So my wife has actually offered to buy me a firearm for my birthday. If I decide to ask for a handgun, what should I go for (assuming her price limit is 1K, give or take)? Current inventory includes a S&W Model 645, Springfield XD 45ACP w/ 5" barrel, Springfield 9mm XDM, Glock Model 30, S&W 460 XVR (don't ask!), Ruger LCP (don't say it!), Taurus Judge (glove box only), and a Browning Buckmark. What do I absolutely need to own?

Don't see a 1911 in that list. You could get a decent 1911 like a Kimber Warrior or a Springfield TRP for around that price. A plastic alternative would be a HK45 or a M&P45.

An intriguing possibility is a Walther P22 or SIG Mosquito and a can. You could get that setup, with tax fee for under $1k. To add to the can idea, you could get a new barrel and can for one of the pistols you already have (like the XD 9mm).

You could also get one of those new Nightguard .44 mags, but you've already got some large and unpleasant revolvers.

You could expand the 9mm collection with a G19 for carry or a G34 for target/competition. Or you get the M&P equivalents (M&PC and M&PL I think).

Lots of possibilities. You could also spend the money on extra mags, ammo, and a class.

Glock 19 or S&W 642 (442 if you want black). Everyone should own one of each. :)

It sounds like you're covered. Maybe get a second of whatever your primary carry gun is.

Wife and I both took a two day course in defensive handgun last year prior to getting concealed carry permit. Also took a concealed carry and low light shooting course. Pat Goodale with Practical Firearms Training. Learned a ton from an excellent instructor. Now it's just getting in the range time to practice, practice, practice.

You could buy a membership to your favorite range if you don't have one already.

That base is covered and I'm on the waiting list for the range five minutes from the house. The 1911 idea is attractive and I like sticking with .45ACP but I'm kind of overwhelmed with all the choices out there. Was looking at a CZ Dan Wesson Pointman Seven not long ago. Any thoughts on CZ 1911s?

What do you want to do with it? What are your interests? Do you want something to just plink...hunt....SD.....etc.

Do you have any thoughts at all as to what you want? Is this a situation where've you got 2, 5, 10, 15 "want to own" guns and are looking to pair the list down?

With such an open question, you could get a million different answers. For instance, as I look at the list, one thing I see missing that many feel should be part of an all around handgun collection is a .38/.357 revolver.

Is a purchase of ammo, magazines and a nice pair of ear pro already covered?

With the way ammo prices are increasing......

Don't see a 1911 in that list.

Agreed a nice clean 1911 Springfield, Colt, Kimber etc.
