We shot at Range 1 on Quantico, 200 meter. I wanted to start her at 25 but no luck..

I did a lot of snapping in and weapons safety classes the past couple of weeks. Today we focused on sight picture, sight alignment.

She was a happy camper.

I'm proud of her, it's the beginning of her relationship with rifles.

Good for you!

I too was at the range today and the gentlemen beside me brought his daughter and her friend to the range. I also saw a few other families all together.

It doesn't get much better than that!

Not yet, just the typical high school freshman drama stuff.

Yes...but I think I'll let the lad watch her shoot and then allow him to clean the rifle afterwards while I question him about his intentions:D

I'm not in that boat.. yet, as my daughter is only 2yrs old but come on... what were your intentions at that age? Lock her up, boarding school, military school, All things I'm considering... F-ing nightmare.

Truly great you took her out to the range. Great to see families, especially nowadays, sharing and enjoying common interest. Don't forget this when she asks you to take her to some britney spears or hanna montana concert...... :D

Funny that you should bring that up.........she wanted to go to the Britney Spears concert last month......$500 USD a ticket:eek:

When she was younger I stressed critical thinking with her, do far, as far as I know, she's doing good but the book is still being written.

Good for both of you! I'm glad you are teaching her good habits. That trigger finger is staying safely away from the loud switch. I am guessing Dad has spent a lot of time on a Marine Corps range himself. :D

My daughter is 17, and has been shooting pistols and rifles for about 10 years now. She has "her own" Walther P22, and really enjoys shooting Dad's AR's.

She's getting her own BCM/LMT carbine when she turns 18. Until then, she gets to shoot it and clean it, but not own it.

Wait till your young lady tells her friends at school how much fun she had, and shows off a few targets. Nothing like instilling a little respect into the prospective boyfriends.

Good memories for both of you. Trust me, she will remember that for a long time.

My oldest daughter will be 6ys old in July. Shes only watched dad shoot so far, Ima' thinkin' its time for her to get a little trigger time, maybe behind the Rem. 597 or something... Or maybe we should stick to pellet guns for now, Im anxious to get her involved.
Looks like you guys had fun, good for you.

Hmmmm - ponder the cost of feeding a pellet gun. I was in Cabela's today, and they wanted $20.99 for a 525-round box of Federal bulk-pack .22 ammo.

So a nice pellet rifle is sounding real attractive right now.

That was at the Verizon Center, not a scalper. She didn't go and yesterday's activity gives me some ammo.

Any time she comes up with that type of expensive requests, I'll break it down to how many rounds we could buy with that money instead.:D

I've taken one lad shooting, but all of her other suitors have had to have a 'get to know me and the ground rules meeting' before they take her out. Of course this always occurs while I am cleaning a weapon :D

Brittney maybe. but a lot of the 16 year olds consider her a has been now. Hannah Montana is looked upon as being good for the middle school girls. Now for the high school girls, Taylor Swift is who all the girls go nuts over these days. Froze my ass off at her concert in February when I took my girls there. The things a daddy will do.

Yes, I have found it quite effective to have a friendly discussion with the young lad's father prior to any dating. Believe me, you will likely find him to be an ally of yours. It is in his best interest as well as yours, that his son does not "do anything stupid."

My ex and I used to have a combined "I love me" wall in the house. She was an Army warrant, and I was a graduate of the University of Science, Music and Culture. ;) Nothing like the young lad seeing lots of photos of you, heavily-armed and in military garb, to make him ponder his life choices.

My daughter ran through potential suitors the way Rosie O'Donnell runs through a Chinese buffet. Lots of boys calling and visiting. But she is a smart girl, and carefully coached. "Daddy, they are all stupid and just want one thing." She's settled on one boy that seems to be a smart, respectful lad.

The trick is to weed out the cunning wolves and stupid sheep, and make sure she finds a loyal sheepdog.

Best of luck to you.

That's what blows my mind, when she came up and asked about Britney.........I pointed out that she is/was a has been. That didn't float with her...but she still didn't go;)

She's an interesting one to figure out when it comes to pop culture. She's been to U-2 and Cold Play concerts (BTW, they are MUCH cheaper). She has Taylor, Britney, Tom Jones and various other artist from 1960 to the present on her iPod. She's also tri-lingual (English, Czech, French), she is much more intelligent than I am but I have experience over her:D

She really took to the shooting, she was freezing her rear end off but I had to practically drag her off of the range.

Good stuff! I'm working on mine right now. Santa brought her a pink Daisy air rifle for Christmas and I had been getting her amped up on A Christmas Story. :D I finally got to get her out to the 'range' at my buddy's property last weekend. She had been reluctant to learn very much beyond mandatory safety and sight picture. Saturday night (after we arrived) before we turned the lights out in the camp trailer, she says (7 years old, mind you), "Daddy, I don't want to hurt your feelings...but I have something to tell you." Long story short, she didn't want to shoot because her First Grade teacher had been instilling HER fear of guns by telling the kids that they're "bad and they kill people." My kid is smarter than that, so I asked her, "Honey, have you ever seen any of my guns come out of the safe or their locked cases and kill anyone?" "LOL, no Daddy...guns aren't alive, they can't do that." ;) I ask, "So do you think it's reasonable to say that GUNS are bad or the PEOPLE using them to do bad things?" Well, her answer was obvious. I'm encouraging her to ask questions in class like, "Teacher, why do the police have them, then?" or "Doesn't it make more sense to learn about something instead of just fearing it?" We'll see where that gets us. I'm not talking to the teacher or administrative staff because I know it won't go anywhere.

I think we've got a handle on it at home now, especially since she couldn't WAIT to load the next BB. :D She was also giggling while I was doing reload drills with the 1911. Turn around when we're all done and she's clapping. :)

Taking aim (plywood angled down slightly to minimize bounce):

High group on lower A-zone of 1/3 scale IPSC target...from about 20ft. VERY acceptable, especially for the first rounds ever!

Absolutely awesome!! Kudos to all of you who take the time to do this with your children of all ages.

Kudos for forcing her to wear the proper eye protection as well. As one of the club RSO, this is something I have to address at my local club just about every time I make the trip. There are too many things can go wrong at a range that can result in the permanent loss of vision.

I've got to add to this great thread as well.

Took my (then 12 yr old) daughter to the range for the first time in mid-Feb. She had a wonderful time. She loved shooting the rifles but didn't particularly like shooting the handguns (.45 and 9mm) so I went a picked up a Beretta Neos in .22LR for her 13th birthday (earlier this month.) We went this Saturday to try it out and she liked it. But she told me she still preferred shooting the rifles.

Last month, mine told me she wanted to become a Misguided Child herself. My heart nearly stopped. She wants to become an MP, then maybe become a K-9 handler, if she works hard and does well.

I think I have finally figured out how to be completely terrified and very proud at the same time.

Her mother took it calmly. She looked at me, announced "This is all your fault", and did not speak to me for four days.

I dunno. Maybe yours and mine will be in the same platoon at PI.

Chuck....great pictures, most excellent father/daughter bonding.

Tereza isn't ready to leave the stability of the ground yet. Her shooting is pretty good for her experience level but until she consistantly hits the center ring, she'll be on the deck. Right now out of a 30 round magazine she'll get 20 of the rounds into the center ring. She actually hit the PVC pipe (target stand) once on Saturday which gave me an opportunity to point out how the round goes in small but comes out large.

By the end of the summer we should have her shooting off hand, after that I'll pick up an ACOG and start going over scope engagement with her.

The biggest take away for me from this past range time was her spotting and giving adjustments to her uncle in Czech, I wouldn't allow her to speak English to him:p

Great thread guys. On a semi-related note, my mother was terrified of guns, and didn't like the fact that I am so into them. After alot of convincing, I got her out to the range with me. I started her of with my P22 and GSG5, and wouldn't you know, she loved it. She is a surprisingly good shot also. Now, anytime she calls, she wants to know when we are going shooting next. I take her at least every other week. After that first time, she was so excited, she told all her freinds and co workers what a great time she had, and did a little bragging about what a good shot she is.:D Her first target is still on her refrigerator. Anyway, just wanted to chime in on how much fun it is to introduce new people into this great passtime of ours. I know it has brought my mother and I closer as family. And I hope the same goes for you and yours.

'Son I got a shotgun and a shovel...I doubt anyone would miss you.' :D

I'm going to suggest you all refrain from making a statement like that to your daughters' boyfriends.
My oldest daughter (14) just ended a relationship with a boy we (her mother and I) knew was trouble. When he first started seeing my daughter, I told him I expected him to be a gentleman and that he needed to look at the photos on my facebook page (images of me shooting FA weapons).
I've been sweating bullets (no pun intended) for the past two weeks because said young man is very upset that my daughter dumped him and is a bleeding heart liberal. He knows I'm a serious gun owner and has he has joked in the past about being afraid I'd shoot him if he did anything with my daughter. Now I'm concerned that he may make false accusations about me threatening him because he thinks that I forced my daughter to dump him.
All I'm saying is that making any sort of threatening comment, no matter how innocent intended, could come back to bite you in the ass. I wouldn't put it past this young man to tell his parents I threatened him (I never did), which would probably mean the suspension of my LTCF and possible criminal charges.

Okay...I'm ready to send Tereza to summer camp tomorrow. She has 1000 rds of Black Hill 77gr match. The USMC Rifle Team Armorer has done some tweaking of the 6920; A2 buttstock (EIC requirement) and a 2 stage trigger. He didn't modify the gas tube/key or put a crown on the muzzle. They may do that later on but as the rifle is right now, it doesn't need those mods.

Okay...I'm ready to send Tereza to summer camp tomorrow. Smuckatelli, is this a shooting summer camp at MCBQ? Just curious, as I'd love to get my 8yo involved in the NoVA area if available.

I havea checkmate can we runw/ a sbr22 setup Iplan on tossin on a pistol. oakmax, my daughter does well with a Ruger MKIII 22/45 w/5.5" bull barrel. She spent the better part of 5 months working from bench rest before she tried standing/offhand shooting. As expected the long bull barrel was heavy firing offhand, and I wondered if I was going to have to buy another (read lighter) pistol for her. Her solution? She grabbed one of momma's 3lb dumbells and started working out with it - holding it in her shooting stance w/arms extended. A week or so of doing this during SpongeBlah commercials did the trick

A few pics from the Wounded Warrior shoot at MCQB a few weeks back:

The shooting camp is at Camp Butner in NC, its part of the Civilian Marksmanship Program that the USMC Rifle Team conducts each year.

Sorry that we weren't able to visit the Wounded Warrior Event; we were on Range 1 at the time and by the time we were finished, you guys were apcking up.

your daughters summer camp has drill sergeants?

reminds me of a guy in OSUT... he said "what? OSUT isn't hard- this is ****in summer camp." a shame our drill sergeant heard him say it...

No, not drill instructors.....I would have never gotten away with that;)

USMC Primary Marksmanship Instructors (PMI) also wear the 'Smokey Bear.'

Thanks to you guys who have posted pics of taking their kids out.
It helped me do the same. My stepdaughter (14) started to express an interest in shooting.
My wife and I both felt it was good to encourage that, so we took her to the range for a while yesterday.

We had a good time until the surprise shower decided to show up, cutting our visit a bit short.
Good thing is, she's stoked about going back sometime soon.
Great to find some common ground, some way to foster some self-confidence and reliance... good bonding time, too.

She preferred the P22 to the USP40 - no big surprise - loved the AR, but hedged at shooting the Garand.
I'm glad I remembered the camera for at least a quick couple of pics, though we primarily were just focusing on having a safe, fun time.

We'll work on shooting form, breathing, and those technical items later... but this trip was a big success in my book.
She blasted the hell out of the zombie heads we'd printed out on 8.5x11 paper with a big grin.

To the OP, a good Father you are. This country NEEDS more GOOD Father's!

I personally believe that it IS the Father's job to teach his children (Daughter especially) how to defensd themselves.

I couldn't talk my wife into buying a match rifle for Tereza. I ended up trading the 6721 (1300 rds through the barrel) for a brand new in the box Rock River Arms NMA4:

We shot a competition match on Saturday at Quantico to give her some 600 yard time before she goes to Camp Perry. She is really happy with the RRA....she pointed out that for competition training she wants to run the RRA but for quality father/daughter time she wants to run the 6920..........

My oldest daughter is 5 yoa. I can not wait till she is a little older. She is shooting her big brother's BB gun now. She already asks to come outside when I shoot in our back yard (live out in the sticks).

I know she already has an interest in shooting and I cant wait to feed it. I have my son shooting now (12 years old) and he loves it. I will definitely get pics of her first time out there when that day comes along.

An A-1 length stock for standing would be nice; every 5/8 inch helps.

BZ to Dad on providing her the opportunity and encouragement!

I have never been able to convince anyone here to go with me to Camp Perry.

but for quality father/daughter time she wants to run the 6920..........

She has good taste.:D
