Seems a lot of folks post here asking about grip work on Glocks and M&P's. I thought I'd take a minute to share my own experience here. My review may seem critical; however, it is made to give those considering grip work some stuff to think about. Please remember it is my opinion.

I carried a Glock 21 for two and a half years before switching to a customized Kimber 1911 this last November. I loved the gun. It was light, held fourteen rounds of 45 ACP and was extermely soft shooting. I put somewhere around 4,500 rounds through the gun in the 30 months I carried the gun on-duty and had ZERO malfunctions. Not one.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y156/KevH/P1010334.jpg

My only complaints about the gun were in regards to the thickness of the grip and slide. I found carrying the gun IWB to be a pain and impractical due to the slide thickness. I couldn't change that. I found the grip underneath the triggerguard to rub against my hand excessively, okay I can probably get that fixed. I also found that when my hands were wet with sweat or in the rain I had trouble maintaining my grip on the gun. I think I can change that to. The third thing was the sights. The Trijicon front sight had gotten that nice yellow dark hue so that it no longer stood out to me. Sights are easy to fix.

So once the gun was no longer my duty gun, I decided I'd look to have my complaints fixed. I was impressed with pictures I had seen online of our Gentle Ben's handiwork. I spoke with him back and forth via e-mail and sent the gun off to him to have his handiwork applied. While the gun was at his shop, I decided to order a set of Warren sights. The sights took a grand total of about 30 minutes to install. I got the frame back in one week. A fast turnaround for any gun work.

So here are the results and my thoughts.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y156/KevH/P1010293-1.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y156/KevH/P1010292-1.jpg

I like the stippling work. It looks good. It feels good. More importantly it works well with wet hands. I shot a class this last December in the rain and it worked exteremely well allowing me to maintain a nice tight grip with little shifting in the hand.

Also, I hear people complain about how grip mods tear up clothing. I carried this gun concealed during the month of December in a Tauris high-ride holster between a t-shirt and a sweatshirt or a t-shirt and a North Face fleece and it didn't tear up or bother anything.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y156/KevH/P1010287-1.jpg

Relief under trigger guard. I like it! It allows me get a higher grip and is reminiscent of a 1911 with high-grip work. My only complaint and criticiscm is that by removing some of the plastic it made it so that a Surefire DG switch is much more sensitive to a tight grip and I've experienced too many white light AD's. It was enough that I removed the DG switch. This is something to consider before having this kind of work done and something I wasn't aware of prior to doing it.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y156/KevH/P1010288-1.jpg

Notice the stippling under the grip tang. NOT A FAN! I used this gun in a training class where we put 400 rounds down the pipe in about three hours. Now if this gun was a 9mm I don't think it would be to big of a deal. But in a 45 ACP, that nice gentle push turns painful when the stippling work digs and chews into your hand. If I could place my order again I'd specify that I wanted the stippling work to end just underneath the finger indentations on either side of the frame.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y156/KevH/P1010290-1.jpg

Warren Sights. These are freakin awesome! I ordered a tritium front with a plain rear and I couldn't be happier. They are tall, easy to see and fast. Any Glock I buy from now on will have these.

So what are my thoughts on the whole process? What would you change and do over again? To be honest, I don't know if I would have had the grip work done. While it works well for many people I think I would have just left my gun alone.

I've now had the chance to shoot guns worked on by Ben, Robar, Bar-Sto and Bowie. I honestly like the stock Glock grip better than all of these FOR ME and that is what I intend to stick with from now on. THIS IS JUST FOR ME. If you think that a grip reduction or stippling is the thing for you then I highly recommend Ben and his work. His turnaround time was quick and he was great to deal with and did an excellent job.

Thanks for posting this review, Kaltblitz. I appreciate your objectivity. Due to your (and a few other people's) feedback, I've since changed the way I modify the tang area. I still texture it, but I smooth it off quite a bit so that it LOOKS textured, but doesn't FEEL as rough as the rest of the grip.

Here are a few pics that illustrate the change. I try to make it as subtle as possible, for aesthetic purposes.

If you'd like, I will upgrade the tang area as described, and will also re-detail the entire gun so that it looks more like my current work, e.g. more defined edge lines, better polish under the trigger guard. No charge charge for this "spa treatement." ;)

Those look great! Have you done any HKs?

Gentle Ben
07-08-09, 07:04
Yes, I've done several HKs. The grip material is thinner, so I can't remove as much. But the HK grips take a nice crisp texture, similar to the M&Ps. I lost most of my pics when my POS PC went T/U, but here's a USP and an M&P.

This M&P is the 10-8 Performance package, which is a collaboration between Hilton Yam and me. The grip work is done to Hilton's specs, and it includes a trigger job, 10-8 sights, and 10-8 low-profile aluminum mag baseplates.

I realize you've said you wont be accepting "new work" till you're ready/FFL arrives - but  @ that beauty!

When I move to Texas either this month or next and get setup with the Sheriffs Office, I think I want this package. It looks very functional and attractive.

And what you previously stated on helping out the OP on retexturixing his setup? Talk about awesome CS! This has sold me on giving Boresight a chance....simply amazing work!

Ben, there is a question I've meant to ask a while ago, but never had a convenient moment.
I noticed that when you do Glock grip reduction with removal of finger grooves, you still leave a little bump at the site of top-most finger groove. This could be seen on the picture # 6. What's the reason behind it?

civilian
07-08-09, 13:03
I may have to try some grip tape under my trigger guard to see how that feels. I like the looks of the 10-8 package. Hadn't thought about any work to my M&P's other than changing the magazine base pads and getting some trigger work done, but Hilton's write-up has me thinking...

Gentle Ben
07-08-09, 13:54
YVK, that minimal protrusion is the bottom of the retention pocket I cut below the trigger guard. I do that so you can firmly encircle the grip with your thumb and social finger, and that slight shelf is essentially a "stop" to keep your finger from slipping. Also, when I remove the finger grooves I reinforce the frontstrap so it doesn't flex, which gives me some material to work with at the top of the front strap, so I used it to make that retention shelf.

TX Hopeful, thanks and good luck with your LE move. Guns are self-conscious, and like to look their best. Just like a freshly washed/waxed car drives better, a freshly pimped gun shoots better. :D

Also, I don't just refurbish my own work. I also redo jobs done by other shops, or DIY jobs that went badly (I charge for those, though). Here's a rework I did not long ago.

This M&P is the unofficial Chris Costa package. For trivia's sake, it's been independently proven that my texturing has a hardness and abrasiveness rating almost equivalent to Chris' beard. Some people like the non-slip surface my texturing provides, but I secretly like the mental image of having a firm grip on Costa's face when I shoot. :p

Alright, enough pics for now. I don't want to get a mod beatdown for promoting my biz without a license.

D'oh. If youre the DK I think you are, check out the photo of Costa's Glock. That has the beveartail shortened and the tang undercut, like we discussed.

Ben, thanks for explanation.

The "before-after" pictures: "before" gun is almost certainly done by David Bowie whose work is very well regarded. I am curious what are the functional differences, besides obvious type and extent of texturing. I do see that trigger guard is undercut, but I can't see any other differences.

Gentle Ben
07-08-09, 17:32
There was nothing wrong with the previous work on the gun; the client was a female with very small hands, and she wanted the gun to be even smaller.

Aside from the work beneath the trigger guard, I thinned the grip above where Bowie's texturing stopped, and undercut the beavertail. I also reduced the backstrap a bit further, and gave it a inward curve at the bottom. The net result of this was to allow her to grip higher on the gun, and put her finger a little closer to the trigger.

Because it would've looked strange if I did my work piecemeal and left the rest of the grip as-is, I redid the entire grip with my style of texturing and edge lines.

Ben does very good work. He has done four of my M&Ps. I prefer the super aggressive texture, but it will tear your hands apart by the end of the second day of a class. Ben also did two M&P CT Lasergrips for me. I was very hesitant to allow anyone to work on these since they have electronics in them, but after looking over Ben's work I gave him the go ahead and he did an excellent job.

Ben's work is top-notch. He did my M&P9 and I love it. I did not go with the super aggresive because of my sissy hands but it is still enough to stay put during shooting. If my pic-fu was better I would post some images but that is not the case. I would advise anyone who is hesitant to send him some work to go ahead and do it, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for all the inquiries and compliments.

Here's a unique G17 I did recently: a very early import with Euro proof marks. Note the original, almost crude-looking wraparound grip texture.

The client wanted an extreme reduction, finger grooves added to the grip, and the trigger guard rounded/polished. It was particularly fun to do this one because it was a challenge. The grip plastic was completely different from what Glock is currently using, and I found it to be very brittle and not easy to work with. Note the chip taken out of the grip, which is how I received it. I had to do extensive reinforcement of the magwell opening to guard against future failure.

"An anonymous Magpul source indicated that Chris Costa has taken a leave of absence from the company in order to pursue his dream of being a Victoria's Secret model. 'We wish Chris the best of luck,' stated the source. 'Everyone here kind of knew that the rigors of the job were taking their toll on him. We had to cancel a course in Key West because he broke a nail, and he refused to leave his trailer in Los Angeles because his beard stylist didn't show up. The guy can't go anywhere without attracting a crowd of paparazzi, and a couple of months ago he had to shoot a deranged student in a carbine course who came at him with a knife. Turns out the guy was a member of Costa's Facebook fan club, and was trying to get a lock of his beard as a souvenir'."

After handling Steve's M&P in Arkansas a couple of weeks ago and looking at this thread several times since then I'm thinking when my new M&P .45 arrives it might just take a trip.

thanks for the kind words & pics. Those photos really show the two-tone contrast of the dark grip area against the rest of the frame.

Ben, you wouldn't happen to have a side by side photo of the A and B packages on a Glock would you?

I did at one time. Lost a lot of pics when my POS Dell went T/U. Let me look and see if I have something. For starters, here are pics of a stock G17 vs. a G17 with Extreme Redux & Glove Bevel:

I'm getting antsy for my G19 to return from Ben and had to do some searches for pics to hold me over. I've looked at the ones on his website a million times. I am sitting at 7 weeks today from when Ben confirmed receipt of my frame. I can't wait.

Anyone know the current approximate turnaround time?

Debating between a boresight job to a g19 and getting an m&p9c.

Gentle Ben

We are currently not accepting new polymer work due to a significant backlog. I anticipate opening back up in late Aug, and I'm hoping the turnaround time will be 2-3 months (vs. 5 months when we stopped accepting new work).

I *ALMOST* felt bad sending a bunch of stuff to Ben. Again almost...I have a feeling mine will be still a few more months out. But I know with Ben it'll be well worth the wait.

I have two M&P40's, a FS 9, and a 9c all waiting for Ben to accept new work. The 40's are my new duty weapons.

Although I might make one of the 40's a test bed for my own stippling pattern I've been working on after about 50 Pmags. I'm just impatient as hell. Ben will still get the FS 9 for sure.

I'm hoping to get the call anyday on a G17 being ready. I'm headed to a 3 day Awerbuck pistol/carbine class next week and would love to have it in time for that.
