This may sound pretty stupid, however i am going to ask it anyways to settle a bet. Many people have used krylon to paint rifles and such. Someone suggested to me that it was a good alternative to paint a handgun as well, rather than use something more expensive like duracoat. I however didnt agree but was curious as to what some of you guys would think about it. Or if any of you were cheap enough and brave enough to do it yourselves, what your experiences may have been. I would venture to think that if my friend thought about doing it, he probably isnt the only one in the world, as most of us think alike. Thanks for your help.

I would think you'd wear a lot of it off due to holster contact.

I have indeed used Krylon on rifles. It is quite soft and wears off pretty easily.

Dura Coat, KG GunKote, Norrells Moly resin, and similar products are usually an epoxy like finish that harden and bond to the mettal and use heat or time to achieve a full cure. They have a higher surface hardness as well that resists abrasion.

Lets see how good Krylon looks after this type of treatment.

The best part about krylon is it is easy to re-apply when necessary. All spray painted firearms need touch ups.

This Glock 17 I Krylon'ed tan just for kicks. I used Krylon Fusion. Properly de-greased before application. The gun was reassembled 24 hours after painting, then I placed my X200 on it a couple of times. The pictures are small, but you can see the wear on the rails. I also ran it through some dryfire drills and it was thinning at the slide serrations, and on the grip.

During the first range session (500 to 600 rounds, lots of drawing and mag changes) the paint came off the frame on onto my hands making it very sticky. I wish I would have taken pictures of the gun after that range session.

After that range session I stripped the paint off, as it was on my clothes from carrying IWB, and I didn't like that it made it so sticky.

On the other hand I have had great luck with Duracoat. I did a Makarov that still looks great (no pictures as sold it after coating, but the owner recently told me that it has held up and looks like the day I coated it, and it spends most of its time in a vehicle center console or a holster.) I have also Duracoated multiple small parts, such as a Savage bolt handle and Beretta slide stop, and they show no wear.
