I am new to this forum but like what I've seen so far. I have a S&W VTAC carbine that is very accurate and reliable. I would also like to have a Colt carbine.

I recently found a great deal and bought a NIB Colt 6724 HBAR. Great trigger, 24" SS barrel, etc. Is it practical to put an M4 style upper on this rifle? Are there any potential problems that should be considered? I have it posted on other forums to trade for a Colt or LMT M4 style carbine, but that is probably a long shot so I was considering converting it to a carbine.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Remember that a carbine is not just a short rifle. The buffer/spring combo that is used in the rifle is not the same that is in a carbine. The lower can be converted into a carbine, but some parts will have to be changed.
