FN SCAR-L, AAC was the original Suppressor supplier to the SCAR program. For a few years, this was one of the only SCAR in existant outside of FN and the military!

interestingly, the FN SCAR with the AAC can is wearing aMagpul MIAD.

From the carbon build up on the receiver, you can tell this SCAR has been thoroughly tested and abused without much care and maintenance. a true testament to the engineering of the FN SCAR team.

The only thing that really did it for me was the Vltor suppressor- and even then there isn't a definite price on it-

Amen.

We will have to wait and see what the TCO (total cost of ownership) on that sucker is going to be before i get my hopes up.

For me it was a great show. Did a little business, met up with a number of my account managers/ reps, international customers, etc, and had the opportunity to sit down with R&D guys at some specific companies to give feed back. Stayed pretty busy with planned meetings and ended up stumbling upon a number of new contacts eager to work on fresh projects.

A lot of the gear I was looking at is heavy on the LE/MIL/Contractor side of things and there seems to be quite a bit of progress as guys rotate home and bring ideas back either with updates or new items.

Some stuff was unique for the sake of being unique but quite a bit is legit tools of the trade.

Here are two versions of the Gas Trap Compak 16. Dr. Joe won his lawsuit on the system and production is slated to get going in the new 10K square foot factory in Phownix. The Compak16 with the supressor is the mate to one that was used by an NCO in SPEC Ops in Iraq and A-Stan, he killed in excess of 30 Haji's with it. He fired at least 20K rounds, many of them M262. This NCO is now assigned to Procurement and he brought his boss who purchased a fair number that will go the next step in field experimentation. Denny Hansen of SWAT owns one of the systems which he wrote about in the April 09 SWAT.
The gas trap is really a cooling chamber that sends 70% of the gunk in the gas out the barrel and only 30% of what would be in a D I system to run the bolt. It does not add a piston which is only adding parts.

The Arms Tech takedown rifle has a patented screw out barrel that returns to zero all of the time. Dr. Joe considers this one of his best inventions. This rifle breaks into three parts, none longer than 16 inches so that it can be carried from a FOB without the B G's realizing who has the rifle. LAPD procurement team spent a long time with this rifle at the show and we got to know them well. Putting it into a laptop case means that a security team can go to a stakeout and never alarm the civilians in the place. The supressor is a quick on off system that Denn Hansen describes in a SWAT article and it will not wear out.
This rifle is now being made in 7.62 and 338 Norma Magnum.

SMGLee, Why does MR 5.56 have a different pistolgrip than HK416? Is the BCG different in MR 5.56???

Razorhunter
01-26-10, 23:27
The only real downside I see to that MR556A1 is that it just looks awful with that TOO short rail and long 16" bbl.
A few questions for anyone in the know:

1. -Does anyone know if there will by chance be a "long rail" version available? Doubt it, but most definitely worth asking. ?

2. -How about a 14.5" version? Again, doubtful, but I'll ask anyway. ?

3. -Is it possible to simply chop the bbl down to 14.5" and be GTG, or would that present any gas port sizing issues?

I've had literally everyone I have ever known in my entire life sending email after email to Hk for almost a year now, asking them, hell, literally begging them to ditch the proprietary receiver pin configuration and just go with a standard pin configuration.
I'm quite honestly amazed that they actually did it. Perhaps they've finally grown tired of releasing sub par versions of all their excellently designed firearms all these years? Who knows. At least they have made the "A1" a reality.

Anyhow, any info would be appreciated, pertaining to my questions above guys.

armakraut

They make an A1 and A2 style version of the same grip.

Look at the buttstocks in the photos, you'll notice both a concave and convex shaped buttpad.

Here's another sincere request for Midlenth URX rails WITHOUT flip up front sights (so as to work with standard Midlength gas systems)

They would be SO easy to produce. Just run a modified CNC program and VOILA! KAC would then have the FF Rail market covered, and ultimately dominated. Actually, seeing how this rail has already been produced in small numbers, the CNC programming would be that much more easy as pie. Please oh please KAC.

Our rifle length rail works with a "Armalite" type midlength gas system, using a LP gas block.

We are NOT doing any rails without flip front sights other than the carbine length rail.

A lot of the spec are still under review, Colt is hoping to be able to use the a F marked FSB, but it is still working it out in the engineering side of the house.

the 6520 by Colt Tactical is looking at a market ETA of later this year.

Every one has an opinion. The Vltor gas block, the Centurion Arms Rail are all prospective.

As far as the rail, it is pretty darn robust compare to any rail on the market.

you can be happily tossing away your M4 stock, M4 handguards and your carry handle and modify your 6920 or get one of this Colt Tactical gun and be ready right out of the box.

You can criticize all you want, but this is a step forward for Colt, other than a few detractors, the overwhelming responses has been positive.

A 4th model could be pushed out along with the models displayed at SHOT. you might get your wish in one or two of your requests.

When Colt really decides it wants a piece of the commercial market, it should listen to the existing market, not invent a new one.

1. -Does anyone know if there will by chance be a "long rail" version available? Doubt it, but most definitely worth asking. ?

Just speculation on my part:

The 416/MR556 is already heavier than some people prefer, so adding more weight with a heavier rail isn't something I see HK doing.
DD is making the rail, and DD makes longer rails. If the gun sells well enough, presumably DD will make a full-length rail for the gun. Which people will then say is too heavy.

2. -How about a 14.5" version? Again, doubtful, but I'll ask anyway. ?

At this time, HK-USA is not planning to release NFA versions of the MR556. LE agencies and military units wishing for a 14.5" or shorter barrel can buy German-built 416s.

3. -Is it possible to simply chop the bbl down to 14.5" and be GTG, or would that present any gas port sizing issues?

According to the folks at HK I spoke with, it's a simple barrel chop. The gas system is identical on all models regardless of barrel length.

Perhaps they've finally grown tired of releasing sub par versions of all their excellently designed firearms all these years?

Actually, it was the German government which initially insisted on the different pin hole alignment and HK GmbH/HK-USA worked very hard to get that changed so the uppers would be compatible with standard AR lowers. But your version of events certainly sounds sexier...

funnything, someone else said exactly the opposite to your statement about Colt. Everyone has an idea, and I think everyone want to see a name like Colt do well, but all thing take time and carefully planned steps. New direction, follow the market, no matter what Colt does, there will be voice on either side. I just hope Colt will succeed

With regard to chopping the barrel, doesn't the barrel need to be removed from the upper receiver?

I was under the impression that the 416 had a proprietary barrel wrench so who would be able to do the barrel chop?

Also, any info on whether to BCG is the same as the 416 or is it altered?

Thanks for the info Todd

While the 16" may have the same gas block and port size as the 14.5" - the 10.4" gun has a different block.

Interesting that DD is making the rail.

Can we agree to let the fan boy manufacturers corner the market on the "other" length gas systems? Colt is doing just fine without one.

I Disagree. A mid-length, which is the most efficient and practical choice on the 16 inch carbine, is my preference, and that would present more options and level the playing field if they decided to offer one in the future. There is no down side to offering middy into the line up.

I've thought that there might be a few problems with the HK elevated upper rail, but those of you with experience please let me know if I am wrong.

1. That BUIS when down looks like it would be hanging around just waiting to get hit and break off without any support from the upper receiver underneath.

2. Also, wouldn't the elevated rail screw up your cheek weld for most of your optic mount choices? With the lower one third optics, wouldn't that put your cheek weld out of reach?

3. I know there are specific optic mounts and BUIS that were designed with this elevated rail in mind, but aren't they pretty limited right now? Which I'm sure the options would diversify once HKs stuff hit the market though.

4. But with the shorter optic mounts designed for the HK, doesn't that limit options for putting stuff (ex. PEQ) on the rail in front of the optic? Or does it just lower the optic to absolute cowitness height like an eotech and everything would be fine?

It's about time Colt got serious about the 1911 again. They've been sitting on their laurels for far too long and their QC has been suffering for years.

However it kind of pisses me off that they've taken this long to recognize us lowly civvies. I guess losing government contracts will do that to a company.

I'll wait to hear how these new units fare in respects to craftsmanship and reliability.

From what has been said price is tentatively set for the $200-$300 area.

Travis Haley's MARPAT camo accessories are all custom jobs, man. Sorry. I asked him the same thing in my carbine class and he told me he shipped them off to another company and personally paid to have it all done. I wish I would've asked him who painted them for him and how much it cost him, but I forgot to.

I'd personally love to have the MARPAT accessories, especially the CTR and PMAGs.

Semper Fi,

-Paul

I have not seen the camo'ed Magpul stuff you guys describe so it may very well be painted, but there may be another option. I will have to do some digging to see if the company is still around (at least in the capacity of doing custom stuff) but about 8 years ago there was a company doing a process they called dipping. I saw them at the SEMA show in Vegas and they were marketing it for automotive but they said, "If you can dunk it we can do it." Basically they put the material with whatever pattern they chose on the surface of a water bath and dipped the part to be coated. As the part submerged through the material on the water's surface it wrapped the part and formed to it perfectly and was pretty durable. I would imagine at least as durable as the paint on finished we have. They had a few camo patterns, mostly Mossy Oak, "standard" camo, stuff hunter's would like. They sold a lot of trim pieces already done for your interior. I saw a few complete dashes that they did. Pretty neat stuff.

I have a feeling it is Lakota Corp (http://www.lakotacorp.com/decota/default.aspx) that applied this Digital Desert (http://twnindustries.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=49&category_id=1&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=9) film on to Haley's accessories.

iPhone Field Case shall be mine eventually, in the mean time I want one for an iTouch.

That's exactly the process I was describing. Guess I should have finished the thread first :) The stuff I have seen done looks like it was molded in plastic the way it looks and not like it was a surface coating. I never did any wear resistance tests first hand but the parts I saw coated held up well over time but admittedly were not handled like hard use firearm parts, stocks, etc.

I think that is the way the gun manufacturers camo their products, saw the process on American Rifleman TV once.

It looks nice and like it is built like a tank, but it also looks like it is going to be heavy for something that size.

Also, it doesn't look there is enough clearance for someone looking to build a piston rifle using that upper.

All of our 7.62mm guns that have thread barrels are now threaded 3/4 - 24 UNS 2A
The reason for that is 5/8 was just a little to thin and we saw an accuracy loss.

Do you think KAC will produce some of these STTs with a 5/8x24 pitch? From my quick research I found that many AR pattern in .308 use 5/8x24 TPI.

Thanks for the answers!

The sidefolder stock is an interesting technical exercise. It'll be revealing to see what a retail price separately could be - and feedback on a users perception of the cheekweld. The hinge looks well rounded, but it appears it might lay right on the jawbone. It's probably insignificant in use all said.

What products Colt chooses to bring to market is no doubt based on their prespective of the market. Opening a "civilian" sales office at least acknowledges they are facing changes. If someone's special heart throb isn't in the lineup, it could be available eventually. Having significant demand that can be measured - such as LE contracts - would certainly accelerate the process. Otherwise, there's no way to justify the risk.

Coming back into the 1911 market is another clue about their perpective on the future. Looks like machine capacity and retaining skilled labor is high on their list.

The Beretta guy said "Not anytime soon" when asked if it might be available on the US market. His tone was not what I would call "hopeful".

I thought it was a pretty neat gun. It felt very lightweight, but the plastic felt more hard and brittle than some of the other polymer-based guns. Both of those being very subjective observations.

The oddest thing about it was releasing the bolt your trigger finger by pressing down inside the trigger guard.

Very nice pics Lee! I am actually more impressed with the piston AR offering than with the ACR and wondering what the weight will be compared to a LMT MRP piston or LWRC M6A3 carbine? I agree. I wasn't comfortable with the ergonomics of that design, and I thought operating the charging handle instead was more comfortable.

Still it seems interesting. Although, when the rep disassembled the gun it looked like the carrier ran on bare polymer slots, which were quite thin, instead of some sort of embedded metal rails.

Really interesting and thanks for the close-up detail pics.

Just a few observations and questions:

1. The MSASS looks like a JP LRP-07. I know that Remingtom and DPMS are owned by Cerebus, but what is the realtionship with JP? It seems JP and DPMS have worked together on stuff before, but I thought it was just a MN thing about them being close to each other.

2.What is the relationship between the MSR and the RACS? The RACS can take a 700 action or it can take the new change barrel/caliber system and that makes it an MSR?

3. With the MSR, do all the calibers take the same length action and magazines? So it is a 338L rifle that can be made to shoot .308, kind of.

4. Interesting that the TACMOD stock is on that M24E, kind of another JP tie in. Does JP make the Tac-mod, or does Tac-mod make the JP MOR-07?

That RACS is just totally wicked looking. How wrong would it be to buy a $1800 chasis and put a $500 R700 barreled action in it?

They aren't really going to stamp Rail Gun on the side of that 1911 are they? Here's hoping their overall customer service improves at least on the usg sales/service side. We're using LMT's in our training program as a result of Colt seemingly not giving a fcuk about support.

If you look at the sights more than the gun you'll never notice;)

Dunderway
01-30-10, 01:59
It's about time Colt got serious about the 1911 again. They've been sitting on their laurels for far too long and their QC has been suffering for years.

However it kind of pisses me off that they've taken this long to recognize us lowly civvies. I guess losing government contracts will do that to a company.

I'll wait to hear how these new units fare in respects to craftsmanship and reliability.

I don't think that Colt has been worried about a Gov 1911 contract for about 60 years or so. I always hear all of this "don't care about civies" shit regarding Colt.

All of this about a company that still produces single action revolvers, over 25 1911 configurations, and will research their archives for the history of you pistol back to the 1800s? I believe they care about us lowly civilians just a little bit.

They don't offer a full lineup like Mimber, but offer many classic 1911s and modified versions like the Special Combat & Gold Cup which should fill most folks 1911 needs. They did listen when they brought back the S70, which I believe is here to stay.

Colt may not have all of the options under the rainbow, but ask most 1911 smiths what they would like you to send to them or what 1911 gurus what the best OOTB gun is, and you will probably come back to Colt.

This is all from a person that carries a "luck of the draw QC" Springfield 1911, and doesn't own a single Colt.

On Remington's Military Products Division website, the posted weights for the MSR are:

- 13 lbs with 22" fluted barrel and loaded 5-rd magazine
- 17 lbs with 22" fluted barrel, scope, bipod, loaded 5-rd magazine, and AAC Titan suppressor

The M40A5 is 16.5 lbs, but uses a non-fluted heavy barrel at 24"; 25" overall with suppressor adaptor. If what I was told is true and the Marine Corps has selected this chassis, the 0317s are going to be humping a heavy ****ing rifle. I'm not sure what type of scope base the MSR comes with, but that would have to be swapped out for a 30 MOA base, too (although that likely would not affect weight at all, or perhaps just negligibly). Also, whatever the difference in weight is between the optic which Remington used for their specs and the S&B 3-12X that is actually used, as well as night vision accessories or that other bulky-ass nightvision-only optic (can't remember the name of that heavy bitch).

The MSR has that long metal forearm with rails all over it. Shit is entirely unnecessary. Does Remington think that scout snipers will throw lights, fore-grips, and other fancy BS on a sniper rifle??? I can understand a PEQ/2 or PAQ/4, but the spotter will have those on his M4 and the shooter often times has his own M4 as well. Just stupid.

"Designed by operators, for operators," my ass. More like "Designed by gunsmithing nerds with input from a chairborne LtCol in a sweetheart deal, for operators." Or perhaps, instead of "...for operators," they mean "...for civilians that are in love with cool rails." Remington designed a crew-served 7.62x51 sniper rifle. First ever.

Put in more perspective, the old M40A1 weighed 14.5 lbs. Weights need to be kept closer to that. Because of the focus on urban warfare in Iraq from '03 - '09, manufacturers of all sorts of military gear started to forget about how important weight is in a fighter's equipment. Because of this, the guys in Afghan will pay the price.

I suspect the bitching actually did help. That, and the fact that this is the first time HK (along with the HK45, which was more plug and play as far as manufacturing) has had a US manufacturer.

Perhaps someone, who actually spoke German, who they actually respected, called them up and said, "HEY don't be such lazy asses. The rep that I spoke with for about 20 minutes told me that the piston uppers were going to be a conversion unit only. The Remington ACR was going to be available to civlians, but it would be the version with the polymer lower and not the machined aluminum (or whatever material) the so-called military version would have.

He also said that it had only one gas setting and it was supposed to be reliable suppressed, un-suppressed and with .223 and 5.56 ammo. According to him the Remington ACR stll had a few bugs to be worked out in that department.

armakraut
02-01-10, 02:43
The US import laws saved us from them importing the MR223 lowers and barrels, which are no bueno for import. If you've looked at the import hassles AK's have gone through, this development was no surprise. Since HK is basically required by law to make the barrels and receivers here, why replicate the odd pin location?

Lets start with the German barrel. For the barrel to be importable for sale to US citizens it would have attached to a "sporting rifle" with no evil features. Unfortunately, you can't import an MR223 receiver, or even a HK416 receiver for those purposes, period. The HK416 and MR223 both accept AR mags (non sporting). Since the Germans would have to completely redesign the MR223 receiver (like a Saiga's) to not accept regular capacity mags (pmags don't count), HK was left with the choice of making the barrels and receivers here, or simply not make the rifles at all.

Did all this drive the price up? Probably.

Reminds me of my favorite handgun... The Browning HP... I wonder if it is as simple.
Both the original Bren10 and the Fortis are 75s. Meaning, they use the design of the original CZ-75 designed & introduced in 1975 but never internationally patented.

Like the 1911, there are MANY 75s made around the globe, including the USA, Americas, Europe and Asia. Examples include:

Colt Z40
Springfield Armory P9
Armalite AR24

CZ75
Desert Eagle baby Eagle/Jerich 941 from IMI or IWI
Swiss Sphinx
Tanfoglio and witness
Norinco N75
Imbel (not sure of model #; not imported to USA)

etc

Some features of the old Browning Hi Power are incorporated into 75s. Barrel lockup is very similar.

Why couldn't they have just sent over the "416 CAD program" ??? It is already in existence, and has been in existence, long since before the MR223....

In regards to lobbying for the cause, I'll admit I sent my fair share of umpteen billion emails to Hk, requesting they not screw this project up with a misplaced rear takedown pin, despite the fact that I doubt I'll afford one anytime soon, if ever.

I like the Otterbox Commuter over any case that uses soft polymer as the outer layer, at least, any that I have seen. The whole reason is that the slick hard plastic of the Commuter's outside case that goes over the rubber lets my iPhone slide more easily out of my jeans pocket when I'm seated. I don't use any screen cover, never seen one that didn't tug up at the edges after a few weeks, no matter how nice it was to begin with.

That said, I like the Magpul philosophy of "Seal it" for hard use of the phone - I still want to see one in person and see if it'll work for me.

Hey guys, especially HK guys, what are the differences in the uppers of the 416 & MR556/223 (the one we will be able to buy). Are there any differences in the piston system?

Well, I'm not a moron, but I am a guy. Walking around the floor, I did pause to eye the eye candy. ATI, Americansniper.org, the MAgpul foursome, the Dillon babe at Arsenal, Sabre. McMilllian had a very tasteful hottie as well. She clothing of course had ladies (picked up info for my wife) :D

What was interesting was the hardnoses at ASP had what looked like a hooker and Perrazzi had a very well heeled lady who was quite conversant with their line (no way I can afford one though).

Regarding the OTP regarding cattails, I have one on my NF 1-4 and it make power changes very fast, not as long as in the photos so it doesn't get caught on stuff. $70 is reasonable compared to the $1200 scope and $200 LaRue mount.

The guy in their booth would only tell me it would be a "low priced" suppressor, but I never thought it'd be that low. Thanks killswitch.

It is all stamped sheet metal parts with only a few machined components....keeping the price low is driving point.

Is that a carbine length bilevel rail with a cutout for the FSB?

Yes it is!

The new grips look much better! I might have to purchase another Glock for myself, except for the backstrap angle, I love my Gen III 19!

The Gen 4 Glock grip with out any strap insert are the smallest of any Glock ever produced.

Thanks for all the great pics, SMGLee.

I've noticed that there are those blue tags on just about all guns I've seen pictures of, just curious (never having been to SHOT before) as to what they are for.

Blue tags are placed by SHOT safety officials to indicate the weapon has been inspected and meet the SHOT display gun safety requirements. Mostly it is just to make sure there is no firing pin that will protrude from the bolt face.

Smg, their AR platform, 556/7.62 is it in house build or contracted out, I have their pamphlet but it doesn't really say anything. Thanks.

I am not sure, they will not say but from the look of it, they might be sourcing the parts much like their 1911s.

Thanks for the replies guys. I can't wait to see the finished version and hopefully be able to purchase one for myself later.
What kind of accuracy are you getting out of these compared to the M21 and Mk11/M110? I am thinking that the bottom rail will change POI when using the bipod unless it is very sturdy.
Dustin

I have a very good friend in the SOCOM community that did the testing and eval for the SCAR, he mentioned to me once that the standard SCAR-H was getting 8MOA at 800yrds and he seen the SSR shooting 5MOA at 1000. There are talks of building a SCAR-H in DMR role with a added stamped steel rail plate in front of the receiver to give more rail real estate for NVD.

the SCAR is a serious contender in the precision rifle role, it has out performed(reliability), out priced(cheaper out of the door cost to Uncle Sam) and out shoot the M21, M110 and Mk11s.

Great pics! That SPR is one sexy biatche!

that is the new M6A2 configuration, but later this year, the M6A2 will also get a M6A3 mid length gas piston system but without the adjustable gas regulator, thus making a simpler and lighter..just the way I like it. there will be a mid length M6A2 in my purchase future with the twist flute barrel and the new rail.

Do you know when they plan to release the suppressors? The rep I talked to also said he wasn't sure if they would be sold exclusively through the same company that is selling their firearms or not, any info on this as well?

I was set on ordering a suppressor from another maker before SHOT but I'm curious if I should wait to order one of these as well, or two. :D

"Yes, there are differences. *The UK version has an 18" stainless barrel that is black oxide coated and has a case / accessory pack that comes with it - a very large, detailed pack. *The commercial version has a 16" chrome lined chrome moly vanadium barrel. *Comes with front sight, rear sight, *mag and owners manual. *We are offering the commercial version with a 16" stainless upgraded version model but not yet available. *First 308's for commercial market will ship by end of March. *

As always, Magpul did a great job with the design......HOWEVER, I cannot believe they couldn't whip up a kick ass belt clip holder like my OtterBox cover came with. I think I have the Defender model and it came with one of the best hard plastic belt clips. It rides on my visor in the cruiser, my seat caddy, my duty belt, jeans, and rifle bag molle while I am at the range.

Dear Magpul, can you please look at the OtterBox Defender series and see if you can whip up a indestructable plastic belt holder for your case. It only makes sense, oh..., and of course in all the covers to match.

Thanks, :D

Having used the case now for about 2 weeks, I like it more than I did when I first got it at the SHOT Show. Though I wish the material was a little softer to be more impact absorbent (from a fall -- the case I was using is an all silicone iSkinz) this one feels good. It has the "oily" rubber/plastic feel (feel only -- it is not oily at all) and the phone feels good in the hand.

I have not removed any of the ports in order to make sure no water gets in at all. I just pop the end out at night to charge (I don't use headphones so that one just stays in)...

This is a nice simple case. I have no problems at all with it sliding in and out of my pants pocket. And not being slick hard plastic it stays on my truck seat next to me better than my original speck hard plastic case ever did.

Very well said (written).
