All,

I have recently been bitten by the AR15 bug. And over the last 7 years I have pieced together a nice collection of parts. I am just now getting around to building the firearms. Was 4 years in Germany, and 3 years in Cali before that!

I am considering making the purchase (several months in not a year from now) of a 6.8 SPC complete upper and a few magazines. Specifically wanting this for hunting deer and feral hogs, if ever I get the chance.

I haven't seen much on this board about this caliber, am I missing something?

If you want to shoot deer and hogs it is definitely the best option.

Absolutely! Be prepared to spend more on ammo and mags, but other than that the components are priced the same as 5.56mm parts. Properly built 6.8mm weapons are very accurate, add more punch to the platform, and are just a hell of a lot of fun to shoot.

my 6.8 has taken its fair share of deer and hogs. The problem comes in when you shoot a 6.8 in an AR. Its not like a 6.8 in a bolt gun where you might shoot, 20rds in a sitting. With an AR you might go through 100rds or more, adn that gets $$$.

reload the 6.8, and its no more than a few dollars more than 223 to reload.

These are the times where MRP's make a ton of sense. I am doing two MRP 6.8's right now. One is a combo gun with exact matching 5.56 and 6.8 components, and one a dedicated 6.8 precision system.

I see them as a specialized weapon. For hunting and defense although training may be limited unless someone is giving you ammo.

I've been thinking of one as well, it would be for hunting, which would be limited.

For most gun-handling/malfunction drills, it does not matter whether you are shooting 5.56 mm or 6.8 mm. Play like the big boys and get two identically set-up uppers, one in 5.56 mm and another in 6.8 mm. Obviously put a thousand or so rounds through your 6.8 mm to ensure function and zero, but then save it primarily for for combat/duty/hunting/SD use. Use your 5.56 mm for functional/rote training and when 5.56 mm ammo is available for free. This is one of the great things about going with any of the 6.x mm choices in an AR...

That would be the plan, just for hunting, not a lot of training or practice!

I haven't decided on this yet. It is a very expensive upgrade, and I could easily just got get a bolt gun for the purpose for much less $

I'll keep tossing it around!

You could. I got this for the cost of a quality 6.8 upper. It definitely looks better and in 6.5X55 it will drop anything elk or smaller with one well-placed shot:

Nice! CZ right? Does that floor plate hing or is it a mag?

CZ right?
Correct, 550 Full Stock

Does that floor plate hing or is it a mag?
Hinged. Milled steel, no stampings or castings. :D
All long action 550s (including the 6.5X55) are traditional hinged floorplates. The CZ plate looks identical to that on the pre 64 Model 70, except it doesn't have the middle screw.

That's really nice-it just has class.
I've wanted to get one for a long time. What kind of accuracy do you get from it? Are they see through rings? I haven't looked in Brownell's lately, does Warne make rings for that?

Those are Warne Maxima QD rings made to fit the CZ 19 mm dovetails. They are not see through, but being QD, they don't really need to be.

Accuracy? Just under 1.5 MOA. These are ten shots from sling-supported prone (like I do most all of my shooting) at 200 yards. The first two at the top were sighters. Load is 45.8 grains of H4350 in Lapua cases, Fed 210 M primers, Hornady 129 grain Spire Points.

The 6.8spc round in an AR has been a very handy "truck rifle" on my farm and the extra power makes it more versatile than the .223. You can tag deer, hogs, etc.. and still have fine defensive gun with very little difference in recoil. The ammo cost is relative. Pay more, get more for it. Although it would be fun...I bet most of us don't shoot thousands of rounds yearly anyway.

Why can't more people get that through their heads?

I want to assemble my own 6.8 upper eventually but it's not replacing any of my 5.56s. It'll just supplement them. I'll probably use a Noveske barrel.

Right on guys. I have a (not exactly identical) .223 to match my 6.8spc. In the event the ole SHTF I don't expect the 6.8 stuff will be easy to find. You definately want a .223 AR or a least an upper you can switch back to.

Set up a chromoly 20 inch 6.8 with free float rail on my AR for deer hunting . I am thinking of mating this to a lower with a two stage trigger and Magpul UBR when it comes available. Mike
