Does anyone have a good price on the SureFire 1911 Rail adapter? I plan on getting one in a month or so and SFs retail is like $160 and most others price is the same. I thought I saw someone awhile back that had them for $103 or $130

Are you dead set on the surefile rail?

No, any other adapter thats quality would work, or be considered anyway.

Thats just the only option I was aware of for a non railed 1911

I am pretty damn happy with my Dawson Rail. It is smaller than a normal light rail so you can use many holsters for a normal 1911. It does however require you to use only Surefire X series lights with their proprietary adapter.

+1 on the Dawson Rail.
Simple, robust, well thought out, Dave's good people.

How does the dawson rail attach to the gun?

You have to drill 3 holes in the dustcover to attach the Dawson

That's what it looked like. Thanks.

However I now have a Novak rail - it fits the same height as a normal railed frame gun. The Dawson while slick - does require a different holster, as it sits lower.

Kevin,
Are you saying that you replaced a Dawson rail with a Novak? Same hole pattern? Thanks!

Sorry I replaced two 1911's that had Dawsons.

I have a Dawson and Novak rail at home, I will check it out.

KevinB,

You wouldn't happen to have a Beretta 92 at the house would you? I'd be interested in how that Novak rail sits on the 92's dust cover. The Brownells rail says it works on both, but is higher and over all not to my liking. Any how might end up with it on both my 1911 and 92 if the contor is right.

I got rid of my Berretta in 93 :D

I'll see if I can find a Berretta at work next week to take a pic on.

If you mount a rail to an aluminum frame you need to make sure you either 1) know what you are doing or 2) have a gunsmith who is qualified mount it. Aluminum will give under heavy use in regards to the screws. Dawson Precision has discontinued their rail for the Beretta and SIG non-rail frames for this very reason.

yeah, I should most likely leave it as is and get in on the M&P-9's from Todd and Grant. Just hate to add another pistol to the line.... Suppose it will just need to stay as is. My 1911 on the other hand needs to end up with the rail.

So I'm going to purchase a Novak rail to mount to my 1911 and am looking for the pros and cons of the aluminium and the steel versions.

Stainless frame, 5" barrel

Will the weight savings of .8 of an ounce on a steel 5" be that noticeable.

Dissimilar metals expanding at different rates causing problems?

Thank you all, nick

I had the Novak and have had a bunch of guns with the Dawson. I prefer the Dawson. I got my last one installed and shipped for about $130 in just about a week total turnaround by Springfield Custom shop. Chuck Rogers used to do mine but Chuck is a very busy guy these days. My workgun has the Dawson. Getting holsters Duty and otherwise has never been too tough at all.

I would recommend you send your stripped frame to Dawson. The install is reasonably priced, they did a bang up job, and they had my frame back to me in about 3 weeks.

Kevin,

Can you use the Surefire DG switch with the Novak rail without bending the switch, on my Dawson railed gun I have to bend the switch and they don’t last long after I bend them.

Thanks,

I honestly don't know.

The Novak on my Nighthawk LAV gun hangs down as much as a Dawson so I tend to think so but no guarantees.

I can’t remember if the railed frame holds the lights lower, or higher. Maybe some at Surefire will know.

Thanks Kevin.

Can anyone recommend a good gunsmith for this sort of work? I am looking at having the Brownells rail put on a Beretta 92.

For holsters, I am currently using the Safariland 3285.

http://www.safariland.com/DutyGear/product.aspx?pid=3285

It allows you to use just about any light/laser. The problem with most holsters is they are molded for a single type of light. If you change your favorite tac light you have to buy a new holster.

How solid of a mount is this? My concern being how little material there is on the dust cover.

thanks

Will a surefire DG switch still sit flush and work properly with a Dawson or Novak rail?
