I was wondering if anyone can share the details of the UK SFW trails that happened in 2000.

IIRC, the Diemaco AR entry beat out both the HK G36 and the SIG 55x rifles for the British SF contract.

I'm interested to know what testing was conducted and how each entry did in the various stages.

The testing cost more than the # of rifles they bought.
They tested for climatic conditions - desert - jungle - arctic. Conducted life cycle and reliability testing - as well as a few other things.

I spoke to one of the guys involved in the trial -- apparently the L119A1 (C8SFW) was quite far ahead in the terms of reliability than the piston guns...

It was also the operator selected choice.

CRW wing bought some Sig 552's later for UC work -- not sure how they turned out -- but I think the 552 is a turd.

Kevin,

Thanks for the info! Do you also happen to know the details of the reliability testing?

The UK SFW trial seems to have answered the question of whether direct gas guns were good enough when compred to the piston operated guns. Seems like the direct gas gun proved more than adequate...
