View Full Version : Questions on cutting down barrel

I've been tossing around the idea of changing out the barrel on my LMT from a 16" to a 14.5". Someone suggested that instead of buying a new barrel and try to sell the old one, why not just cut it down. The thought of cutting a barrel down honestly makes me cringe. I don't know why other than I probably suffer from a misconception that accuracy may be adversely affected and the chrome-lining would be damaged at the cut.

So my questions are:

1) Are there any negatives to cutting down a barrel, and
2) Would I better off just buying a new barrel and selling the old one.

Personally I would just buy a whole new upper...just another excuse to build up a new carbine :D

However, Steve @ ADCO would be the only one I would trust to cut a barrel down. He's probably done thousands of them and I have not heard of a single complaint.

I'd probably just try to sell my 16" and buy a 14.5". Not because of I'm afraid of cutting, but because if I'm going to spend money on the barrel I might as well be getting a fresh start on a new barrel.

Otherwise, ADCO or Randall at AR15barrels.

Can you cut down a chrome lined barrel without messing up the chrome?

YEP!

Randall at www.ar15barrels.com does excellent work. I've used him to cut down three of my personal barrels and his work is second to none. He is also very fast. I sent him my 14.5" LMT chrome lined 1x7 twist barrel(from my registered SBR) a week and a half ago and got it back today. I had him open the gas port and cut to 10.3"and recrown. This is what it looks like now. His prices also cannot be beat. Randall is the barrel MASTER!

I did have to cutoff my bayonet lug to get the older AAC M4-2000 mount to work. I think it looks damn good.

gotm4 is there any reason you chose to blue the barrel instead of parkerize it? Is it just cost or is there an advantage to bluing?

It's not blued it's just wet with CLP and the pic taken indoors against a baby blue blanket. I added some pics taken outdoors to show the real color.

Well, you've just saved me a lot of money and consternation over this.
