My 18 month old Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Decoy, and our 8 1/2 week old Collie/Shepherd/Chow mix rescue, Marzipan, the night we brought her home. We were pretty sure they were going to get along when this happened. Decoy is a fantastic guard dog.

Yep, they always generally have a head the size of a cement block. Good dogs, very protective.

Maximus? Well I figure since the breed originates from the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain. I would name my dog Maximus, like the character in Gladiator because he was from Spain as well.

He's vocal enough to kick alerts that wake me up, but not the toughest little fella in the world. This is the result of a scuffle Archie had with a canary. You should see the canary.

Kidding. A buddy and I take care of each others dogs whenever one of us is traveling. This is the result of a JRT (12 lb) vs a Choco Lab (85 lb) wrestling match on a tile floor. It turned my free dog into a $2500 dog instantly. You wouldn't think 3 pins the size of 6d trim nails would cost that much.

Here are a few of ours, the brindle black mouth cur mix and the Airedale Terrier both are hunting machines. Fearless and totally obedient, both will grab a hog or kill a coyote(especially if the yote screws up and tries to circle back on them:D). They will hold a hog by a rear leg and snout and unless it is a 200 plus pounder they will win every time. They won't chase deer(unless told to) the Airedale will retrieve down game as good as they come. Both are totally socialized to people and other dogs and cats. They will not behave aggressively unless instructed to do so. Another really great thing is, if myself or my wife pick up a gun, be it hand or long gun they will both take up positions one on each side waiting for commands.

We have a German Shorthaired Pointer and a Miniature Pinscher. The Min Pin is always on watch and is a barker, sometimes to the point of annoying.

We were out at a shooting range with her when she was a pup and I tied her to an old log. She dragged it over to where my son was shooting his .22 and laid down to watch. Do they make eye and ear protection for dogs? ;)

seriously, he's the best dog i ever had. my son was in the job corps in 2006. i had just blown out my knee bad. my boy calls me and asks if we can take a dog. somebody dropped off some puppies and there was one left. he got caught in a door and broke his leg. the full grown dogs at the job corps site were getting pretty mean and chewing him up. the staff was going to take him out in the field and shoot him if somebody didn't take him, cold weather was setting in and the broken leg thing didn't help.

i told my boy no. i'm on crutches for months. i can barely take care of myself. when we went to pick my son up for a weekend visit he brought this little white puppy with bleeding bite marks and a swollen leg up to out suv. i felt sorry for the little guy and told my son we could take him to the humane society but, we still couldn't keep him. by the time we got home the dog was going nowhere. he has been my best buddy ever since. i found a way to house train him and raise him while on crutches for a few months. he actually made the time go by faster.

He's the laziest, best, most loving dog. I've had 4 labs and this one is something else! He is a ham... an attention whore! Great with my children, he has pretty much attached himself to my 3 yr old in the picture. They follow each other around the house and yard.

Here are Vic303 and I's two mutts.

Charlie is a mix of Rhodesian Ridgeback and Chow.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a64/dave5339/IMG_0935.jpg

Cody is we think a mix of Rhodesian Ridgeback and Pitt, either that or he is a all Ridgie and a colored like one of the original African Ridgebacks.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a64/dave5339/IMG_2664a.jpg

Both dogs are fantastic with the kids.

Charlie is the barker, if a leaf blows three blocks away, he lets us know about it. He's protective enough that when aircraft are on final to the DFW airport he makes sure to chase them out of the yard, no matter than they are at 10,000 feet or so.

Just picked up our 15 lb, 8 month old ankle biter from doggy daycare. When she walked into the living room she went nuts barking at everything that the contractor repairing a flooded ceiling had moved. She would not stop until my wife moved her toy box and the sofas back. She then went thru the house to make sure everything else was ok.

She barks at anything that is not where she thinks it belongs, don't leave your shoes anywhere but under the bed! She is a great guard dog, but no match for the coyotes in the park behind our condo.

I love the way that breed looks. How's the temperament?

Siberians are a bit different than your average lab. They generally show no emotion and aren't the type to run up and lick your face. Extremely intelligent with a strong hunting instinct. I feel they are best kept in pairs. The yard must be fenced in. Letting Siberians run freely in the neighborhood will result in feline genocide. Some siberians look fierce but the breed is not too good as watchdogs due to their love for humans. They don't see people in general as a threat. Mine will raise an alarm if anyone approaches the yard but they are not mean. Some of these dogs howl similar to the sound a wolf makes. This breed is extremely clean with no odor and well equipped to handle cold temperatures with a double coat. Expect heavy shedding in the summer.

Here is the bed love seat couch snack drawer guard, He is a 34 pounder as of last vet visit. If he jumps(yes he can actually jump) on you while sleeping you will definitely know he is there. Bottom photo is him and his liter mate brother who goes 18 lbs. Believe it or not the smaller one is the real bad ass.

Couldn't agree more. I feel like that for most of the strong willed working dogs, having a sibling really helps behavior, as long as you are stern w/both.

Let's hear more about your GSDs!

My pack of Shepherds is a fantastic bunch - 2 dudes and 4 bitches.

Roxie and River Vom Whirling Thunder (River is left most in group pic) just turned one. They are German line working dogs. River's is going into herding and agility, Roxie is going into Tracking and agility, both have started obedience and are beginning their dog sport.

Lola is 3 and has retired from bite work, but enjoys tracking and agility. She is not too good at herding - I think she likes mutton more than I do. She tolerates obedience training.

The older Shepherds have mostly retired from dog sport (they still do some Rally and advanced obedience), but remain solid guard dogs and great family companions.

One of the pack is actually a Dutch Shepherd (second from left in group pic). She has a more mellow personality, and looks upon us humans as her royal subjects and servants.

You should have seen the look on her face! She was stepping backwards and was quite unsure of what to make of him. His looks will stop a 7 year old in her tracks (and her old dad too!!!)

IMHO shepherds and pitts are to of the best guard/family dogs around. My grandfather had a shepherd for along time that I grew up with and I have two pitt crosses. Soon to be one were going to have to but one down soon b/c of cancer.:(

Another great guard animal is horses. I rember during the winter I was putting them in and they were watching some deer that I didn't even know was there. There morgans if you're wondering. Thy're crafty and can escape if you're not watching them.

This is my 13-year old along with a friends police K9 we were babysitting. (Mine is the one without the leash, she and Kenny the K9 get along very well.) We used to run 3 miles a day together, now a slow walk around the block knocks her out for the day. I frequently tease the wife because the dog has been with me longer than she has. I've had dogs most of my life, but she is the best by far. Very well behaved, mello, good with the kids, good with other dogs, good watchdog, uncanny intelligence. She's the first Shepard I've had, when she goes we're getting another Shepard.

I am on my second Chessie right now. Wouldn't have any other dog. I have seen two completely different TV shows, many months apart, about dogs rescuing/protecting humans. Both were about CBRs. The first was about a Chessie that had pulled a 4 or 5 year old out of a lake and dragged the boy to shore. The mother couldn't find the boy, was hysterical and called the police. The police went down to the lake but could only find the boy's soaking wet stocking hat on the dock. They looked around the shore area and came across the soaking wet dog lying beside the drenched boy. The boy survived and later explained that he had fallen off the dock and into the lake. Then, started to struggle because he couldn't swim and the Chessie tried to lift him out of the water by the hat, but of course the hat just came off. The dog then jumped into the water, grabbed the boy in his mouth and dragged him to shore.

The other show was about a man who lived in an apartment with his big Chessie. He went to night school and came home late one night. Somebody came up from behind him in the dark and stuck a gun in his back. The bad guy ordered him to open the door to his apartment. As soon as they walked in, the Chessie lunged towards the intruder grabbing him by the gun hand. This allowed the owner to get the jump on the bad guy and call the cops.

Chessies were bred by the market hunters of Chesapeake Bay to retrieve ducks and geese, up to 200 retrieves a day have been recorded. And this was in icey water! At night, Chessies were expected to guard the boats and gear. Hence their protective streak. They are NOT like Goldens and Labs! It is even recommended that first time dog owners not get a Chessie. Chessies will try to be the Alpha dog of the house.

I go to a couple of local dog parks several times a week. There are frequent fights among some of the dogs. Unfortunately, my dog runs TO the fight and tries to break it up. He's a Deadgrass similar to yours. My first one's name was Buster and the one I have now is Bart.

I saw something today that bothered me in light of the Luttrel incident in Texas.

A guy was coming out of the Giant and saw two punks waving their arms at his dog and goading it - it was tied up in his car. He yelled at them, asking them if they wanted to "play" with his dog, etc. He was clearly pissed and it made me wonder if there is something going on with a certain age male - is there a trend? Anyway, keep your pets safe.

Decoy is also one to break up fights and calm other dogs down. We take him once every week or two to daycare for socialization (less now that we have BLD - Bad Little Dog) and they like to use him as an "intro dog" when they have new dogs there for their first day. He'll follow the new dog around and keep between them and the others while they get it all figured out.

He hasn't dragged a kid out of a pond or saved a burning school bus full of blind nuns, but he's a good dog and we love him. It was very rough going at first, as I'm sure you know as a Chessie owner. I wasn't firm enough with him at first and he was walking all over me. Ever since I stepped it up he has been an outstanding companion.

Edit: rljatl, lots more pictures on my Flickr page (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bgilbow) if it strikes you.

Oh, I know what you mean for sure. I couldn't leave Bart alone in the house until he about 3 years old. He would always get into something. One time, he ate a whole bag of those trick or treat size Snickers candy bars. Even ate the individual wrapper on every one of them and left the empty plastic bag neatly lying in front of the door. No other trace or evidence. I called the vet because I thought chocolate was deadly to dogs, but the vet said the chocolate to dog's weight ratio was not dangerous. I remember when Buster was about 6 months, I got up out my chair in front of the TV to get something to eat. When I came back in, Buster was sitting in my chair watching TV. I don't mean lying in my chair asleep either. I mean he was sitting in my chair watching the TV. I told him to get his ass out of the chair right now!

I have not been able to roll either of my Chessies over on their back. I would have to use so much strength to do so that it would probably injure them. They will do everything they can to keep from being rolled over to a submissive position. But, they are so loyal and will defend you with their life. Both Buster and Bart will run to get between me and a stranger. They won't bark or do anything but stand there and stare at the stranger with those golden eyes, ready just in case. Invariably, the stranger will stop dead in their tracks and ask permission to approach or pass by. ;-)

One time at the dog park, Bart got in a rope tug of war with a King Pit Bull. After a few minutes the King Pit layed down on the ground still holding onto the rope. Bart drug him about 10 feet and then peed on him. No joke.

Boy, in some of those pics, Decoy looks like Bart in the face. I got Bart from a breeder in Wisconsin. Here are some pics of Bart and Buster. I don't have any recent ones of Bart grown up.

She is a great dog. Only 4 months old now. She was a rescue. We have a well on our property and she had wondered away from mom and fell in.I was taking our French Bulldog out to do his business when I heard her crying. She was soaking wet and almost froze. She was approx 5 weeks when I found her. The vet Sent her DNA off and the results are half Black Lab and half Golden retreiver.

This was "Montana" I found him dying from starvation and dehydration out in the county while shooting one day. He had a monster of an open neck wound. I got him to the vet and he lived with us for three years. Most faithful cat I've ever seen.

It was kind of neat we had a toy poodle that had gotten blind and deaf enough it was hard for him to get around. One day the wife and the dog were in the front yard when two schnauzers came racing across the lawn from next door to attack them.

That cat put both those dogs straight back in the house. Sorry I missed it. Was amazed he'd protect his people like that. Just like a dog.

Funny thing about animals that you love... they know when to disappear to spare you the pain of their passing if it's under their control. I had a dog, Freckles, that ran away when he was old and feable. I seem to have dealt with the fact that he "ran away" better than if he'd died. I was 8. What type of breed is Blue? Kinda hard to tell...color is kinda Boxer-esq, but if he is he's bound to be ~115lbs easy!

Cool pic none-the-less.

GSD and dobe owners: How are these breeds around livestock?

I've had several shepherds over the year (back when I was living on a ranch) and they were great with the stock - they were originally bred as cattle/sheep dogs, hence the "shepherd" title.

Never had dobe's on the ranch, but for the longest mine thought she was a horse. My neighbor's horses come to the fenceline and run laps with Jazz - they both seem to get a kick outta it. Nowadays, when the horse come up, they whinny to let her know they're out and she waits at the door until we let her out to see them. Problem with dobes, though, is they are pretty sure they know better than you what needs to be done - so they'd more likely accomplish their own intentions. As far as just being around livestock (versus working them), mine has made friends with Goats, Horses, Cattle, Rabbits, smaller dogs, etc. If you own a cat or squirrel ranch, though - she'd bankrupt you...

You can't imagine, We were lucky and got Misty when she was 18 mths, She is now 10 and really slowing down.

They lead a fairly sad life up until and if they get off the track. They really don't have any semblance of puppyhood, it's all work and routine but they really take their retired life seriously.

GSD and dobe owners: How are these breeds around livestock?

Speaking for the GSDs, I grew up with one on an 85K acre cattle ranch. Boundaries were set early on and we never had a single problem. These were strict boundaries too; my father will not hesitate to shoot an animal that's bothering livestock. Also, a dog that nips at horses can cause the rider to get bucked off and hurt.

GSDs have the issue of nipping at livestock or horses? Case by case thing or is it a breed issue?

TX_hopeful,

He is a South African Boerboel. He weighs about 130 lbs in that picture. He was the first BB to earn his Schutzhund-A title in the US. There is a guy in KY who has a BB with a full Schutzhund-I title now though.

I sent that picture to UnderArmor and they loved it!

TX,

I don't think AKC recognizes the breed yet so you will have to look under ARBA, American Rare Breed Association.

If you do a search on youtube, there are several videos of Boerboels from the lady who owns Blue. She is very big into the breed and has several. Search for "takes down decoy" and "Batu", that should get plenty of video clips.

He rides in the back of my pickup truck... and much prefers the sink to any other watering device known to man. The hardest trick was teaching him to leave food alone, cause you can't put it high enough to keep him from it.

I've never been around the minis. I love the standards though. Mia and Abby are sisters and they think they are lap dogs! They want to sit on your lap and put their head on your face. They are super sweet. You should see them chase rabbits. It's so funny. Little bowling balls of muscle running as fast as they can and the gap between them and the rabbit only widens. But when they do get a hold of some poor little animal, it's all over but the shoutin'. They will bring body parts to the house as trophies. They weigh somewhere around 40 to 45 pounds. The males get up to 80! You talk about a freaking tank! They are awesome dogs. They are hilarious. A book that I saw described them as clownish, and they are.

Growing up on a farm I never had any use for small dogs as we always had working dogs around.
This little guy changed my mind about Poodles.
Jose Maynard was a Tiny Toy Poodle given to my daughters by their Grandparents. He lived to be almost 18 years old before I had to put him down.
Best damn alarm I ever had. Our family still misses him and hes been gone for almost three years now.

NICE Bull Terriers! What's their personalities like? I've been tempted. I've had working strain Pit Bull and he was great as a pet but naturally highly dog aggressive. I've no need for that trait but I loved the fact you could trust him to not show any human aggression unless someone wrestled with one of us or got aggressive with ANY child or woman in his presence. Are Bull Terriers similar?

I picked up a new dog last week and am very pleased!

He is a GSD mix and smart as a whip. We decided to add a house dog as our neighbor was broken into mid afternoon on a weekday a couple of months back. (While my wife and I were home!) I have been looking since. Zeus was a pound puppy from KY who's new owner could not keep him and listed him on Craigs list. He was about 5 minutes from my house!

About 17 weeks now. First pic was last week the other three are today. Looks to me like he is growing. He was 34lbs on the 16th.

Ha! He's a good looking dog! My cousin has a boxer named sarge, hes gettin up there in years and he's now officially got a grey beard all over! Its funny because he has that, "screw you Im old now" kind of attitude as well. But hes pretty well behaved, my cousin works at Y-12 in TN so she trained him with their K-9 unit shepherds.

I finally found out how to post a pic of mine on here. The first is of him at about 4 weeks old and the second is of him now at 16 weeks. He's a lean mean dog food/headphone/curtain/fake plant/shoe etc eating machine :D But we are breaking him of it. Hes not to bad just gets pissed when you leave him alone. Hes getting better though.

And both of the girls.

They were abandoned behind a house along with 6 others, we got to give a few of them away with friends. Tonka was my roommates and Bailey was my girlfriends, but neither worked out and I gladly took them both, inseparable.

Bailey's the shy one and Tonka, the smaller one with the face that always looks like she just did something wrong, knows how to unlock doors, open doors, jumps over our 5" gates and already knows all the usual tricks. It's getting hard to contain her and front yards are by no means small.

We lost our 10 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback in April (unexpectedly) so I haven't felt like posting in this thread. But in August we heard from the breeder on the Eastern Shore and she had a ridgeless female she was trying to place. Since we had an empty crate and my wife missed not having a dog around when I travel we took her.

She's not ready for guard dog duty yet but she will be (as much as a hound can be). Here are some pictures I took yesterday:

Yeah, the sun was in her eyes when I took that, I just snapped it off while taking some gun pics one day. I agree they do get a bad rap. This is my 2nd femaLe, and they were both the same way. Thunder scares the piss out of them, but they sure don't take kindly to strangers. We have her, the bassett hound, and the chihuahua, and they all get along great.

trojan...is this your first vizsla??

I'm 99% sure this will be my next pup....I've always been a fan of the lab & have two of them now, but think this dog will fit my type of hunting and disposition seems to a good fit. Also like the fact of a lot less shedding and dog smell. A buddy on the hunting lease ended up with one and I was taken with her immediatly.

Artos, no this is my second Vizsla. They are great animals and you are right they shed very little and the hair is so short that you dont see it for the most part and they are very clean as well. Probably a little more energy than a lab I run mine daily. Very soft dogs cant stand it if they get in trouble and have to be trained a little softer than most. Not sure were you are in the south but there is a great breeder in NC. By the way not totake away from labs but a vizsla can do anything a lab can do.

My first priority in a dog is being a good family member and buddy...they also have to be loyal and tolerant of children.

I do expect my Dogs to earn their keep as wing shooting is my main passion. 95% of my hunting is small birds (dove / quail / whitewings) with the rest being ducks. I'm at the bottom of the world down here and it very seldom freezes and most days on the dove field can be 90-100 degrees. Because of this, I have moved to smaller labs (+/-55lbs) as they do better in the heat and I have no reason for a large one with little to no geese to retrieve.

I've read up on them a bit and undestand vizsla's are quite sensitive and this also fists up my alley as I pretty much use Wolter's training methods. My older lab is sneaking up to 10 & still going strong but i know it's time to start looking. Amazing how attached we get to the silly creatures and wish their life span was closer to ours. Sure does hurt but I've noticed new puppies can cure the pain pretty quickly.

Appreciate the contact / offer but our biologist assures me he knows where my next viz will come from here in TX. I just have to decide when.

Here's Arcus the monster Labrador. 105 pounds, and emphatically NOT overweight. Thankfully he's just a big goofy lab, or he might be difficult. He did actually save my wife one night when she was camping alone off-camp-ground in the Redwoods and some guy tried to attack her, he got a face full of angry 105 pound dog. Only seen him do that 2 or 3 times in the 8 years we've had him, but I'm thankful for it. You could also light a 155mm Howitzer off over his head and I'm not sure he'd notice much.

And since it's Christmas time, here's Arcus's evil sister greyhound in Reindeer.

Honda Roo also doubles as a pillow when the need arises....by far the best dog Ive ever had. Whats funny about her is we got her from an ex boyfriend of my sisters. They were moving around, and we took her to stay at our place for a little while. A little while turned into weeks which turned into months. They split up, and this guy never came back to get his dog. That was about 9 years ago or so.

We are not exactly sure what breed but strongly think she is at least half Aus Cattle Dog and something like a Rottie for her colors.

They are not an AKC registered breed but there are some other larger kennel groups that do. Mine came with a pedigree and we were able to register her with an aussie group.

As far as genetics goes Im not 100% but they have all the same characteristics as full size dogs. Ive had a few regular aussies over the years and they are great dogs. We got this mini from a breeder in WA state, and they got for some $$$. We got Roxy just in time as a breeder in Germany told the lady he would pay double what we were and then have to pay airfare to Germany.

And ours is actually quite small for a mini. Usually they are about 15-20lbs. Ours is 9, and the breeder said she is the smallest puppy they have ever had.

Lobo was a rattie. They are usually more chunky than foxies, although typically have the same tri-color. Our guy was unusual being all tan.

He was a tough little tank too (1991-2009).

Hey Blackscot, nice looking pup lobo, very sorry about the loss. Can't say I've ever seen a rattie.

Auggie is all legs and runs like a greyhound.. seems just about that fast too. Fiesty... My son was walking her in his old neighborhood and a pit bull came after Auggie. He picked her up over his head and the pit bull bit him a few times trying to get to her. All she wanted to do was to be let down so she could take care of that pit .. She has this angry bark that I've heard a few times.. It's hilarious sounds like a dog having a tourette attack, just cursing profusely. That was one of those moments, I'm sure it didn't help the situation. What is with these pups, size doesn't matter..;) My son healed up ok, the cops showed up and put the pit bull down.

Looks like a great guy Robb.

Thanks, that was taken with my Sony Cyber-Shot point-and-shoot (12.8 megapixel)

This one was taken with my Canon XT Rebel (SLR) 8 megapixel using my new 2.8 17-50mm Tamron lens and a Canon speedlite 420EX bouncing the flash off the wall/ceiling.

Cool. Same behavior too, versus the standard?

Yes they are very similar. Great guard dogs (like I said she doesnt miss anything), very energetic, and had the herding instinct. Roxy will grab your pant leg and hold on as you walk around. Loves to be outdoors, and she is very smart for a small dog.

This is Charli. We rescued her at 5 Mos. Now she's 3. An awesome dog, she's gotten pretty protective. Sounds the alarm when anyone gets near the property, but she's really sensitive with us. And way smart to boot. Took to training very well too.

Nice GSD from one GSD owner to another!

Speaking from experience, socialize the heck out of her. Otherwise she will probably end up biting someone.

Hey Blackscot, nice looking pup lobo, very sorry about the loss......

.......a pit bull came after Auggie.

Thanks for the condolences. It's been nearly 3 months and I'm still broken up over it. :(

Also really sorry to hear of the pit bull attack. I've had one or two close calls myself with loose, out-of-control dogs (although not pits). One time got within a second or two of resorting to deadly force. The owner finally managed to excercise restraint just in time.

Albert is really making me want to get another kitty. I've had 3 over the past 30 years, along with 4 dogs. Right now though there is not a single critter in the house. Feels reeeeely empty......

This thread is helping a lot though.
