My new duty rifle came in last week. MSAR STG-556 with a 20" Barrel. I added a Trijicon TA-11 optic and a Lasermax laser on the rail. Test and evaluation write up coming up as soon as my fractured left arm heals.

Urban. My department mainly uses the AR / M4 type weapons, but the head firearms trainer is open to other rifle/carbines for duty use. :)

What made you decide on the 20" barrel for LE/Urban use?

Let us know what level of accuracy you achieve.

I chose the 20" length due to several reasons:

1. The overall length is similar to a 14" to 16" barreled AR (with the stock extended and collapsed).

2. I get more velocity with the 20" barrel. Plus, if I need a 16" barrel, I can get one and install it easily.

I like how that lazer installs on that rail right in front of the ACOG.

The term laser is an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.

I'm glad to see a few more LEO's involved with this type of system for duty and patrol functions. I know there are "purist" who might scoff at the idea of a non AR type but you have a big thumbs up from me.

Do you work for a large or small agency? Most large departments still seem to have issues with long guns that are not uniform even in agencies that allow individual officer preference in a handgun. My congrads to your firearms instructor and administration for thinking outside the box. Allowing you to choose your own rifle (and handgun I would assume) will increase your confidence to use these tools in the field.

The U.S. Customs Service Investigations (Now ICE Office of Investigations) and Air and Marine Units (Now CBP Air and Marine) issued the Steyr AUG-P up until this year, when sadly, they were withdrawn from service to be replaced with M-4's. A sad, sad day.

If you are using the AUG for entries, get the 16" barrel. It makes for a nice entry sized weapon in the stack.

The 16" barrel is shorter, but the 20" barrel is fine for entries. Overall length is like my M4 and my Socom 16 in a Troy MCS stock. My departments' SWAT guys use the 11.5" barreled M16s for entry.

True. But your 16" AUP-P would still be as short or possibly sharter than those 12.5" M-4's with greater reach. The AUG-P is such a nice platform. I miss mine. Enjoys yours. I am so envious!

I just traded for a MSAR 16' in bbl. I carry a bushmaster m4gery at work. I like the ergonomics of the MSAR so much I think I will start training with it at work and carry it for duty. If we go away from M4s this rifle will be my recomendation.:)

Wow, its impressive that your dept. lets you use something like that. It isn't often that the dept. in general switch things up much more than the standard M4 series of rifles.
Kudos to you for being able to have one of 'em.

I have only shot an AUG a few times. What are the proper techniques for Speed and Tac reloads. Anyone have a link to a video.

Until that day,

What kind of mag do you have in the gun in that pic? It doesn't look like the typical translucent ones from microtech to me. Are my eyes playing tricks on me?

I'm using the MSAR black 42 round ones in the picture and I also use / have the translucent 30 rounders .

Do they still make black ones? All I ever see are the translucent models.

I don't know if they still make the black ones but I prefer the amber. In fact, I have 4 of the black 42rd mags I'd be willing to trade for 4 42rd ambers or 3 42rd ambers & 1 30rd amber.

Very nice rifle, I carried an AUG P 16 inch for 15 years. How does that sight system work for entry. Not being a smart ass, just not formilur with that set up and its close up operations.

In the early 90's everybody was queer for the MP5s. I liked them but saw the wisdom in at least 1 or 2 223's in the stack for obvious reasons. My boss listened to the argument and granted me permission to carry a 223, I chose the AUG for it's overall length and quick on target abilitys.

Anyway very nice rifle.

Thanks :). On entries, I just keep both of my eyes open. I have trained using the "Bindon Aiming Concept" utilized with these ACOGs. It's pretty fast. When I was learning to use it, I use to get headaches, but when my brain got trained, it works! :)

I love using the AUG platform. My left arm recently got injured on the job, and it is now in the healing process. The lighter front end is a lot easier to move, than the M4 type carbines. Plus, the 20" gives me more velocity for my 5.56 duty ammo.

Every time I see an AUG it reminds me of the scene in Commando, where they are exchanging fire between the Aug and Shotgun.

The 16" is ideal, the 30 round is better for moving around, and the original fixed scope of 1.5" magnification is perfect, both eyes open.

Find a tree you can see at dusk, no lights in the house, no magazine or any rounds about! Look at the cluster of branches, then use the Swarsky, great light gathering capability, dark group of branches become individual ones.

Turn it sideways, shoot under a car, awesome.

For Police work, the word POLICE can be affixed to the inverted V at the top of the frame, first thing the other Cop looks at is this strange gun, nice to see the word POLICE. Nail file the corners of the safety catch, edges are sharp.

Go easy on the oil, it is plastic don't you know. I like the TruGlows on your pistols.
