I recall Magpul had a neat answer to this, as well as KAC. The curious quote:
"The 5.56mm is too big and the 9mm is too small," he said. "We really need something in between those."
The 6.8spc is "in between those" in diameter, but if they mean in terms of ballistics and recoil, ugh. We'd have another generation of poodle-shooting naysayers.
