View Full Version : Why the hell do I want a .38 Super? -- PICS

TOrrock

Why??

Why would I want to add another caliber to my line up, why would I want to add another magazine system?

Why would I want to get something that a 9mm +P could do just about as well?

Why dammit, why?

'Cause I think I want one.....:o

I owned a .38 Super Series 70 Colt 1911 many years ago and I have to say that I love this little cartridge. I bought it originally with intent to turn it into a Race Gun but ended up instead using it as a small game hunting pistol. Numerous Squirrels, Rabbits and Racoons fell to this pistol. I shot three red foxes with it over 5-years and two coyotes. Remington +P cases, Remington 7 1/2 SRBR Primers, 9.5 grains of Hercules Bluedot behind a Hornady 140 grain XTP Hollow point was a superb combination in my old pistol.
But one and you wont be disappointed.

Local shop has a Colt Commercial Gov't Model in .38 Super with 2 mags.....it's seen some use, and they want too much.

But it's a Commercial model........:o

A competent smith can throat the barrel to handle both 38Super and 9x23.
Most 38Super loadings are a bit anemic but the WW factory 9x23 124gr JSP gets 1500fps from a 5" barrel!
Does really ugly damage to large jackrabbits. REALLY ugly!

Now were talkin "PIMP" guns. Hey there you go, a "Pimp" pic thread, some one can start it in another thread. Or start one called "PIMP MY GUN". I don't have any to start one or it might happen. Art work is good to see though. When I was a lot younger I thought about getting into "Gun Engraving", just never did.

Find someone to let you shoot a properly compensated .38 Super, and you'll immediately know why you have to have one. Put a red dot on it and it's like cheating.

Thing is, I'd keep it pretty classic.....no comps, no red dots, not a race gun.

I'll swing by tomorrow and see if the shop still has it.

I've found that number 4 doesn't really work with the wife too well.

The secret to this is:
1. never let the wife know exactly how many guns you have.
2. when you add a new gun to the collection, never put the box in the trash or anywhere else she can find it.

That way, if she sees you with new gun you can say, "This old thing? I've had it for years, I just don't shoot it very often." :D

I've halfway thought of getting some kind of race-ish 1911, just for schitzngiggles. GT has had a stainless 9 mm in their case for months/couple-years. Also overpriced though.

I agree about the Pachmayrs. Would be cool to get some worn walnut on there, like an old set from a gun show or something.

Enjoy the new/old blaster, and post some range pics once you get her out.

You could shoot IDPA in ESP division with it. Although more and more people are shooting ESP, yours would definitely present a unique approach.

Although more and more people are shooting ESP, yours would definitely present a unique approach.

Which is ironic, since the .38 Super 1911 was considered the "race' gun of IDPA back in the early days before the sport got pwned (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwn) by traditional double action and then striker fired pistols.

"Super Face" Anyone remember that term?

Was that from the 38 super throwing the brass back into the shooter's face?

Negative. "Super Face" occurred when your pistol blew up because you tried to make IPSC Major with a non-ramped (unsupported) barrel. The original kB!, so to speak.

Nothing wrong with a 38 super, while you wouldn't want to butcher that one like the one I carried, they do make good carry guns with ramped barrels. When I was competitive in USPSA I had a "race" gun and a Springfield Armory for carry. The Springfield wore Heinie sights, Ed Brown beavertail grip safety & hammer, Videki trigger and I checkered the front strap and beveled the mag well.

Loads I was shooting crono-ed at 1450 fps with the only change between the loads for it and the race gun where that the carry loads where JHP rather than JTC. I didn't even have to readjust the dies on my press, the OAL length was correct for both.

Just don't shoot somebodies IPSC/USPSA loads in yours. Accuracy won't be as good as modern barrels either due to the way they where headspaced.

The 38 Super is a really neat cartridge, esp if you handload.
You can load anywhere from near 380 levels to near 357 mag performance!
As to not "carrying one" for practical purposes the first 2 dozen Thompsons the FBI ordered were in 38 Super as were many of their 1911's. The Thompsoins to stop a Ford , the 1911's would pierce the body armor of the day!

Super face is not akin to a 40 kaboom.....when we started hot rodding the Super it would blow, but not in the way you think, the base would seperate and brass shavings would come back into the shooters face via the firing pin channel!! Small shavings that hurt like you know what.

Doug Koenig shoots a S&W 1911 from the performance Center in his single stack matches, or at least he did. It's named after him , model 38DK.

Enjoy your classic!

LHS

I knew they made an experimental model in .30 Carbine for military trials, but I wasn't aware they made any Super Thompsons.

Are the plastic grips more period-authentic? Better than the Pachmayrs, but I still like the double-diamond walnut best.

The research I've done says that the first Commercial models that Colt put out post War, '46/'47, came with left over G.I. grips that Colt had. After they were used up, Colt started putting plastic grips of their own design on the post War Commercials.

I beg to differ.

.41 Magnum is bad ass, especially when using 210 gr. soft points. Of course, #410459 - the 220 gr. Keith boolit is a thing of beauty. I'm not so sure I have the balls to load his recommended 20.0gr. of 2400 in that though.

And of course .38 Super is equally bad ass, being the first true "high velocity" police load that could penetrate cars. I am drooling over Templar's .38 Super. I will find one someday for myself.

If you're a history buff and an LEO/military history freak you find such calibers very alluring.
