Unissued/near new parts kit from the New Zealand Ministry of Defense on a DLO Sterling tube. Built up by John Andrewski a while back.

Simply outstanding build quality and attention to detail.....and one of the finest open bolt submachine guns ever produced.

Very nice... and if you get bored (not likely) you can put a white bucket on your head and make PEW PEW PEW sounds like a storm trooper.

Templar,

I have two of them here in excellent condition. Oh I wish that I could get these back to the U.S along with the Beretta Mod. 12S's and Vz-58. :(

Yep.....the Kingdom of Iraq was the first buyer of the Sterling series....even before the UK MOD.

I've heard from a fair amount of guys that there are still a lot of operational Sterlings running around over there.

And yeah......I'd LOVE to get my hands on a Beretta PM-12S........ :D

If I still had two kidneys, I'd sell one of them to buy a real Sterling SMG.

Had one just like that a few years back, but sold it in order to put money towards some land. It was such a sweet shooting subgun though, and boy do i miss it!!

The Sterling to my mind is still one of the smoothest shooting open bolt SMGs ever. It is reliable like the UZI but unlike the Israeli product, it is light.

If you've ever had the chance to shoot the MkV suppressed variant, you understand why some soldiers in the developing countries aren't in a hurry to go with an MP5SD.

I wish these were still in production.

Actually....it was the RSM, Sandy, who used a L2A3. Burton used an UZI.....

That looks frickin' sweet.

I've always had a thing for Sterlings. Got to fire one at Ft Lewis courtesy of the British Army during the mid 80's.

I have a converted MK VI waiting for me when I get back home.

Are you going to use the issue sling with it or was that just for authenticity for the pics? Any recommendations regarding accessories?

Hey Stony, you're going to love your new toy.....

I can extend the issue sling out far enough to use in the "patrol" position and if I need to transition to a handgun it falls to rest just fine. It is a very narrow sling though....if the Sterling weighed any more than it does, then I'd definitely put a BFG VCAS on it. Hell, I might do that anyway.

Magazines are what I'd try to scrounge up as quickly as possible. Ohio Ordnance used to sell their NIW mags at $100.00 for 3, but with the release of the Century Arms semi auto carbines they upped their magazines to $40.00 per.

The Sterlings were designed to run with Sten magazines if need be, but those things are such a pain in the ass to load. I haven't tried any in mine yet.

I'd also like to find some proper magazine carriers. As you know, the Sterling mags are some of the finest magazines ever designed, but they're shaped differently from every other mag out there. The shelf that they feature make them wider than a curved MP-5 mag. There was some Aussie or Kiwi selling some mag pouches on Uzitalk a while a go, I'll see if I can find him and let him know.

Finally......yes, I know it's completely worthles....but I want one......an original bayonet. :D I know a No.5 Mk.1 Jungle Carbine bayonet will fit fine. There are some Indian bayonets on the market, but I'd rather have some good Sheffield steel....

Stay safe man.

awesome weapon, templar. i was born in England and as a kid, the sterling and L1A1 were probably the first modern weapons that fascinated me as my dad used to take me to military shows and museums etc. i had a toy L1A1 that shot plastic pellets when i was about 5 or 6. so, i've always had a soft spot for those two particular weapons.
i also lived in singapore for a number of years and certain police were equipped with sterlings (singapore used to be under british rule). i remember trying to get as close as possible to look at them if i saw one. i wonder what the policemen thought when they saw this kid staring intently at their subguns.
of course, when star wars came out, i recognized them immediately. :)

Nice looking Sterling! Any more additional information you have would be really helpful. I'm just starting to learn more about them and contemplating trying to locate and purchase one. A suppressed one would be really slick as well but would you need a tax stamp for the full-auto and it being suppressed?

Yes, that would be two tax stamps ($200.00 machine gun, $200.00 suppressor) for a total of $400.00.

The integrally suppressed version was called the L34A1 in UK service and the Mk.5 in international sales.

Andrewski has built some, I believe Recon Ordnance might still have some.

I got to shoot one of these about a year ago. At first, I wasn't too excited. I've shot STENs, MP40s, Uzis, Thompsons and other open-bolt subguns, and none of them have been all that great compared to an MP5 or Colt SMG. Then I shot the Sterling. It controlled very well, patterned very well, and just seemed.... smooth. It didn't jerk about like most open-bolt guns. I can see why people were enamored with them, and it's easily the nicest-shooting open-bolt gun I've used. I'd love to have one.

They are extremely smooth shooters. Much more so than an UZI...

Here's a very novice shooter that I gave about 2 minutes worth of instruction too.

Nice vids Templar. Seems like just about every other video has the person holding onto the magazine while firing.

I thought this video of the Mk5 was pretty neat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRLcEHD2K5E&feature=channel. My Japanese sucks but it's the only decent vid I could find of the Mk5 and it shows a good example of the noise suppression.

Proper manual of arms is to NOT hold the magazine. There is a reason why there are guards punched out of/welded forward of the ejection port and aft of the muzzle to keep your hands there.

That Mk.5 vid is pretty good.

Right, my communication skills are lacking this morning. I meant to point out a failure on their part.

We just used to call it the SMG or SmeeGee. It was considered on of the priveleges of becoming a Senior NCO because you did'nt have to schlep an SLR (L1A1) around anymore. The annual weapons shooting test was done out to 300 metres with an SMG and they were always accurate.

Problems arose when they started to be used for Close Protection and CRW work. Thats when they were binned in favour of the H&K family.

For the most part, damn easy to maintain and use and for most infantry uses accurate enough. The wrinkle finish was mainly for civilian and police versions. Military issue versions had a matt black painted finish.

I noted a mention that they keep turning up in Iraq, not surprising considering where they were sold.

That's awesome. I'd love to get one, when my next KAC is complete.

Any chance you know anything about where to find good Type 100 clones?

ETA: Screw that. I'll take a Sterling.

Okay great looking gun! I just read both of those books. The zombie thing is a way outside my typical reading. I read the first book in a day. I liked the survival and action side of the books.

That suppressor is made by KGB Armament. I have talked to your friend about it .
I now have one just like it. I had John Andrewski build a Mk4 then had Andy Blaschik at KGB Armament integrally suppress it. It is the quietest SMG made. Andy is in Pompano Beach Florida.
Andy posts on www.uzitalk.com as L34A1 if that is a clue. Andy and John are both top notch, helpful and friendly. I like it so much I bought another Sterling Mk4 to leave unsuppressed.
