday:

-cost for everyone will be $3.00 (surcharge to pay the Pueblo West Sportsman's Association);

-an average shooter should be able to get by with 140 rounds (40est+40est+30);

set-up about 6:45am;

walk through about 9:30am;

use the BLUE lock (combo - 2506) and PLEASE lock this lock back into a series with the other locks on the chain so the participants in the other events can come and go.

Good news......the show will go on......got the following info via email:

*****************************************************************

Here is what is planned for the 2009 Pueblo Rifle Matches. Some changes, lots of the same.

I am the Match Director (again) and Justin Oxxx is the Assistant Match Director. Mike, Chuck, and George have all stepped up to help us out and make the matches happen. Without these four guys, Oct 2008 would have been the last Pueblo West Rifle Match. The IPSC club is still the main club and we are just using *their* stuff. Like my match staff, without Lizard, it could not and would not happen. Please be sure to say thanks.

In a nutshell the three stage format of Long Range, Medium Range and Standards will stay. Open, Tactical and He-Man are the divisions.

Time plus scoring will be used. When it comes to paper targets, Deltas do not count. Look for a little more paper now and again, but it will all be close up stuff. No paper past 35-50 yards. Again, D hits on paper don’t count and are misses. Two hits anywhere else is good.

Round counts will be no more than 30-ish per stage. Total minimum round count should not exceed 100. The shooting will still be hard, so bring extra ammo.

Standards will still be 70 seconds, fixed time, on MGM Flash Targets. 5 shots prone at 200 yards. 5 shots other than prone (kneel, sit, squat) at 175 yards. 5 shots standing at 150 yards. The fourth string will be all three positions with mandatory reloads between each, just like now. However slings, bi-pods, mono-podding, ect are allowed in sitting and prone. Standing is still done the old fashioned way.

The long range and medium range stage will have more shooting positions but fewer targets downrange. This will hopefully make things easier on the spotters, RO and the shooter. The LaRue target will be at most matches as will the pepper poppers with flash-bulbs.

The Sept match will be the annual AK vs. AR match.

Every once in a while there may be a bolt gun side match.

There will be no shotgun matches at all. It just takes more help and time than we have to put on a quality shotgun match.

Justin and I are open to suggestions. After all, it is your match. You pay the match fee. We just set it up.

Updates, news and stuff like it can be found at: http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=114

Lastly, thanks to Eddie, Vicki, Jeff and Tom for keeping it going these past years.

See you there.

Match this coming Sunday.

Just received this via email:

Just like always, the 4th Sunday means rifle shooting in Pueblo.

Plan on no less than 3 stages and 100 rounds. The 425 yard berm will be set up with flashers, MGM Flash Targets, and the Dreaded LaRue. The 300 yard berm will have some up close paper and MGM Flash targets out to 300. And the 200 yard standards will be there as well.

As far as match staff it is down to Justin and I. Chris and Craig should be there to help with set-up, but any way you look at it we are a skeleton crew. Please come out and help. Without help, the matches will go away. Just ask the IDPA shooters that thought I was joking about pulling the plug on matches...

Just got this via email (match this coming Sunday):

This Sunday there will be yet another rifle match in Pueblo. We will be sticking with the 3 stage format of one long range (400 yards) stage, one medium range (300 yards) stage and of course the dreaded standards.

In addition to all that Justin has talked me into a rimfire side match. We might as well put all that Sportsmans Team Challenge steel to use... Plan on 2-6 inch plates out to 125 yards and maybe some bonus 1 inch plates at 50 or so yards. There will be 3 divisions. Tactical using 10 round mags. Open using 10 round plus mags and Manual Operated using whatever capacity mags/tubes you want. Optics allowed in any division. No 22 mags or 17 anything. Just good old fashioned 22 long rifle. No hyper velocity ammo like Stingers/Yellow Jackets/Velicitors ect. High velocity ammo is fine. So dust off that 10/22 or AR-15 conversion and come play.

Dont forget Sept is the annual AK vs AR match.

Good luck to everyone that is headed to DPMS.

We are going to be short on set-up help *again* this month, so please try to come out early. Hope to see you guys Sunday.

We drove down from Denver and arrived at 9:20 and was told by the locals at the club that the match was canceled at 9:05 (for weather)

I didn't notice any bad weather:confused:

We need to car pool...

I was there at about 9 and they had called it off. There is a post on co-ar15.com that it was called off at 7:50. I think I talked to Jeff(non-usmc03)/Hoser(?) - he had a Larue hat on- and he said that PWSA would not let them shoot to do fears of damaging the berms. He also said the base told him that it would continue to rain all day.

I guess when you only get about 10-14 inches of rain a year, you would call that rain. In Ohio, we would call that misting. I guess we could have shot all steel and promised not to miss ;)

Oh well, not my sandbox. I'm going to be a lot more discriminating on weather next year. Four hours of driving and a lot of grief from my wife with no powder burned. That was pretty wicked sleet on Monument Hill.

The dinner at Exit 110 had a nice special on a omlette.

It usually takes me about 2:20 to get from Fort Collins to the Pueblo West range. Once it took me five hours to get home after a match due to weather and traffic.

Email notification that the match was canceled went out at 7:38am this morning.

If a match is going to be canceled due to weather, they usually have an email out between 6:30am - 7:45am

"Hoser" is Tom ...... he is one of the match directors for the match. His email is at the top of this page.

Due to Tom travelling, we new guys who signed up this week weren't added to the email list yet. I am now fully informed on the US Top 40 songs as presented by Ryan Seacrest.

Sorry guys. Totally my fault. Uncle Sam had me out of town until late Saturday night.

I got to the range around 6:30. When the rest of my match staff showed up we all walked the berms and tried to figure out how to put on a decent match.

The reason for the weather cancel was *not* the light mist we had Sunday morning, it was the rain the range got Saturday and early Sunday morning. The berms were pretty muddy and soaked and driving around them would only have torn them up and made a bunch of ruts. Tearing up the place does not sit well with the range management. In fact when I told the range maint guy Sunday morning that we were a cancel he said he appreciated that. Also running around on slippery berms isnt the smartest thing. I have already replaced one ACL due to match stupidity.

I waited at the gate to inform everyone in person about the bad news. We finally left around 9:15 and headed home.

The rifle matches will resume in March but the sniper matches are run year round. Bring out your DMR or bolt gun and have some fun.

To get on the email list, please send me an email to pueblorifle at juno dot com Please include your real name.

I am also planning on setting up a 22 side match as long as the weather is nice.

Maybe see some of you there.

Thanks for all the work Hozer!

... my "sniper rifle:rolleyes:" is down right now, but will probably come out and watch y'all and drool over all your glass:p

I have a new piece of glass coming this week, but I don't think the T1:eek: will make me competitive;)

20 People yesterday and several new faces.

Kolar continues his winning streak shooting 35 out of 40 and Aos maintains a firm hold on 2nd place. I shot like a girl for the first 10 shots but still squeaked out a 30/40.

6 people stayed after to shoot 22s. The wind was rough on those little slow bullets. 4-10 inches of wind at 120 yards.

The Yetti and Mr Butterpants are still MIA. Rumor has it that Mrs Butterpants made Mr sell all his guns to pay for diapers.

We missed you.

There was a couple S&B 5-25s there, several Nightforce scopes but mostly Leupold.

Using a T1 would not be fun. The closest target would just about be covered by the dot.

When we finished up we shot my 338 Lapua for a bit. It is nice to be able to shoot a 338 and not have to wear earplugs...

FOOD POISONING:eek: Its not nice.

The glass on my bolt gun has given up the ghost and until I can get some new long glass, I'm just a 3Gun guy;)

No doubt. I am getting tired of all these weather cancels. All I want to do is go shoot. And its not just us, its all over the state.

...And of course the nasty emails that follow dont help.

I just spoke with Lizard and the match is a go.

Pueblo didnt get any rain or snow today and the wind howled. It should be plenty dry.

Set-up starts around 7:00 and the shooting starts at 10:00.

And the weather was awesome. It was around 30' when I got there and it was around 70' when we finished up around 1:30.

The results just went out, let me know if you didnt get them.

jaydoc1, Don't mess up.

For the record, I am not the dork. Well not the one he's referring to anyway. :p

And you trying to rattle me by telling me not to mess up just strengthened my resolve and made me a better shooter, UVvis. In my mind anyway. :D
