I'm thinking of switching out my standard FSB with either a PRI or YHM front sight. Are there any other options aside from these two? I see that PRI has a set screw design and clamp screw design. Please forgive my ignorance but is there an advantage of one over the other. Between the PRI, YHM or other suggestions, which is the best? I see that the PRI is about $180. Is it that much better than the YHM? Thank you.

Why?

What kind of Rifle/carbine ? The only type weapon I would want a folding front sight is for a full-size Precision rig with magnified optics.
Other wise the KISS principle for red dot optics is stick with the FSB.

LMT 16". There's no reason in particular other than I don't care for looking at the FSB when looking through my Aimpoint. I understand what your saying about the KISS principle...but according to who your talking, I've already surpassed the a KISS rifle concept.

My friend recently got a left-handed Stag rifle and had the shop put the YHM front flip up on it for him. Overall impression I've gotten from it is that it's a decent unit, the sight itself is sturdy and easy to operate, but in helping him get it sighted in we did have an issue with it being canted. It was straight when he first got it but when we began sighting it in it was noticably canted to the left. I help him straighten it -- make sure the 4 set-screws are loctited and that you take care to tighten them evenly and re-check alignment afterward. Putting it back into his case, there was a strap that ran could be run across the FSB and I think that's what yanked the gas block sideways.

I have no experience with the PRI unit. But subjectively I like the design of its clamping system better -- if anything, there are only two screws (YHM has 4) and since it's a split ring, there's no bottom piece to lose if the screws did work out, and tightening shouldn't affect alignment as easily.

also the PRI design allows for easier cant-correction if a mishap ever does occur.

GG&G has two models to choose from. The first is a user-installable unit that clamps on via set-screws. I have no experience with this unit but will give GG&G the benefit of the doubt in that it is comparabel to the PRI & YHM.

The older model is a flow blown gas-block that needs to been installed by a gunsmith. This is the model I have and it has been great. I went to optics early and abhorred having a fixed front sight taking up my view. This unit is so sturdy that LW said it was the only model they recommended for use in conjunction with their piston conversion.

Don't forget the Troy fronts.

I also prefer a flipup front in some cases, and have a set of Troys (front and rear) on my #1 carbine. Their front mounts to the free-float-rail though and not the gas block.

ETA:
The GG&G is a very good option, and I had the same one pictured above installed by them something like 7+ years ago. It was a great sight and it used the stock FSB pins which I like better than set screws.

Try shooting at a moving target. Even with both eyes open that front sight is distracting as hell....get rid of it.

I went with GG&G front and rear. And I have never lost zero on them yet. Been about 6 months. I think the front was around $110 at the gunshow.
