Saw these at shot and was shocked by how nice they were for the money. These are probably the nicest CH's on the market today.

I believe they are forged and are alum.

The latch on them is the kicker. Simply fantastic IMHO.

They are $25.

Have you compared it to the new serrated PRI latch by any chance?
Just wondering if it sticks as far out.

The new PRI latch is nice, but is $22 for JUST the latch. It does not stick out as far as the PRI.

To be honest, that is the going rate ($20 for the CH and $20 for the latch).

The LMT CH has changed all that now though.

It is easier to grasp in a high stress situation. Just like extended slide release, mag release or safety lever on a 1911. It also comes in handy if you have a scope mounted that gets in the way and makes it harder to reach a standard charging handle latch.

The latch allows for you to operate the CH with two fingers better/faster.

You should ONLY be pulling the CH back with ONE hand!

USPS is a no go as I am too big to be running to the post office. I need pick up at my store when I want. I also need insurance (which is free with UPS) and real time tracking. I also need everything to integrate into my shopping cart. Again, no go with USPS.

When I was a small time dealer, USPS would work fine, but no longer.

MIM that is made properly, is VERY good and you will not break it.

The PRI latches and the LMT's look very similar to me in how they are made.

spamsammich
02-13-09, 11:57
Milled latches is asking a LOT for this price point. MIM is just fine in this application IMHO. Are you actually complaining about a qualitly, forged CH with an extended latch that costs as much as an extended latch by itself? Interesting.

Why isn't the whole thing MIMd??

Good question. Maybe it is not cost efficient? My guess though is that it is too heavy for its application.

Remember that MIM parts are used in a lot of 1911 and other combat handguns. So I think that a latch that MIGHT be MIM'd will be just fine. ;)

One last comment on LMT CH's. Since LMT has .Mil contracts (with CRANE no less), they are required to meet quality specs set forth by the US Govt. Their CH's (and latches) meet this standard.

They just came out with this new one so I cannot say as to whether or not they have shipped any out YET. They are no longer making their CH's with the standard type latch so any .mil guns ordered WILL be receiving this latch.

Why isn't the whole thing MIMd??

My first guess would be a cost effectiveness issue. Perhaps the tool for injection molding a part this big is too costly to engineer and maintain for their needs. I've worked with engineering teams that designed and manufactured injection molds for high glass fill plastics and the cost can be quite substantial. I can only imagine that the tools (molds) for MIM are even more costly and wear faster than a tool designed for relatively low temp polymer materials.

It looks really similar to the PRI Combat Latch. My PRI latch arrived yesterday. I really like it.

I have a PRI latch and would personally rather use the factory latch . In fact, my PRI "Gas Buster" latch has since been relegated to my home defense AR. The PRI latch was a good concept, but I have found that it does not work with a Ceiner .22LR conversion kit - not really sure why.

Mine also broke during a Pat Rogers class. Which unfortunately meant that I ended up using a standard (factory) latch because the PRI requires a different sized roll-pin to work. YMMV.

I got mine from Grant yesterday, and put it in my 10.5" LMT when I got home. After doing some basic drills, my initial impression is that this is the best charging handle I've ever used. I have not tried PRI's Combat Latch, but I have two rifles with charging handles fitted with PRI's Big Latch, which I like and have been using over the past two years or so. But I have to say I like this LMT latch better. I'm a lefty, and I find this latch easier to operate with either hand, with gloves on or without. It seems to stick out just enough to make it easy to engage, but not enough to snag or cause problems. I think someone really did their homework in designing this.

I only hope they become more readily available in the future, because I wouldn't mind adding them to a few more rifles.

Thanks again, Grant!

Wow. This throws a wrench in my plans. I would love to see one of the LMT latches now. I was working on a review of the Combat Latch here:

http://www.therearemanylikeit.com/beta/gear/pri-combat-latch.adp

I just wanted to make sure that I emphasized that I have the PRI Gas Buster charging handle. Not just the latch. I think it may be the way they have it shaped at the front.

According to the guys at PRI the 9mm version should work and they offered to replace the one I had with it. I just saw no real advantage to it and declined electing instead to use a standard charging handle.

FWIW, PRI has given me nothing but excellent Customer Service. When my charging handle broke at that class last summer, they had me ship it in for inspection. I think they sent me back a whole new charging handle. YMMV.

It seems to stick out just enough to make it easy to engage, but not enough to snag or cause problems. I think someone really did their homework in designing this.

I would go along with this assessment, like Goldilocks, I think it is just right!

Got mine the other day and swapped it in. Very nice. To echo the comments posted above, it seems like the best of both worlds IMO. Now LMT just needs to make a steel variety. Nice product at a fair price. Thanks for the heads up Grant.

Mine from Chad was waiting for me in the mail when I got home from work this evening. I spent about half an hour working with it, and it's simply fantastic.

I am also absolutely amazed at how fast it got here all the way from Utah. I wasn't really looking for it to arrive before tomorrow.

Thanks a bunch, Chad. Massive kudos for the superlative service! Heck, he even pronounced my surname correctly! :D

Same here: Chad at e-guns rocks! Good phone order, fast delivery, and even nice packaging job.

I much prefer the new LMT latch design to PRI's big latch. The only reason I can figure the PRI would be superior is in slamming back the CH on one side only...but you're not supposed to do that anyhow, right? ;)

Other than the latch, it looks identical to my old LMT CH.

There were tiny burrs at the top/end of the latch (above the hole), which I made disappear with a whetstone. Absolutely no big deal.

They had just been delivered to SGC on 2/4/09 without the new style CH. And you're right about the non-H buffer and SA BCG.

I ordered 2 for me from LMT along with 2 ambi-safeties so I just cleared the minimum $100 purchase from them. Ordered 3/16 and arrived 3/20. I thought I'd throw up a few more comparison pictures so people could see the differences. go price out a badger tactical or pri extended latch and compare the price to this complete charging handle. If you've never handled a gun with an extended latch, you probably won't see the benefit. Also, this question was already answered at least 3x in this very thread. If you need 2 hands to pull a charging handle back, it's time to hit the gym.

"I ordered directly through LMT on April 4th. Had to purchase two of the CHs and two ambi safeties to reach $100 minimum.

I received the shipping date via an emailed response to the question of when they might ship. I am still stunned that they knew the exact date it would ship that far out!

At the price they are asking for these, I cannot see why I shouldn't order one for each AR that I own. At least as a high quality backup to the gas busters I already own.

I'm a big believer in the free market, and LMT can charge whatever they want and sell them for whatever the market will bear.

The same goes for us customers: I wanted one of these for $20-25, but I'm not interested for $45.

I also just got a BCM from you (stupid me, I ordered a Mod3 when I wanted a Mod4). I prefer the LMT to the Mod3, because that Mod3 just sticks out so far. So they cloned the upper gas deflector. Do they have the lower ones too?
