I just recently purchased an LE6940. I also have an LE6920 on backorder. I am a complete rookie when it comes to an AR. So, having said that, I am open to any recommendations/suggestions/etc that any of you have.

Ammo reco's......

Right now, I have the following;

Larue LT129
Aimpoint M3 2 MOA
Insight vert battle grip quick detach
5 magpul pmag's
3 30 round colt mags
1 true hatred for the Obama Administration.

if new to AR you should read the general knowledge forums.

as puffy said, read the technical stickies- theres a wealth of information in there. everything you need to know, in fact.

as far as what to do with the weapon- you bought right and got a quality firearm, there's no upgrading you need to do. you can shoot it as-is for the next 10,000 rounds till you break a bolt or extractor or something, do a quick fix, and shoot another 10,000 rounds. i recommend getting a good start on that before you start tricking it out. as you shoot, you'll start to see what you need/dont need.. include reading in the training/tactics forum for ideas on where to take your training, and that will help you refine what you need/dont need. supplement all that with posting specific questions here/engaging in threads-in-progress. till then, all we can do is ask YOU a bunch of questions that you probably wont have answers to, and that wont help any.

hope all that makes sense

congrats on the buy, welcome to the forum.

Only thing I can see that would need to be added is a white light of some kind.

I've been using 6P LED's in Larue mounts with good success for patrol as well as SWAT.

you dont 100mph-tape a maglite to your handguards?

You started right. the 6940 is a hell of a gun. Since this sounds like your first AR, SHOOT IT A LOT. As other people said, shoot it and get a feel what works for you. It is going to be different for every person. Some like Eotechs, other Aimpoint. Different BUIS, rail covers, etc. You need to find what works best for you.

If I let my agency buy my gear that's how we would roll. Needless to say I started buying my own shit a long time ago. :D

I did find Federal 55 grain FMJ.....900 rounds for $509. Is there any reason not to use fmj to start?

You should always use FMJ in your AR.

You should always use FMJ in your AR.

Always? So we shouldn't take advantage of soft-points and hollow-points even if we're not forced to adhere to the Hague convention? Not even when hunting with an AR?

What's the reasoning here?

You should always use FMJ in your AR.

Could you elaborate as to why? I've shot all kinds (in the thousands) of JHP and JSPs through all my AR's without a hiccup.

Nice choice on the selection Stryker.

So what is your point? I am new to this and asked a question about fmj ammo..

kwelz

Sorry, I have been involved with self names Experts before that would swear that an AR can not function with anything except FMJ ammo. There is a lot of FUD out there about ARs. That is why I prefer this site. The experts here will not sugar coat things but they know their shit. They are going to tell you exactly what you need to know. A lot of people can't handle that.

No worries. Humor is always welcome. Posting one of the smiles behind your comment would help convey the humor. Folks do come here for the "definitive answer" to the questions that they are looking for. A lot of novice shooters could take your comment out of context since this is the Error Net, and take it as serious "gouge"/factual info, if one is not careful.;)

FMJ works well on most AR.

range time! :D

i've used FMJ, softpoints, and hollowpoints in both handloaded and factory ammo in my AR. barely a hiccup ever.

I'm thinking about the 6940 myself. How are the rails as far as grip. I wandered if they would be a bit rough on the hand after extended shooting.

The rifle is due in this coming Thursday, and I should have it by Saturday. I'll let you know after I have shot it for the first time.

6940 comes with rail covers. :) Fits the hand very well..

I would definitely add a tactical light to that rig, for sure. You gotta be able to see what your potential target is before you can safely engage.

I don't want to take over this thread, but if one were to go with the 6920 instead of the 6940, is there a way to secure the Surefire G2 as securely as you could to a 6940? I know you can put one on the 6920, but is the method as secure.

I just want to put an Eotech, G2, and BUIS with vertical foregrip. Not sure if I really need the rail system? Pro's, Con's?

yes, attaching to any rail is as good as attaching to a monolithic rail. especially for flashlights.

if you want to attach all of those, you'll pretty much need a rail.

I thought I could use the VFG grip that is used with standard handguards and take the handle off the 6920 and I would have room for the Back up iron sight and the Eotech. I was wrong?

where's the light go? you can get by without rails for all that, but you're not gonna like it.. your VFG will bend and twist, possibly break the plastic guard if you give it a good wallop. you also dont need a monolithic rail, though.. if you dont need FF, but want to attach shit, MI and i think Troy have inexpensive two-piece non-FF rails.

You can get a Troy DI for 150-200 new. If you don't want the Monolithic Rail they are a great option, and they are a bit thinner than the 6940 rails as well.

I was going to attach the light to the front sight on the 6920. From what I understood I could do that. I think I may skip the VFG for now. So I would put on a BUIS, Eotech or Aimpoint and secure the light to front sight.

Congrats on your new rifle, I just picked up my first AR type rifle two weeks ago(Rookie for sure) I have put about 1k rounds down the range so far. From my limited experience you need...

#1 ammo lots and lots of...

#2 Proper cleaning tools for the AR, I spent $100 on Dewey stuff!

#3 Quality time to shoot at the range without all your buddies...sight her in and get to know her(with the irons)

After that its all about fun, I put my 3x9 scope on today(from my M1A) and could hit the 400 yard steel plate everytime on 3x. That was fun, I also did some prone, sitting, standing, kneeling drills.

Have fun!

Chris

Your rifles should chew up most any kind of factory ammo you can get (including Wolf) so grab what's available and go find some good training. Pat Rogers, Vickers, Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, etc.
With the cost of ammo being what it is make your ammo use count with good instruction.
A .22 conversion kit might be a worthy addition. You can do quite a lot of training with it at minimal cost.
