I have learned of a class available in my area which begins late Feb. The purpose of the class is to obtain a "30 state concealed weapons permit". I can't find any official info on any such permit. Anyone know anything about this?

I would contact the instructor and ask.

Most likely it will include Florida or Utah. I have a Utah as well as my Indiana lifetime LTCH (License To Carry a Handgun).

Some states require training and others require for your permit to be issued by your state of residence.

Indiana is a shall issue state that requires no training and allows for an 18 year old to apply for their LTCH.

UTAH + PA will get you most states that allow carry.

this map gives you a good idea of recipricol states, but it's always a good idea to contact that state and verify.

This sounds like Utah, they will issue permits to nonresidents whereas most states will not.

IIRC by getting the Utah and Florida CCW's (both offer non-resident permits) you are covered in approx. 30 states. Both states allow you to mail the information in for issuance.

You don't need a course. Just apply for FL and Utah non res CCW. Both can be had from their .gov web sites. Takes some leg work and is a PITA, but is worth doing.

I have FL, Utah, MA (primary), ME, NH, NV.

Will,

You are incorrect as far as Utah is concerned. I was required by the State of Utah to show that I completed a course.

This is straight from the Utah BCI Website.

Weapon Familiarity Certification. Applicants must complete a firearms familiarity course certified by BCI. The course must be completed before you apply for a permit. Please have your instructor complete the certification information on the application. View a list of (in-state) (out-of-state) certified instructors.

The exception would be for Florida because as I understand it they have a fairly liberal policy that will allow you to show proof of firearms knowledge or proficiency such as, NRA firearms courses, Hunter safety course, DD214 and/ or letters signed by firearms instructors.

I have a resident VA CHP and a non-resident Utah and PA concealed carry permits. This give me about 31/32 states.

Utah does require a course, although I have noticed that these are offerred in other states and not just in Utah. The course does not require any demonstration of skills.

The tool that I frequently use to help answer such questions is the interactive map creator available from a number of web sites. Try this one: http://HandgunLaw.us/

.

Good points. The course I took at the time for the above purposes, was Utah and FL approved, which I actually took in NV while at SWAT Challenge and had some time to kill...Thus, I recommend people who are taking a course for getting Utah and or FL non res CCW, make sure the course is approved by those states. As mentioned, it is a PITA and leg work, and a few $$$$ out of pocket, but for us non LEO types, worth it if one wants what is almost a national CCW.

The reciprocal map has changed (improved!) quite a bit since I got the FL and Utah non res CCW. Those were the two "must haves" if you wanted to cover a large portion of the US.

The Utah course I took required me to demonstrate that I could unload and make safe both a revolver and a semi auto.

The Utah permit was pretty easy to get. Took the course and got my certificate and application, went to the State Police office and got fingerprinted, mailed everything off. Due to the high number of applications that Utah was getting at the time it took 5 months mailbox to mail box.

Utah is apparently starting to crack down on issuing their CCW's out of state, due to some problems.

I was just in the process of signing up for one of the local UT CCW classes, and learned that Utah has introduced legislation aimed at shutting down the UT certification courses that are being taught out of state. Bottom line, they want to still issue the UT CCW permits, but if this passes you'd have to go to UT to GET the certification.

Strangely enough, some UT gun owners are working together with gun grabbers on this legislation:

Most states (FL for me) with a formal training and licensing requirement, do not have reciprocal agreements with states that don't have a similar procedure and requirement. You would be charged with carrying a concealed weapon if caught here. You are better off getting a Utah and FL concealed carry permit or a combination there of, to cover you in most US states.

Eligibility: http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/weapons/apply.html

How to apply: http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/weapons/apply.html

Florida's CCW/Permit is now good for 7 years as of June 11, 2008. If you have one prior to that date, it's good for only 5 years.

I plan on keeping my Fl permit up to date for the foreseeable future even though I have relocated several years ago.

The one I took (in Utah County) did not require that. The main requirement appears to be a certified instructor and that the course lasts the correct number of hours. The number of courses being offerred has increased significantly and I noticed that one gun store is now offerring courses 5 days a week. I expect the wait time for BCI to process the applications is still increasing.
