I just got my shipment of these in and thought I would share some pics and thoughts. The optic is revolutionary in it design and is the best optic that ELCAN has ever made IMHO. Here are some of the key features that seperate it from all others:

1. 1X to 4X with a flip of a lever
2. No change in eye relief (whether your on 1X or 4X)
3. Dual illumination (can illuminate the center dot or illuminate the cross hairs)
4. Dot and crosshairs are visible in full sun

There are also some down sides to the optic:

1. ARMS mount
2. Heavy (1 pound 5 ounces)
3. Eye relief is around 2" on 1X setting
4. Lever to rotate power setting is somewhat hard to find

I want to love this optic in the worst possible way, but the eye relief on 1X really bugs me. I can get 4-5 inches of eye relief from almost any 1-4 variable powered optic. I am not a nose to charging handle shooter, but with this optic, I will have to be in order to get the full FOV. The ARMS mount is VERY tight on my rail. So tight in fact that I had to pry the levers open with a tool.
The external elevation and windage doesn't sit all that well with me either, but I think they would be VERY difficult to bump and change your zero.

All in all, this is one of the most interesting optics to hit the Tactical market since the S&B Short Dot IMHO. It is also much cheaper than the S&B! :D

Regarding the mount: It should be everyone's duty to voice their opinion at the Elcan booth the next time they're at a trade show (I.E. Shot Show). Together, we can make the world a better place. That's the ONLY thing preventing me from getting one.

I agree. The problem is that you generally get the "sales force" at these shows. They generally do not care or even understand that there is a problem.

I also know that Elcan is working with LT on putting their superior mount onto the DR. We shall see if it makes its way to the Civy market or not.

IF they could guarantee they solved the zero loss issues due to the mount system and IF they had a Larue mount I would be interested.

Is seems they are getting rid of all the prototype versions they had for SOCOM...

It will be prob this saturday or early next week before i can head back to the range. I'll check mine out with multipe removals to check zero at 100 yards. I wish it had larue mounts.

That would be nice, but I doubt it.

Even with the ARMS I'm interested seeing I would love to have an all in one package rather then an Eotech and a seperate scope.

I spent some quality time with this optic today (bench work and moving/shooting drills). It was full sun today and the steel was white. I had no problem seeing the illuminated dot and optic was quick on target. It is starting to grow on me. :D

Can you give us a ballpark price point on these? I couldn't find mention of it in the thread nor could find them on your site.
Thanks

I was looking at one for sale (private party) that came in a desert finish . Is this a prototype, do they run with different colors in SOCOM testing?

I saw these at the Elcan Booth at the AUSA show last year...it is really a nice optice, and I LOVE the 1-4x throw lever.

I will probably get one.

I have been checking into 1-4x optics and so far I have not run into any I like.. I just can't find anything that will beat the ACOG.. The short dot is the best I have used out of all of them.. I have not used this yet, I have really never seen one around befor.. But even with the short dot I dont like how much it is like a scope rather then a combat optic, like the ACOG.. I have found out of trying lot's of setups that if you want to go from 1-3 power and not have that blackout that scopes like the Accupoint and shortdot do then the Aimpoint with the flip 3x mag seem's to really be the best.. But over the last few months trying out new things with my ACOG it seems I can shoot just as well in CQ with my ACOG as I can with a red dot.. It really does take some learning but once you get it and learn to use BAC, it works out very well and you dont have to worry about fliping, ajusting, ect ect.. I guess that really is why the ACOG is the best Combat optic you can get.. the speed of it is just unmatched..

1- this thread is over 2 years old.
2- this thread is not about ACOGs
3- the ACOG blows in actual use at close range and low-light.

We have been running these Elcans for about 2 months now. To a man we all HATE them. The main issue is they do not hold their zero when shifting from 1-4x. This is a major problem. I think the idea behind this Elcan is cool but not practical. Everybody here wants their ACOGs back and if we can't use that then the EOTECH is the only way to go. Trying to go through SFAUC with this optic was a major pain in the butt.

For some, the BAC works for others. I am just as fast with my TA33 as I am with an aimpoint, at close range, and in low light.

When there is sufficient light for the reticle to be illuminated it works just fine, or when shooting at light targets.
The problem arises indoors, especially if you need to use a white light and your target is wearing dark clothing.
I do not mean to be condescending, but training with, or actual use of the optic in full-spectrum reveals the issues with the design, and thus the reason that Mini-Red Dots (MRDs) are being attached to guns that are outfitted with the 3X or 4X ACOGs.

Regardless, this is not a thread about ACOGs, it is about the 1-4 Elcan, which has issues of it's own. If a discussion about ACOGs is desired, I would be happy to share my experiences (as I am sure others would) on a new thread with that as the topic.

I have no problem picking it up with white light, and while engaging dark targets in close quarters, in the odd circumstances I cannot pick it up, I put the center of the optic center mass.

Mini-Red Dots (MRDs) are being attached to guns that are outfitted with the 3X or 4X ACOGs.
Had one, took it off, the change of point of impact varied way too much for me with it mounted on top, and the cheekweld messed me up, and after timing I found myself to be significantly faster just using the BAC.

Lol! Ill keep that in mind.

But yes, you are right this thread isnt about that, we could start another one I guess.
