So I am purchasing a new AR, my first, and I'm wondering if I am going overkill with the POF 308, which will cost about 2800 with the troy front/rear buis added on. My thought here was that I could deer hunt with this rifle, as well as shoot paper, etc..... Would I be better off with a more light weight AR, and just buying a Rem 700 or something of that sort for deer hunting? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Mike

Some AR's I'm considering are the POF, LWRC, Noveske, and LMT......

An AR10 is expensive for a paper puncher that does a little hunting also. Are you planning on doing high-volume training? If so, you might want to consider a 5.56. Ammo and mags cost substantially more. Not to mention the availability of parts procurement and adaptability even in this market.

The POF 308 was the only one I was considering in 308. The others mentioned would be in .223. I guess I would like to attend some classes in the future, but I don't see that happening for a while as I am about to be a father in April. I just thought the 308 would cover all bases, but I'm not opposed to having two rifles either. Thanks for the response.

A basic LMT, Colt 6920, Daniel Defense, or Charles Daly DM4LE would be a great place to start. The Noveske also, but only if you can manage to find and afford one.

If I was starting from scratch, that new Daniel Defense rifle is a great package for the money. Lots of extras for a great price.

You can't go wrong with either a Colt or LMT. If you want to do training and paper punching, go with 5.56/.223 for the above mentioned reasons. For hunting, you might consider getting a 6.5G/6.8 SPC/.458 SOCOM upper coupled with the necessary magazines. Simple swap of the upper, change the magazine and presto! you've got a hunting gun.

Great Ideas so far! Just a little background. This will be the first AR that I will have owned, however, I have probably shot a couple thousand rounds through a Colt AR15A2 throughout the years at work.

Colt 6920. If they really follow through with the rumors and go to .155" dia. trigger and hammer pins, then that will eliminate the last only reason not to buy a 6920.

You sound like a good candidate for the 6.8spc. ar15performance (W) and Titan Armory (E) are taking orders for a 5R rifling barrelled upper for $650 starting 2/23.

It may be silly, but if they ever go with a .155" pin diameter LE6921 factory SBR I will buy one and call it a day.

So I must remove my name from the POF wait list. I thought I could do it, but July is too far away! So I decided that I would in fact pick up something in the .223 calibre. I went to Rainier Arms and hit the "Notify Me Please" button on the LMT CQB 16", the LMT Piston, and both Noveske's. Well it didn't take long. I got home tonight from work, and got an email telling me that the CQB came in. It didn't take a minute for me to log in and snatch it up! They must've just had one in because it has gone from "Add Me" to "Notify Me" again! I'm so stoked.... Any suggestions on pieces that should be upgraded? Thanks for all of the responses,

Mike

PS with the difference in price from the POF 308, I can also purchase a Rem 700!

Put an Aimpoint on it (let your budget dictate which one) and a two-point sling (again let your budget dictate which one if it's a BFG Vickers, Viking, or Boonie Packer) and shoot the snot out of it. You may find that you like it just fine the way it is, and save yourself a ton of money.

Personally, the only other objection I'd have to it is the A2 pistol grip and I'd put a Magpul MOE grip on it.

I had my girlfriend buy me a rifle bag for Valentines Day, and I'm having her pick me up a sling for my birthday! lol.... I am so Romantic! I have the FUG from LaRue, and a LaRue (Harris) Bipod w/quick detach.

Thanks for the suggestions
