What do you think about the Remington 700 SPS Tactical?

Hard to go wrong with it. I like the 20" barrel length. The low price makes throwing the rather pedestrian stock away a bit easier. Now you have me thinking.......how will the wife feel about me starting a third rifle build? JAE Stock? There is a Leupold sitting around here somewhere that would be perfect! Where is my credit card?

Good rifle, good price, lots of fun or serious use, whichever one applies.

Its a great rifle for the money and a good base to build one.

This is a real nice firearm. Out of the box on sand bags I was grouping 3 shots inside an inch at 100yards. I put a Leupold Mark 4 4.5X14 LRT MTR on it and handload 168gr Hordany bullets and have tight groups out to 300yards. I am working on getting to 800 yards now and boy what fun.

It's a great rifle! I just picked one up at the last gun show here in Raleigh for a change from my ARs. I have not fired it yet, but from what I hear, it is very accurate. I love the trigger, even out of the box. It has almost no creep and breaks like glass.

I love the trigger.

Contrary to popular belief...those triggers are adjustable. I adjusted mine down to 28 oz. and the same type trigger (Xmark) on my sons Model 7 308 SS went down to 36 oz.

I bought one as "project gun" to thread for a can. Dropped it in a 700P stock and put it through it's paces. After a few range sessions I ended up selling my LTR as the SPS edged it out in accuracy and I had no need for 2 20" .308's.

It's a great base rifle and I have no complaints versus the LTR (except for the stock, obviously - but if you plan to swap that out the differences are very minor).

Nice way to get ggod bbl'd action. The stock is not very good though so plan on dumping that.

A good barreled action in a lousy stock. Find a used 700P or LTR stock off an online auction site or a firearms forum, get a good scope, and practice a lot. If it don't shoot good, have a good gunsmith go over it.

I just picked one up for my fiance yesterday. She loves my dad's 700P in .308 and really wants to get into long range shooting. As has been said, the stock sucks. It's free floated only until you put pressure on it (like using a bipod) and then it flexes enough to touch the barrel. She can start off with it and replace the stock when she wants. Other than that it looks like a fine rifle. I can't wait to get out and try it this weekend.

I just picked up one in .308 and decided to mod the stock a bit. I used a 7/8 dowel and 40 grit, then 60 grit to finish. The barrel is floated all of the way to the action.

Although the 100 yard zero group wasn't special, .75, I had enough time and ammo to go to the 600 and no worries on the steel swinger. I have a Seekins base/rings holding a leupold M3.

I'll try the 7 and 8 next week.

The fiance and I took her rifle out for the first time today. She shot and I observed. A few shots to sight it in and then it was off to the races. She was shoting Federal GMM 168gr and ended the day with this 5 shot group @ 100 yards, .848" across - .308" = .540" Not half bad for a factory rifle shooting factory ammo. We should easily be able to push this under half MOA with some good handloads.

I picked one up a few months ago as well. I put a Falcon Menace 4-14x44 FFP scope on a Warne base & Warne rings. I put 10 rds in a 1.25" group. I'm not a very good shot. I'm in the process of replacing the stock with a HS police stock or a B&C Medalist (still debating). With the scope base installed, I find it a PITA to top load so I'll also be adding a DBM setup. It gets great reviews from what I've seen.

Have the 700 SPS in 270WSM and love it. Looking at the SPS Tactical 308 just because of the avaliablity of ammo. Dont get me wrong I love the WSM but it can get a little expensive because I dont load my own. Droped trigger down to 2.5# and w/ a Nikon 4.5X14. W/ Winchester 130gn. BST im gettin just under 1" @ 100 yds and right at 1.5" @ 200 yds. For what I use it for its hard to justify spending the money to hand load that round. But would really like to add a 308 to the safe.

Has anyone had a problem with the screw above the trigger? I just picked one up and noticed that it may be a problem.

Does the SPS come with the X-Mark Pro Trigger? It doesn't seem to but I just want to be sure.

As mentioned above, the SPS Tactical is a great foundation to build from. However, I'd take a different route. SPS Tacticals sell for $650ish and come with a throw-away stock.

Meanwhile, you can buy an SPS Varmint (with a 26" bbl) for $500ish. A gunsmith will usually cut/crown a barrel for you for less than $50 and odds are you'll end up with a better crown than Remington puts on them. It also comes with a disposable stock.

If you want to get really serious about it, buy the SPS Varmint and have the chamber re-cut with a match reamer. The newer Remington rifles are well-known for sloppy chambers with excessive free-bore. It would also be a good opportunity to get the action trued.

My personal pick in multi-position stocks is a McMillan HTG. They are a really great shape with a railed comb and a grip angle that is very versatile. On the other hand, if you want a real light-weight package (which compliments a 20" bbl), get a Manners stock.

I love my R700 SPS Tactical, very accurate just out of the box.

Any thoughts on the SPS Tactical vs. the VTR?

There was a young guy sighting in a VTR in .308 a couple of months back... piqued my interest.

At some point, I'd like to add a solid .308 for target/hunting purposes.

I almost bought a VTR. My thing was, I wasn't so sure about that triangular barrel with the cuts in the front. Even though it was heavier, I went with the SPS Tac.

I have an SPS in .223
its a sub MOA rifle at 100 meters
I haven't taken it out further on paper but can hit a steel plate at 500 meters when dialed in
Ive invested about 1300 in the rifle all said but its defiantely worth it

Here is mine with an old Falcon scope on it
I now have a Bushnell Elite 4200 on it
