The FSB jig prototype lives. This is one I have been thinking about for a long time and finally got it into CAD and had one made. I already have a few changes I want to make but nothing major. It may work with clamp on sights as well, depends on if the 5/16" key stock would fit.

Barrel started out as a RRA heavy with no FSB. I had it turned down to 0.800" under the handguards and did the F marked FSB install pictured below.

That is very slick. do you power ream 2/0 after drilling. I use a simular rig made from white oak but keys from receiver instead barrel pin, very cool. I'm starting work in the morning on new one, hope you don't mind as they say it's a compliment.

I wish I had a big mill so I could make them myself. I have to sub most of this stuff out to shops that have the equipment. My mini mill could probably do these, I'll probably try to do one one of these days.

I do power ream with the mini mill at a low speed and lube. I do the final fitting by hand though.

Here is some constructive advice to improve your set up.

That square bar which goes between the block and FSB post hole should be atleast twice as thick so there is no chance of it flexing.

You also need to devise some type of spacer to put under the square bar to compensate for a 0.040" difference in a F marked FSB so your jig can be used for both FSBs.

-OR-

I would mill down one side the square bar and have it be flippable to compensate for a F marked FSB.

For hobby use, why can’t you just tap a set screw on the bottom hole and use the barrel dimpler jig? I figure it would work just as well as any low profile gas block with a bottom set screw set up.

I thought that too but found that the hole isn't in always in the same location or the right location for that matter.

I was thinking about the opportunity for flex too. That's an awful long span to control flex. I would also be concerned about the clamping method slipping. Not knocking your setup, it is FAR above most home garage setups (ie hand drill and a coors light) but that would be my concerns from having some machinist background.

Not sure I see how you guaranteed that the barrel was perfectly parallel with the table/vise and perpendicular to the axis of the end mill/quill. Nothing is referenced off or to the fixture. Looks like the barrel could be easily rotated in the vise unless you spent a lot of time indicating it in.

That's not the point of the jig. But if I had more table you could use the jig to set up. The point of the jig is to align the FSB. Sure the key stock can flex a little but when it's bolted down to the FSB it gets more rigid.
I don't think the drilling will move it but you can set screw the FSB to prevent rotation. The reason for the 5/16 keystock is that's what fits the FSB, its cheap and cheap to machine.

I just squared the barrel to the drill and lined up with the FSB by eye. No magic here. Theres a few ways to do this set up.

Thanks for the comments.

FWIW -- I'm no machinist -- I think the beefed up version is much better.

It has no side to side movement which is what you want. The original with just the key stock worked fine but you needed to be careful. This one is not going to move.

If these go into production, they will look much better then my "machining".

I may have the top plate waterjet cut to reduce machining costs as well. Onward!

Any chance of these becoming available?

I hope so. I'm hoping I can work something out with Rainier. Otherwise I'll have to come up with something else. The issue is cost. To make just a few of them isn't very cost effective but with a small demand its probably not going to be worth running a whole bunch of them.

Cost wise I'm hoping they can retail around $125 but thats yet to be determined.

Once they are a go I will update the post.

Thanks for the interest.

gas block pin jig (http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=1398)

I searched and read a bunch of threads here and this jig is what I need. I bought a stripped bbl a gas tube and taper pins. I had everything else to build my upper. Or so I thought. The only other upper I assembled was one with a bbl that came with a fsb. I did not realize the fsb needed to be drilled for the pins while it was on the bbl. I have a used one and it was already drilled soooo I thought I was good to go. l realized what Dumb mistake I made when I went to put the taper pins in!

So I have a semi used bbl that will not work in my A1 upper with out another $120-130 in work and shipping. I should have bought the complete flat top upper and stripped it for the parts and lived with the F height fsb. Now I need to decide what to do. Fix the bbl, keep it for a later project with a low gas block or sell it at a loss. This was a little bit of life's tuition.

Can you tap the fsb and then mount it to the barrel with screws of some type?
IIRC some of the target guys used to do that so they could shift the front sight a bit.

Ya beat me to it. I thought the fsb from Fulton Armory would work but BKB and BCM both suggested it was not goof for a fighting gun. I respect their advice.

I gotta say the upper on the front of the BCM catalog has been calling to me. I think sucking it up and droping another C note is what I need to do!

The last post was 9 years ago, the maker hasn't posted since 2015, I think you need to call BCM in order to find out.

BRD isstill has them on their page, maybe call them also:
