Is the only difference between the 17 and 19 the number of rounds each carries? Or, are there other practical differences I am unaware of. Both seem to good choices.

Learn to fish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glock_19).

There is a chart at that link which goes over all the dimensional differences between the two. Functionally, they operate the same way.

The difference in the feel of different sized Glocks comes mostly from the backstrap. The curve or hump on the full size guns is lower on the backstrap. So on the 19 it will be higher which effectively changes grip angle a bit. Whether this makes either any easier or harder to shoot is up to the individual.

I believe I shoot the 17 a bit better because I feel like I have a bit more control over the grip. I've never done a side by side comparison on the timer though so it's all subjective.

In the 3rd gen. Glocks there's also a difference in spacing between finger grooves. The G19 has a less room between the trigger guard and the top groove compared to the G17. This, combined with dimensional and other differences does create a feel unique to each pistol. I own both and do equally well with them at the range.

There is the obvious size difference. I don't have it memorized, but go to Glock's web site and it's listed.

I own both a G17 and G19. There is a distinct difference in how each feels. More than the difference between a full size 1911 vs. a Commander size 1911.

For me, the Glock 19 feels much better, and points better than the Glock 17. Truth be told, I might shoot the G17 a tad more accurately during slow fire precision shooting. Not much, just a tad. But I carry the G19 vs. the G17, only because of how the G19 feels and points for me.

This being said, a different person with a different size of hand and length of fingers, might find the G17 pointing better, and feeling more natural.

Both are excellent 9mm's. Two of the best out there, in my opinion. While one can gain information via the internet, you still need to feel, and to actually shoot both guns, to decide which is best for you.

Money spent renting both guns at a range, shooting side by side, may save you money in the long run.

Try them both and whatever you feel better with.

I prefer G19.

I have both and like both.

Grip length and slide length are bot a touch shorter on G19 and make it slightly handier for carry and concealment.

G17 mags will work in the G19, so effectively they can have the same capacity. Putting the 17 mag in negates the concealability advantage of the G19 grip but may not be bad for your extra mag.

If I could have only one I'd stick with the 19 jsut because it seems to be the "just right" size for handiness while still retaining good handling charactristics.

The G17 sticks around in my collection for the longer sight radius, and it is my beater 9 that gets all new handloads tested in it first. It's my range loaner and my ready-to-go pistol in my hurricane kit when it's not in active service.

I have never really seen any practical advantage of the 19 over the 17. They are both large, lightweight handguns that are easy to carry but a mixed-bag to conceal.

I have owned G19s, but have traded or sold them all. I have 3 G17s and am always looking for a deal on another.

The grips are different....the 19 is more comfortable in my hand. Just my two cents.

Of course, my post should be prefaced by a huge IMHO. I like them both, but I like the G17 a bit better. I never really liked the grip on any Glock, but the G17 works well for me.

I'd take a Taurus revolver over a G17. Yes, I really hate the grip angle that much. If I did a quick draw I'd be shooting at birds.

The G19 is perfect though. I don't think there's a more practical and well balanced handgun out there.

I, like many people shoot the G19 better. It feels better in my hand and points more naturally.

When I was first looking for a full-sized 9mm, I would always hold a Glock 17, and it never felt right in my hand. I thought I understood why some people complained about grip angles from holding the 17. I had scratched Glock off of the list. Then I kept hearing people sing praises of the Glock 19, so I rented one. For ME, the 19 feels great in my hand, I STILL don't like the feel of the 17.

I own a Glock 19 now.

Same here brother. The 17 has been my "go to" gun for many years. I've had a few G 19's but they always get gone somehow and the 17's stay. The 19 is an almost perfect sized handgun but the 17 has the slight edge with me.

As many have stated, size and round count are the only differences. Fit and feel are subjective things and varies between individuals. My wife and I handled and shot both the 17 and 19 before we finally decided to go with the 19. The reason was that she felt it fitted her hands better than the 17 and pointed more naturally. To me the difference wasn't as great but still noticeable. The original intent was for a home defense handgun that my wife felt comfortable with. Size didn't really enter into the equation for our purposes.
