Address Gun Violence in Cities: Obama and Biden would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent.

Well, that sure didn't take long.

Hey, I reckon they'll let you keep your Beretta O/U. Locked up in a big safe at an approved gun club. Maybe.

This is the same exact language that was on his campaign site, which then went to change.gov and is now at the White House site.

While it's certainly not a good thing that it's up there, neither is this some kind of new direction or an indication that he's going to make it a priority.

Awesome, level-headed logic. :) After my own heart. :D I have a feeling that economy is going to be a priority. ;)

We'll See.

Gust Avrakotos: There's a little boy and on his 14th birthday he gets a horse... and everybody in the village says, "how wonderful. the boy got a horse" And the Zen master says, "we'll see." Two years later The boy falls off the horse, breaks his leg, and everyone in the village says, "how terrible." And the Zen master says, "We'll see." Then, a war breaks out and all the young men have to go off and fight... except the boy can't cause his legs all messed up. and everybody in the village says, "How wonderful."
Charlie Wilson: Now the Zen master says, "We'll see."

I am reasonably comfortable discounting much of what politicians say as part of their campaign. However, this is on our governments official White House web site. We'll see.

And-- the AWB is dead last , last in the sub-section and last on the entire list.
The phrase , "They also support" , sounds like politician for " Somebody else can beat their heads against that brick wall".

My only fear is that he will have some sort of AWB thrown together as a bone to throw for some of his further left supporters. This would put it firmly back into the courts for who knows how long.

There is not as much support for more gun control as some think.

BUT - there IS a real danger that more gun control will be put in as an amendment on something very important that a lot of legislators who are "on the fence" or don't care about assault weapons feel they HAVE to vote for.

I think that is how we'll end up with more gun control.

Amendments unrelated to the main bill shouldn't be allowed. It undermines the democratic process.

It is important to note that gun control will not get Obama re-elected in '12. There are VERY FEW "one issue" anti-gun voters and many more "one issue" pro-gun voters. "Fixing" the ecomony (or creating the illusion thereof) WILL get Obama re-elected in '12.

I expect the economy and the spread of Socialist Paradise to be the focus of the next 4 - but they will have to throw the antis a few bones, and unfortunately those bones will probably pass with slim majorities.

We WILL have a new AWB at some point, probably as an amendment to something legit.
