View Full Version : Training/Practice ammo?

Did a search, didn't find what I wanted to know:

What is the general consensus on a good (reliable) training ammo?

I agree with "train as you fight", but I don't think I can afford to blow through hundreds of dollars of Mk262 or Hornady TAP everytime I hit the range. I was kinda leaning towards Black Hills blue box 75gr, but I wanted the opinion of those who see a lot of ammo-related failures in their classes.

Seems like all the good Q3131A from IMI has dried up.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. Sources for purchase would be appreciated as well.

thanks,
Jason

At this point everyone wants to know where to get some cheap half way decent ammo.

You may want to hit some shows and see what you can turn up. Check any and every sporting goods store.

I was in Sports Authority a few months back because they were taking two bucks off of every box of ammo.

I bought WWB 9mm for 6 bucks a box...after the coupon it was 4.00 per box:D

Then I saw they had a bit of WWB .223 in 20 round boxes for.....don't cry.......2.99 per box! after the two dollar coupon it was a buck and some change after taxes.

3K in 9mm

2k and some change in .223

I did have to go around to every store in my area to gather all of the ammo. I wish they had had a bunch more. :D

Scavage away, there has to be some ammo out there for you.

Aim Surplus has 1999-2003 Guatemalan (IMG) for just under $200/1000 plus shipping. It goes up from there.:(

For 9mm it's WWB from Wally World at $130 per 1000.

For 5.56 I usually shoot GA Canned Heat at $200 per 1000.

Hey Marc,

Just a word of caution on the Georgia Arms Canned Heat. Me and some other buddies purchased over 10,000 round of this stuff in 2005, great ammo....or at least it was at the time.

I don't know what is going on at Georgia Arms, but I have seen the Canned Heat blow up no less than 4 AR's in 2006.

Back in the late 90's I had a remanufactured round blow up a custom 1911 and stayed away from remanufactured ammo until I did a lot of research on the Canned Heat. Results were good, but I won't buy it again.

The ONLY remanufactured ammo I'll buy now is Black Hills Blue box.....I received 5,000 rounds last week that was ordered in July of 2006 and placed another ordred yesterday for another 5,000 rounds, and got a delivery date in late July of 2007. :(

Take care and stay safe,

Thanks for the info guys. I guess I'll stick with BH Blue and Red.

Didn't PMC go belly up recently? I thought I heard someone had bought their facility and was going to continue production under a different name.

Hmmm. I've been shooting Canned Heat for a few years now with nary a problem, but that can't be ignored.

I guess the 3k I still have left will be the last I get.

Black Hills reman 55gr is ~$295/1000 at Fulton Armory, ~$300/1000 at Gilberts Guns. Those were the first two hits I got off Google.

Try Kiser Munitions (email joseph@kiser.com for price) or http://www.northwestloading.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1_2&products_id=1337

I get LEO pricing, so I don't know what the current market price on Black Hills is. On Aug 1st, they took close to a $50 price increase on the 55gr blue box ammo.

You may want to check the ammo section at the "other site" they have a sticky at the top of the page and they update prices and avaliblity daily from several different vendors.

Joseph Kieser is a good to go guy, I have heard a couple times that he has some of the best prices on Black Hills ammo.

No kidding.

I'll admit I've been plinking a lot with Wolf. I'm just caching any good rifle ammo I can get my hands on, and have been focusing on pistol shooting. I probably need the trigger time more with handguns anyway.

I suprised that "yall" VA guys have not stopped into The Armory for the S&B for 175.00 + a case (1000)!!!

I bought a case right before Thanksgiving and had put a few hundred down range with no problems! It has around the same accuracy as the 40 round Wally World value packs...

D'oh!

I was in Va Beach today, and I thought about stopping at The Armory, but I didn't.

I've shot quite a bit of S&B pistol ammo with no problems, but I have yet to try their rifle ammo.

What about the Lake City SS109 that ammoman has, is that OK to use for a class?

Thanks,
Chris
