I was shooting the ancient 20" A2 the other day. As the first round went down range, it was like wow! I forgot how smooth it felt and on the second shot, had a :) ----thoughts?

I like shooting the A2 everyonce in a while also.

And as luck would I have it, I have a complete A2 upper waiting on a lower which will likely be one of my next builds.

I'll be looking at at least two, maybe three lowers when I get back from my tour!

I'm looking at an A3 20" to allow for optics. The Govt. profile is light.

Ive done most of my shooting on the AR platform with an M-16A2, so I have quite a bit of experience with the 20". I enjoy shooting a 20" every now and then.

I'm thinking of a 16" middy with an A1 stock(CavArms)

Ive never done the mid length thing. Might have to give it a try one day.

I like the middy from the standpoint of the longer sight radius and rail space. I don't use the vertical grip and the space allows for a more comfortable position with the flashlights(3&6).

Yup, the A2 is real smooth that's why it's the first AR I built in early '05, then after that I built a M4 type, middy and 9mm carbines.

Mine is a Colt M16A2 upper half which was a new surplus when I built my rifle with M16A2 buttstock group and I used a new Match Target HBAR lower.

My A2 is smoother than my 16" medium contour barrel middy carbine, It reminds me of my former first new AR-15 SP-1. :)

Still prefer the 20" Gov't A2.

My Service Conditions rifle is hybrid US/ Canadian clone .
20" Bushmaster with a DCM float tube, RRA trigger and C79 Elcan with a Les Tam NM sling. I love shooting it, way smoother than the shorties. Heavy though.

The first AR15 I shot was a 20" A2 while I was at the range shooting my Garand and Ruger Mini-30. Only 3 people at the range that day back in the late 80's in southern Kalifornia (South Bay Rod & Gun Club) and the one guy with the AR15 wanted to shoot my garand and so we traded rifles for a few rounds.

I remember thinking how light it felt, but at the time I was never really thrilled with a .22 on steroids and considered myself a 30 caliber man with the lowest I'd ever go would be the 7.62x39. He did like the Mini 30 better then the Garand. The Mini 30 was fine for the first few shots, but after she warmed up the accuracy went to hell.

His AR15 had a scope on the carry handle and seemed to shoot very well, don't remember what brand it was and didn't really care at the time, being the 30 caliber man I was. The third guy at the range also had a Garand and an 03A3.

Now that I have a Bushy M4, I'm getting addicted to this .22 on steroids and as I learn more about this platform, I'm really starting to like it more and more. After I get my first M4 build done the next build will be an A2 setup. I'm still a 30 caliber man but now my mind is a little more open than how it used to be.

I also like the 20" guns. Old -A/-A1/SP1s especially.

Don't miss the A2 AT ALL..... don't miss the long barrel bouncing around inside a vehicle..don't miss how it sucks to try and fire the A2 (Fence post) wearing Armor in the prone or any other position.... Don't miss the Fixed A2 Upper... don't miss the weight..... etc...etc..etc..

I may be nostalgic... but not for the A2.... You all can have it...

Yeah I agree about the length inside a vehicle, the weight never was much of an issue with me. But I do prefer the carbine to my old M16A2. Theres just something about the A2, for the longest time I shot better with the A2 irons than the M4.

We have one extra A2 upper with a free float tube, NM sights and a 1/7 Colt Govt. barrel along with a Colt "CS" stock (A1 length, A2 materials) for shooting service rifle. That's it; everything else is a flat top carbine. Can't remember the last time it was mounted on a lower and shot.

I'm nostalgic for my M1A, too. But I'm getting ready to sell it (NIB) with NIW bayonet, 4 new USGI mags and war belt (circa 1972). Talk about fencepost!

This may be a dumb question but do the standard 20" rifles have M4 extensions these days or are those limited to the carbines?

I don't know about colt by CMMG advertises 20" barrels with M4 extensions. Speaking about M4 extensions how many early A1 (SP1), and then later A2's worked fine with rifle feed ramps :p

I think SDI offers a 20" barrel with M4 feed ramps. I've considered getting one.:D
