The Magpul Dynamics TTPs (among others) seem to regard the VFG as a handstop, with the meat of the hand flowing from the VFG to the handguard. So, I thought why not this?:

I cut a shorty TD VFG down, drilled out the bottom, cut the threads off the endcap (leaving just a lip to secure the cap), dehorned the top edges, and glued the whole thing together. So far, it's been working very well and has not affected the way I shoot drills. I like the streamlined profile and the lessened chance of the VFG snagging on anything. The size is perfect, and my hand ends right at the bottom of the VFG cap when I use my standard "non-chicken-choker" VFG hold.

I would not be surprised to see similar configs come from VFG manufacturers as the "updated" VFG hold becomes more popular.

Personally, I like it! That being said, I don't tend to grab and have a full hold of the VFG, but as described in the Magpul Dynamics DVD, even before I watched it. Funny thing, the more one shoots, the more one figures out what really works for them. . .Of course, Your Methods May Vary accordingly so.

I'm a recent convert to using the VFG as an index point. I used to shoot with a slick rifle, but the more I played with VFGs, the more I liked it not as a broomhandle grip but as an index. The stubby style VFGs are good, your potential design looks pretty awesome as well.

The LaRue FUG in its stubby form fits my had perfect--half on the FUG, half on the handguard. it also gives a bit more purchase when holding the rifle in low ready position.

I think they would be better used if they were turned around backwards.

Im going to order both and I will let you know how it goes once I get a new rail system to put them on. I agree though...the bottom one is getting flipped around.

I'm mused about the whole VFG topic enough lately, but I think you're on to something. Interesting how we started out with no VFGs, went to the full length models, and then seem to have progressively made our way back to increasingly minimalist solutions as a community. This may well be where we end up, as it is nice to have something there, but less is often more.

I really like the idea of this...

This isn't listed by ERGO. Who makes this? Is there a version that will attach to normal (non-rail) handguards?
