REASON FOR POSTING THIS POLL:

I've read anti-gunners argue that the pre-election/post-election run-up in EBR sales has been mainly due to REPEAT BUYERS. This may be the case, but based on the people I know, there are many FIRST-TIME BUYERS since 2008.

I had a MAK-90 and an SKS many years ago.I hated both and sold them within a few weeks IIRC.

I had always been far more interested in handguns.

I really caught the BRD in mid-late 07 when i got my LMT.Much of my justification was the upcoming elections...an excuse thats been beat to death since.:D

Late 70's IIRC. Yeah, that long ago. Colt Sporter AR-15. Been through a few since including a couple of M16's. Currently have a KAC SR15 E3 IWS, Colt LE6933HB (SAW modified), 2 CNC AR45SD (pre-election), a Denny's Guns/Global Tactical Ion Bonded upper/lower (CMT) (post election) and looking at a LMT 12.5 gas piston from Grant or a Colt LE6940 (definitely post election).

1993, Colt Sporter A2, no bayonet lug. Before that, it was a Ruger Mini-14, folding stock ( remember the A-Team?), purchased in 1984, which was traded for the Sporter.

My first was in 2007 as I finally decided I wanted one. I then bought a lower and a LPK just to have one. After the election I bought the upper, butt stock and put it together. I have a Romanian G kit, receiver and compliance parts in my garage and one day I will have it put together for me.

I'm guessing that first time AR buyers are less likely to be members here (yet), so that option might be underrepresented.

For example, while I bought my first AR during the first ban, I've convinced at least three people to buy their first AR in the last few months. They aren't members here, but I'll try to rectify that, too.

I had been meaning to get one for a while, but never really got around to it. In 2008 I saw the winds of change a-coming and got ready, but plans fell thru mid summer and had to use the fundage elsewhere.

Got a stripped lower right after the election before prices went berserk, and right after the initial run on guns. Which in retrospect was a good thing I think, because I likely would have ended up with DPMS, RRA or some other questionable quality gun, since I didn't know what I didn't know, and my advice was coming from a friend who build his gun from a del-ton kit and fiercely argues it is 'just as good as' a Colt...

In Jan 09 I saw the Daniel Defense rifle coming out, and at a reasonable price, so I got one as well.

I started looking for one the day after election day. When I found one at a local gun shop, I called my wife to tell her I was going after work to buy it. The dear girl left work at lunch time, bought it, told the owner the story and concocted a devious plan, where I would show up after work, have to order 1, because the last was sold to a woman on her lunch break, and given a delivery date of January 17th. Christmas day, she gave me a Bushmaster M-4. If I had it to do all over again, I'd Marry her in a heartbeat.

Right after the WTC incident I was in the shop 9-13-01 ordering a RRA LAR A3 with 16" bbl mid length gas system aluminum FF tube w/top-railed gas block (at the time cutting edge-LOL) and fixed stock.
I had a Pre-Ban Bushmaster A2-CAR in the mid-90's, which I bought from a fellow w/dubious character. I had no real interest in AR's always been a pistol type but I knew I could sell it and I did. I wont even mention what I sold it for nor what I paid.
Saw the buyer not long ago he sez she still runs been through most parts but she still goes bang.
I wish I had known then some of what I know now.

Springtime of '08. I am a first-time buyer, and I did it because of the election.

I wasn't interested at all in ARs because of all the old bad words about the platform... Mattel gun, weak round, ineffective, et cetera, but after owning and then selling every major type of 7.62 rifle made, and realizing that all those gun shows must be full of AR accessories for some good reason, I put together a mid-length and have been happy since.

I expedited the purchase and assembly because as far as I'm concerned, the election was lost for the Republican candidate after Katrina. Technically I put the gun together before the election, but I put one eye on Obama and figured I had to get an AR before the election.

I bought my first, an HK93, in 1975. I had to keep it out of sight as most people didn't own such "ammo wasters" back then. People would actually pack up and leave the range if I made the mistake of bringing it out. Oh, well it was more fun shooting it in the back country anyway.

I bought my Charles Daly M4 at Knob Creek here in KY just a few weeks before the election. June of 2008, I was meaning to get one all along and glad I did before the frenzy we have now. Most places had ARs in stock and the prices were reasonable. Got mine for $899 (on sale from Cabela's) and a 50 buck rebate from S&W. Glad I did when I did as I didn't really see this coming and probably wouldn't have my EBR now if I had waited.

Back in 1993, late Fall, I wanted a "military style" rifle but I did not want to spend $600+ on a gun. I was more into computers etc at the time. I bought a NMH91 in 223 (basically a Mak-90 -thumbhole and everything).

A month later, a guy at work came into my office and told me that the Senate had passed their side of the AWB. This was Nov 93. That day at lunch a bunch of us drove down to the local EBR type store (also a pawn shop and std gun shop -- called Van Wagenens) and I bought a lightly used Colt 6700 Copmetition HBAR. Price was around $675. Jan 93 I bought an Essential Arms lower which I still have (the Colt is long gone). And later in 94 after the House passed their side of the AWB (but before it took effect in Sept 94). I bought 2 Eagle Arms lowers (one I still have) and two carbine uppers, don't remember by whom they were made. I still have one of the lowers though the upper has changed and the other I sold to buy a Rem 700 308 VSF (blued version of the Varmint 308 circa 95).

It has been downhill since then. Bubba Clinton's fault.

I bought my first SKS in the '90-'92 time frame. I was too poor for anything "cool" like a Mini-14, much less an AR. Move forward a decade or so and I find out that AR's are kind of like PCs, it's supposed to be easy to build your own and "you can save money".

I bought my first AR lowers in 2007 after thinking about it for a couple years or more. Bought a well-used, no-name, upper the same year and started waiting for the next run of BCM uppers.

Thanks to everyone who helped me answer questions through the site and PM's

During the pre-election campaign I had heard that another AWB would be in the works if “He who shall not be named” was elected. After the results of the elections in Nov. I decided that it was time, I wanted to get myself an AR-15 type rifle. Being from NJ, there are alot of restrictions on what I was able to buy or have shipped to my FFL. I wanted a "classic" looking AR-15 type of rifle. Complete rifles were already hard to find that were "NJ legal". Thinking that to build one would take too long, and time was of the essence, I continued to look for a complete build that was legal. (My initial thought was that I would buy it and store it just in case a ridiculously low probability of a "Red Dawn" type of situation occurred.) I hadn't fired or cleaned an M16 for at least 26 years. Never thought I’d ever want to see a white glove going through the chamber again. But my second amendment rights were being threatened.

I finally stumbled upon a S & W MP15ORC and bought it. I added an EOTech 556 with GG+G BUIS and changed out the handguard to a Magpul MOE. After I got it set up, I figured I'd just put a few rounds through it (250) just to make sure it worked. BIG MISTAKE!!! I tasted the koolaid and it was good!!! Storing it away was no longer an option. As a matter of fact I started casually looking around at other AR-15 type of rifles.

Then I found a LWRC M6A2. I did some homework and decided I had to have one of these just in case a ridiculously low probability of a "Red Dawn" type of situation occurred and I might need a backup rifle. I added a Troy BUIS, a CQD vertical grip, and EOTech 557 with a 4x magnifier kit (since I'm getting older and my eyes can barely see the target at 50 yrds), and a Timney trigger:

But I still didn't have a "classic AR-15 type rifle". Subconsciously I must have still been looking because along came a Colt 6700 Match Target HBAR Competition (20" barrel). What if I needed a backup to my backup just in case a ridiculously low probability of a "Red Dawn" type of situation occurred? Can't get more classic than a Colt, thus:

My new additions to my safe:

Count me as one of the "post-election noobs," but not necessarily because of the fervor. I always knew I'd get one, but it wasn't a priority until I saw prices going up big time on Bushys and DPMS fare. Good thing for me I have a great friend who wouldn't let a friend buy junk, so I ended up with an LMT.

But every time I go into a store, I see at least two people in there asking about which AR he/she should get, and whether or not there is REALLY a difference between a DPMS and a Colt.

I should add that to me (my opinion, keep in mind) the question OP asks isn't quite so pertinent here at M4C. I say this because after being a member of the gun community for a few years, and having been on many other forums, a lot more of the frequent posters here seem to be more knowledgeable, experienced shooters, and thus wouldn't really submit to the fever of an election like the recent one. There seems to be a deep, and highly informed community here, versus some of the people that frequent the other, more popular gun sites. Just my .02. YMMV. But I will say this: If this question were asked over at TOS, the response would be VASTLY different.

Same here. I've successfully encouraged a few people to get a good rifle while they're available. I'm taking two more people out to the range tomorrow to teach them about their newly acquired EBRs and how to sight the guns using the 50/200 method. At the moment they know nothing about ballistics, bullet drop, cleaning and maintenance, etc. I plan to fix all that! ;)

I believe it was 1988 or 89, around the time they first started talking about an "Assault weapon ban," I guess in response to the Purdey schoolyard shooting.

Until that time, I guess I was a supporter of "common sense" gun control. I came from a family of sportsmen and was used to having shotguns around. As a young person, I had yet to give the issue much thought.

But listening to the arguments from both sides concerning the need to ban "assault weapons" convinced me of the total vacancy of gun control arguments.

Feb, '88--a AR15-A2. It was an early one with a no fence lower and no assist upper with drum sights. Still have it, ...er, I still have all the parts. I have five AR's and four of them are mix and match parts guns. M4gery, A2 configuration, A1 configuration, A1 ban configuration (my wife loves this one. It has a muzzle break, therefore virtually no muzzle flip.), and a true factory rifle--a RRA LAR-458. Love that SOCOM.

Now comes the best part. I attended a Friends of the NRA dinner about three weeks ago and won an M4 carbine! It's been ordered for me, but who knows when I'll get it. Hopefully before any new AWB! By the way, it is a Olympic Arms rifle, so that might mitigate any envy some of you might have felt.;)

I brought my brother over to the "dark side" by helping him build an EBR a couple of months ago. Now one of the officers of the small company I work for is asking about AR's. Seems his desire for one hit a peak about the time they started sporting $2000 price tags. I've told him he has first dibs on the rifle I won. If he goes for it, I will have infected another with BRD.
