I think my 6920 with 28 rounds, sling, and aimpoint is like 7.5 lbs.

Nope...nope! :)

As far as I'm concerned all my weapons fit into these two weight classes:

1. Acceptable
2. Too heavy

However, I'm much more concerned with overall balance than absolute weight. Light weight doesn't mean much if it doesn't balance well.

I weighed one of my carbines and it tips the scales at about 10-11lbs, depending on what's on it. It's a big boy though, with 13.2 rail and UBR. (Though its only a 14.5" m4 profile barrel)

Colt 6920 w/ rail
EOTech 553
Sling with QD attachments front and rear
3x magnifier on LaRue Pivot mout
Flashlight wit mount on rail
Stock Saddle
maybe a few small upgrades

10lbs even!

Have a few lowers to build on, those will be lighter.

I dunno. The Omega is only listed @ 9.7 ounces.

Here are some pics on the scale. It doesn't weigh past 6 pounds, so I have to break the upper and lower apart. :o

I think that given the fact that mine, a 16" BCM with standard handguards, weighs the same it's probably in the right ballpark. One scale or another may be off by an ounce or two, so there could be as much as 4 oz. of variation between scales I would think.

I fall into the "balance over weight" crowd. The weight is more of a concern when it comes to the application of the rifle. I would be much more concerned with the weight of my SBR for work as opposed to a SPR used on perimeter work where I could utilize a bipod.

Now I'll have to weigh my guns because I'm curious how much weight I'm luggin' around. :p

well.... every ounce of weight save... is a lesser load to carry

Or as Travis Haley says, "ounces lead to pounds".

Inspired by the thread, I put mine on a scale.

As shown, minus the dog, 9 pounds 4.25 oz. The 3x weighs 11 oz, so the gun is a lot lighter with it off. I find the balance OK (16" barrel).

How much do the real M4's weigh over in Iraq? Most likely they have a Colt 14.5 barrel, M2, Light, Lazer? What kind of weight are we talking about here?

lanceriley
06-03-09, 20:03
that's a good question. are they using govt profile 14.5 barrels too? or heavy barrel?

The vast majority are gov't profile. A select few have the SOCOM M4 barrel which is heavy under the handguards to better withstand sustained fire.

Haven't weighed them, but I do kow my POF is considerably heavier than my almost identically equipped M&P15T - maybe by a pound or more even! Piston guns do pack it on!
