Anyone else in love with the Magpul ACS after playing around with it at SHOT (or whenever you first saw it)?

Yes...very much so. I'm much more interested in the ACS than the MBUS or other new goodies (though the sling plate/sling is pretty slick).

Now THAT is a travel kit! :D

I'm seriously considering getting one, as soon as my dealer gets in one for me to actually hold it.

I simply cannot afford an UBR, much as I would like to have one. The ACS looks like it would be perfect for me, at a good price point.

I'm also getting a set of their handguards and maybe the sling plate...and I'll get a rear MBUS sometime if I can scrape enough money for a nice Aimpoint...

The ACS is much easier to make, think more along the lines of the CTR from what I can tell. I think they will be shipping in much larger amounts.

Does it pull facial hair?

-B

Razorhunter
01-27-09, 00:48
Yup, that's the FIRST thing I thought about when I just saw that stock. "Does it pull facial hair, when you put your cheek on that seam, which runs along the entire length of the stock???"
I sure hope not, but I've never found a stock with seams like that, which did not pull facial hair. Only time will tell I guess. I will cross my fingers.

I swear, that stock looks exactly like a mixture between an LMT SOPMOD, VLTOR Emod, CTR, AND UBR, ALL in one! It looks freaking GREAT, although I would have done without the seam, as LMT did with the SOPMOD.
Oh well, does anyone know if the VLTOR stocks pull hair along their zig-zag-like seam over the battery compartments???

Who can tell me what Micro Aimpoint mount that is? Is that an ADM? Why does it say "SOCOM"? Anything to do with the height at which it mounts the optic? Does that mount in Sticks pic cowitness with a regular F marked FSB, or does it only cowitness with the BUIS?? As much as I like Larue, I just think the Larue micro Aimopoint mount for lower 1/3 cowitness looks kind of odd, with just a smooth, plain-jane solid look to it. That mount up above looks much better, with the simple little differences it has.
Thanks.

wantsum
01-27-09, 01:09
That indeed looks like an ADM micro mount, the "SOCOM" designates a lower 1/3 co-witness

LOKNLOD
01-27-09, 01:11
It didn't pull my beard hair as I lovingly nuzzled the ACS stock at SHOT, but that's just sample size: 1 in pretty non-standard conditions (well -- on this forum, at least. I can think of others where that's it's #1 use  ). If you liked the stock otherwise but had some barber issues with the stock, I bet 5 minutes with a bead of silicone or glue or something smoothed into that crack would solve the problem. Or a strip of tape, even.

I used to hear a lot of complaints about the Vltor's grabbing hairs, but never had one to comment first hand.

Experiencing some mission creep, but here ya go:

Yes it's an ADM. Yes the "SOCOM" moniker refers to the height of the mount. "CO" for absolute cowitness and "SOCOM" for lower 1/3. Yes it would cowitness with either the BUIS or a standard FSB (think about it -- you'd use the same rear BUIS for a front flip or standard FSB, the line of sight is the same height over bore either way). ADM's site (http://www.americandefensemfg.com/) has more details if you'd like.

Razorhunter
01-27-09, 07:33
Yes, you are correct, I wasn't thinking about the height, that late last night. I tend to forget BUIS are all the same height. They are just added weight to me, and I no longer use them on all my rifles.
Thanks for info. Don't think I'll be running silicone or glue down the seams of any of my stocks, but I'm sure some folks would gladly do so!

Anybody have any measurements/weight of the ACS in comparison to standard M4, UBR, SOPMOD, CTR, EMOD, and/or A1 stock?

rob_s
01-27-09, 07:37
FWIW, I've been using Vltor stocks for several years and never had the "seam" pull my beard. What pulls is the junction between the stock and the receiver extension, and that happens with Vltor, Emod, CTR, MOE, and the GI stock, and it has even happened with my AK in the junction between the stock and the receiver.

LSK
01-27-09, 10:20
I have handled the ACS and it did not pull at facial hair. I would like it better if they would have just added the tubes to the CTR profile. I can live with out the club foot and little door. But over all very good level of fit and finish like all of Magpuls gear.

Same here. I use the Spec Ops recon wrap as a neck gaitor. It can be pulled up over your cheeks to cover facial hair while you shoot, and dropped back down around the neck while you're waiting for the next stage or whatever.

I gotta say the ACS is sexy, but damn if it doesn't need a more useable sling webbing slot location.
Not sure how that 1.25" slot on the underside of the stock could be used for?
Wish they had offered a CTR-like sling webbing slot, (parallel to buttpad) which actually lends itself to being used for a sling hookup point.

I doubt we will see any updates until they are shipping, have arrived at dealers, or possibly when they are getting ready to ship.

Just another person waiting patiently for the ACS to come out.

Since the style of it looks like it is going to fall between the CTR and the UBR, I wonder if the price will follow that as well. That could be anywhere from $100 to $200 though. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the lower end of the scale but who am I really kidding, I'll buy it even if it is $200 :o

Razorhunter
05-18-09, 15:01
Yeah, well don't be surprised if it's OVER $200, and actually, the ACS is more along the lines of a CTR and an LMT SOPMOD stock, rather than a UBR.
I too will wait patiently for the ACS, that is, IF I decide that I can live without a much needed VERTICAL sling webbing slot, ala the CTR/etc. (WHY wouldn't they give us one btw?? :( )
However, I just hope this thing doesn't turn out like the UBR, where guys eventually just lost interest.
BTW, do we have a WEIGHT on the ACS stock yet?

LOKNLOD
05-18-09, 15:08

I guess I would expect Brownells to at least sell for the same price as MidwayUSA, since they are their main competition.
It has been mentioned that many sites have them listed at $116-$128, but that might not turn out to be true. Midway sure does, and as for the others, we will see.
$134 for the ACS stock, is still a decent deal, and the Brownells comment really wasn't in regards to the ACS alone, but rather, all other parts. The only item I really purchase from Brownells on a regular basis, are their USGI mags, which are a decent deal for the quality. However, all other items I buy, usually get purchased elsewhere, for the sole reason of Brownells higher prices.
You said it yourself, Brownells always sells at MSRP, and that is why so many people go to Midway/etc first, and use Brownells only as a last resort, when a needed part/item can't be had elsewhere. I'm not usually a cheapskate, but when a company is consistently more expensive than most others, my business must go elsewhere. The only exception is if a dealer is in my home state/local area, where shipping would be the determining factor. Simple economics.

I had no idea BravoCompany had them.
I see them on their site, but when I first checked, they weren't (and still aren't) listed on their "NEW ARRIVALS, JUST IN" page.
I thought ALL new products got listed on that page on BCM's website.
Anyone else notice this? I liked that page so much, since it was easy to see what all was new at BCM, but now it seems I might be missing out on items at BCM, if I solely use the NEW ARRIVALS page as a reference.
I wonder if that was just a fluke, or if it happens with other products as well?

If you qualify for the discount with Brownells, nobody beats their price. If you are Mil/LE, call them and let them know. You may have to fax something to prove it, but the discount is well worth your time and effort.

The only exception is if a dealer is in my home state/local area, where shipping would be the determining factor. Simple economics.

MAP on this is $128.20 (which is amazingly the same price as Midway). Authorized Magpul dealers won't list it for less than that. Those that do are sourcing them from somewhere else.

Just FYI

looks like the ones that came out dont have the QD sling swivel cup. Whats up with that Magpul?

Holy SCHMOKES!
This is most disappointing. Admittedely, I prefer to NOT use a QD swivel, but since they omitted my preferred sling hookup slot, ala parallel to the buttpad (and right up next to the buttpad on the CTR), then I must look into this.
I was planning on running a QD swivel on mine, and I purchased my ACS from Midway the other day, based on the pics Stickman had posted.
Midway didn't have a pic up yet, so I bought it without seeing an updated pic.
This is most disturbing. Maybe this will still work out somehow. Not sure.
Must ask Magpul soon. Hopefully BCM's website pic is just a fluke or something? Doubt it, but hoping...

Release of the ACS kept me from buying a SOPMOD...still collecting parts for my first build! The money I saved bought me a receiver extension, buffer, spring, and associated goodies. :D

I don't know, I would rather not pay an extra $20 for something I won't use. I know that we are all used to seeing the ACS with the QD installed, and that is my fault, but I would rather see the price down lower.

I'm still totally pumped about the ACS, don't get me wrong. It's going to be a winner for sure.
I'm just wondering where you attach your sling Stickman? What are you doing for a sling?
If you are not attaching your sling to the ACS (and are possibly running an ASAP, or other setup where the sling attaches near the castle nut/etc), then let me ask you HOW WOULD you attach your sling to the ACS, IF you were going to do so?
A lot of us have also been wanting to ask you just HOW does the QD swivel port attach/detach from the ACS stock? Does it somehow screw on? Press fit in? Etc?
As always, thanks Stick...

This is how I attach my sling:

So for me I prefer saving the $20 too and will be selling a LMT SOPMOD stock w/the QD point and a QD sling attachment ring as soon as my ACS shows up. Nothing like making money to upgrade.

Not with a sling attached. And for what ever reason you don't have a sling attached, You can high-grip the pistol grip and kinda hold on to the link at the same time. Plus the noise of gunfire tends to drown out any link rattling:D.

That's why I just jumped on it for like $15 more at Rainier because who knows when anyone will get anymore in stock. Could be weeks/months and the extra $15 I spent saves me weeks possibly months then it's money well spent. Plus Rainier uses USPS Priority to ship and I use a vendor that offers that shipment whenever I get the chance because I ship daily and have had far better luck and it's quicker/cheaper plus free Saturday delivery. I sound like I commercial but those are the reasons I ordered from Rainier Arms in case anyone cares. :D

Not that I notice. Little noises like that don't really bother me though when I'm using it so I don't really pay much attention.

Rainier is 2 hours up the road from me, so I use them whenever possible, great retailer. In fact the only thing possibly BAD about them is that they have stuff shipped out so fast, so you better be on your A game because if you need to cancel an order or change it you gotta do so FAST because it's usually out the door 15 minutes later.

As for the ASAP ring, I remember people complaining about the possible noise, and Travis' response was "Wow there must be a lot of secret squirrels on AR15.com"

Yeah, it's already en route and looks like it will most likely arrive the day after tomorrow. Gotta love Priority!

with a Midwest Industries MCTAR-TS2 of course, although that will require drilling into the ACS , and a CQD sling mount on the front rail

There are other costs besides the component cost. Labor to install etc. I don't know how that works out in the spreadsheets of markups, "real" labor costs, etc.

Just sayin'...

besides, real men use receiver end plate receptacles... ;)

I bought an ACS allready so I do like the thing despite this.

But still - every other fancy SOPMOD type slanted cheekweld stock has the QD built in now - heck most have it embedded into the plastic so I don't get why magpul didn't include it in the design 100%. Seems like an odd product design choice. At least the cups will screw in with magpul branded bolts. heh :)

Means if people want their ACS stock they need another rear mount option. Hey, while I'm ordering stuff from Magpul might as well pay another $30 for their ASAP plate, right?

Just a thought.

There are a lot of gullible people on the internet, but I don't think anyone here buys into the idea that something is included for no cost. The QD is included on other stocks, and you are also charged for it. I've got no problem with that, its a judgment call for each company on what they should include, along with how they should package an item.

I understand your point, but there is a flip side. If most customers aren't going to use something, why include it?

There is also an assumption that is the same part Magpul is using. If that were true, it would have been released when the stock was...... wouldn't that make sense? Who knows, maybe I'm wrong.... I've only had an ACS for 9 months and carry it daily. I could still be overlooking things. :D

The sling on my duty weapon is mounted to the Noveske QD endplate that came on my Noveske weapon. On my training and other weapons, I also use the Magpul ASAP with good results. I would have no issues using the ASAP plate for duty use.

I'm a fan of using a receiver endplate for mounting the sling, it allows the stock to be changed longer or shorter without altering the sling length.

If for some reason I couldn't use an endplate, I would use the QD socket, but that would not be my personal choice, nor is it what I recommend when I'm teaching courses. I'm a big believer that you should be able to adapt to designs as needed, and its not like the sling mount is a terrible option. Its simply not what I prefer. However, it is very simple to use, install, and remove. That can make it a great option for guys who have one sling that they share between a handful of different weapons.

The QD socket should install the same way as it does on the UBR. Male and female threads locking the QD mount into position.

If I missed something let me know. :)

That's pretty cool about the dummy rounds.

I also hate how C123's rattle around (for those who asked about the ASAP plate... this is MUCH worse) in the battery tubes on my LMT SOPMOD and this looks about the same so that's what I figured it would be like. I need to cut up some foam pieces to hold everything solid I guess. It hasn't bothered me enough to want to do anything about it yet but it is annoying.

For those with a rattling issue, put foam earplugs in the tubes behind the batteries, and put enough in so that the batteries compress them when you put the caps on. No rattle, no "cutting up foam", and you have spare ear plugs if you ever need them.
