View Full Version : How to identify upper manufacturer?

I left this question in another forum and have received no replies, so thought I'd ask here.

I recently picked up an AR15 in a private sale that was advertised as being an S&W M&P15. Sure enough, the lower is an S&W, and the carbine appears unfired. I am suspicious that the upper may not be an S&W (not that it matters at the price paid), but how would you know? Are there any identifying marks on an S&W M&P15 upper? This one is a 16" M4 configuration, with M203 barrel cut, A2 (F height) front sight, and an A2 birdcage flash hider. The top of the barrel just behind the birdcage is marked "5.56 Nato 1-9". The bolt carrier has a phosphate finish that matches the barrel & the bolt carrier key screws appear well-staked. The handguard has a lower rail, but I understand that may be an aftermarket add-on.

Is there any way to tell the manufacturer?
