View Full Version : How do you "say" the names of cartridges?

I'm not sure how to ask this...it would be nice to know how to "say" or "pronounce" calibers. I didn't know what else to do to educate myself but put a long list of calibers and ask.

For instance is .380 Auto referred to as a "thrity-eight auto" (or just "thrity-eight"), or is it referred to as a "three-eighty auto" (or just "three-eighty")? Etc. Etc.

Here's the long list if anyone cares to help (snagged from wikipedia). Since the list is so long, maybe just the main most used ones? Or maybe there is a better way to educate on this?

There are probably a lot of different ways to say the names of different calibers, some of the names may even be regional. Like the "aught six" and "seven mag". I know that I dont allways get some of them right. I just pronounce them like they are written.

I've wondered this myself, but that certainly is an...ambitious (daunting?) list of cartridges you've pasted!

Are there a few in particular that you were wondering about?

I'll take a stab at your example: .380ACP. Most people I talk to say "three eighty".

I agree that there are regional or personal variations on this. I asked a guy at work what he hunts with. He is an outdoorsman, but not a real gun enthusiast. He replied "seven em em Rem mag" (7mm Remington Magnum). I had never heard "em em" for mm before - for example, nobody I know says "nine em em".

military types like to say "mike mike," from the phonetical alphabet.
