I've noticed no Sig rifles/carbine in these posts -- I am guessing the the 68 GCA and the 89 Import ban is the cause.

I still prefer an M4 -- and we are getting Hk416's in the newyear due to the failure some of the team have had with the 552's recoil spring guide snapping off.

Mainly posted since I was bored ;)

Yes I KNOW I dont have a light - its on my M4, this is a car gun - or I'd bling it out with light and vert grip and PEQ2B

I added some velcro attachment (the loop closures from the PEQ kits) to the handguard -- they can affix a G2 if nec.

but the main reason for the lack of light etc is

my James Bond rig

Isn't Sig supposed to release a new 5.56mm carbine at SHOT?

Now that puts the W back in PDW.

The 556's are supposed to be shipping any day now, with promises of having guns on store shelves by Christmas. If you go over to sigforum.com, they have a couple of active threads, and are, for the most part, totally freaking out about it.

Not an exact 552 and it's still missing a bunch of tacti-cool accessories..

Wow. There's a 551 on Gunbroker Here--> http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=62987430

$11,000

I think the 556 release has actually made the value of the 55x go up

I was able to put a few magazines through a 552 a while back. It was neat, but the trigger took a little getting used to. All in all I would think about one if the practical chance arose.

koalorka,

With the sole exception of lacking a 1913 rail atop the receiver, this is something that I’d like to add to my collection. Is this a 556 that you have modified into an SBR, or is this a pic of a 552?

If it is a 556 modified into a semi auto 552 clone, could I ask you to give the details on where you acquired the parts forward the receiver and the name of your ‘smith?

One of the many benefits of living in Canada.. ;) It isn't an actual SG 552 since the 55x series were classified as prohibited, but one particular dealer in Alberta convinced Swiss Arms to make a few modifications to the SG 540 lower receiver, which was inspected by a federal lab and deemed a new variant, making the rifle importable. This specific model is marketed as the "CQB".
I prefer the diopter sight version over the flattop as I think the SIG irons are one of the nicest sets I've ever used (only factory sights I've come across fitted with tritium inserts). I do have a receiver-mounted B&T Picatinny rail on the way, probably put a Docter red-dot on it. I've rotated a lot of guns, but this mean little carbine is a keeper. I'll post a few pictures of the updated setup later on.

EDITED: Corrected.

Canada. Ahhh… Ok. That explains much. But still this opens the door to possibilities. Now that I know Sig does have the parts I need to make a semi auto copy of the 552, question is can I legally get the parts needed into the US? (Anybody have an idea here?)

Your carbine is almost exactly what I have in mind for a project I’ve been frothing at the mouth over once I heard that Sig was gonna release the 556. It’s going to take some doing and jumping through BATFE’s hoops, but I am quite excited about it and seeing something so close is reassuring to me that the project is feasible. I’ll be eagerly awaiting your further pictures :)

Right now I’m thinking about keeping the iron sights as you have on your rifle, but trimming the rear portion of the 1913 rail to allow the rear sight the space it requires. Then, the addition of a Larue cantilever mount loaded with a Trijicon Tri Power optic should cover the bases needed to fulfill my inflated ego ;)

My complements on your skillful maneuvering through the system to acquire such a fine rifle!

Well you can't import the barrel right now if that helps.

Hey, here's the Canadian Swiss Arms dealer:

http://www.theshootingedge.com/

Give em' a call, I know they ship certain parts to the US, including furniture sets. I know some 556 owners down south have already managed to replace the stock 556 handguards with factory SIG carbine length hanguards. The SIGArms 556 pistol will also be compatibile with Swiss Arms HG's, that could be a great basis for a 552 clone.

Good luck on your project!

Here's some more Canadian Swiss porn:

A few things need to be corrected here. Some information needs to strengthened out here without all these wink wink nudge nudge thing

The Swiss Arms CQB is not just a name change with a few modifications made.
It is a legally a rifle based on the SG540, despite some resemblance to the SG55X series.

People need to think twice before posting disinformation on the internet.

Original post corrected. BTW, dissinformation is a deliberate method of spreading false information. That was not my intention. Just trying to shed some light on our quirky laws.

Thanks much for your guidance Koalorka. When the supply of 556 rifles catches up with demand down here in the states, I will begin this project, though that could be some time. – I REFUSE to pay $500 - $800 more just because the few dealers who have ‘em feel like scalping the price.

The good news is that Sig is supposed to be shipping 556 carbines with the side folding stocks in a few months. This would work nicely into the program as well. It may pay to be a bit patient here.
