Thinking of taking the plunge at some point down the road and doing the whole kit deal just to have a project. This list is hearsay and my guess a little old and incomplete.

Do you feel there is any real differences in the quality of how a lower is produced??
What is the benefit of billet??

I understand opinions may vary. Feel free to correct and update. I honestly had no idea there were so many.

I think S&W makes their own now. You also forgot about Colt, which is made by Colt, NOT CMT.

I think you might be wrong on that one.. Colt nor S&W manufacture their own lowers or uppers.

you left off Hesse, Vulcan, and Blackthorne:p:D
choosing a lower almost comes down to whos name or style of rollmark you want on your rifle.
personally, i think the whole "billet" thing is a little over rated, beyond not needing a raw forging to start with. i don't really see a functional benefit. billet does look nice, though. i would like to see some billet stainless steel uppers and lowers made, that would be a neat way to advance the AR platform, i think

Also 4got les baer which I own:o Not sure where they come from.

Would love to see how they are made...especially the billet. Being in the mfg industry I am amazed at mass production of the various industries.

I guess my main point is if you had to choose, would it really make a difference what flavor was on the side if starting from scratch.

I agree stlyns...not sure it makes any difference but like top shelf ideas.
