We got this guy as a puppy. He was found left by someone's door. I was oversees at the time, and the wife and kids fell in love with him.

Needless to say he is now a big dog, loves to hunt and fetch, deep bark, and a good nose for tracking. He is good with kids.

Problem is I have no idea what breed he is. All I know is that I like his spirit and his camouflage. :)

Good looking dog. I am a bit of a dog nut so I was thinking of few breeds off the top of my head. He looks like a mix. Though how old is he and how much does he weigh? You can also go to some vets and have a genetic test done on your fine pooch to see what breeds are in there. It is not cheap about $200 but it might be interesting. Off the top of my head I'd say there was pit bull in there. Depending on size could be Presa but that would be less likely. Good looking dog sounds like a great addition to any family.

Thanks for the replies.

He is about 16 months old, and about 65 pounds.

What is the hint that he may have some Pit in him? His white chest stripe?

I've seen Pit Bull and Shepherd crosses that looked almost identical to him.

Congrats on the find!

Wife says she had the blood sent away for the DNA testing two weeks ago. I will post the results when we get them.

Bless you for giving a stray a good home.

My dog is a mixed breed. There is genetic testing that's available. Go to www.whatsmydog.com and that will guide you to the Wisdom Panel web site. I think it's about a $100 or so.

Your dog looks great.

You've got a Mutt. :D

They're smarter and they live longer.

Seriously though checkout the Tennessee Brindle Coonhound. That might explain a lot of his tracking ability.

Body type seems very much like a hound-mix of some kind, eh?

IN- does he dig and root around a lot?

Looks like a Lab, with some boxer or pitt bull

his face looks identical to that of my lab, and it looks like the rest of him is pitbull.

He kind of looks like my old dog and she was an American Pitt Bull Terrier

they tend to have more of a lab face compared to the American Staffordshire Terrier which has a boxer type face.

My next door neighbor's mutt is a lab/pit mixand looks like she could be your dogs sister.

Doesn't seem to have the musculature of a Pit. Does he have that V-shaped bone along his forehead?

Seems a little small for a lab too, which is why I guessed hound.

What's his weight?

Pit Bull body type is extremely varied due to the nature of what they were bred for. The brindle coat screams "bulldog in bloodline somewhere" and the muscular head looks like that of a Pit Bull Golden Lab/buckskin brindle coated Pit Bull would throw pups like that. So would a lightly pigmented German Shepherd and buckskin brindled Pit Bull.

Also, the size of Pit Bulls range from 35 lbs to abotu 100 lbs with the gamebred fighting strains leaning towards 65 lbs and under.

What's the dog like in the presence of other dogs?

That is a Pure Bread street dog. They are a great breed, and will give you nothing but love attention and protection.

I don't think it's a pit mix. You can find similar markings amongst Catahoula Leopards.

Being that we're in Texas, I think the chances of him being a Catahoula mix are pretty high.

I don't see the pit bull which is usually evident in the shape of the head/jaw. He could very well be a mix of other dogs that were mixed too. Sometimes there's so much going on it's impossible to say. Just a mutt really which is another way of saying he's a GREAT dog. The best dog I ever had was so mixed we could only make wild guesses as to his background.

Edited to add: There is definately some Lab in him as others have said.

body, ears and tail are just like my lab/pit mix. Yours has a bigger looking head though, mine has a little more pit looking face. Same weight too, mine is 65 lbs. at 3 years old.

Smart as can be.

We just got the lab report in for the DNA test.

He is a mix...

Labrador Retriever
American Staffordshire Terrier
Dalmation!

As for getting along with other dogs, he is generally ok unless another dog tries to challenge him. When it happens, it is like a switch is thrown in his brain and he goes into combat mode. I have had to kick him off of other dogs who challenged him, yet ended up being tossed around like a rag doll.

He loves to play catch a rubber ball, to the point of being obsessed by it.

Great mix of dogs. One thing you might want to do is have your vet do periodic cancer screenings because both labs and amstafs type dogs are know for getting cancer which is how I lost one of mine(the pic I posted). On aggression my dad was walking mine and our neighbor who had a dalmatian (both dogs were friends) got between her and my father. My dog thought the dalmatian was going to attack my dad and she pinned her to the ground and bit he ear. About three seconds later my dog was licking the other dogs ear. She was very protective, and three (I know I'm going on and on almost done) Amstafs and APBT's have a VERY high pain tolerance an example my dog again first had a torn ligament in her right knee from running trough deep snow(manic). Then she got lyme disease, and after that cancer. Which she fought for about nine months until chemo didn't work anymore and she was put down on April 18. Good thing is you have a great dog from the looks of him and I hope you gives you and your family many years of joy. IMHO you couldn't pick any better groups of dog breeds to have in one dog.

Nice dog. I love that brindle look. I'm thinkng of getting another one. Had a Belgian Sheepdog, Beagle, mix of Lab, Terrier, and a Rotty. I miss them all.

Funny part is my insurance co. won't let me own a Rotty, Staffordshire, Akita, Doberman, but will let me own a German Sheperd. I'd like a German Shorthair or a Spaniel of some type, but don't have time to spend. Will know the right dog when I/we feel it.

redsox20, you had a nice-looking dog. What were the bloodlines? I had a gamebred Colby-Wallace linebred dog. 67 lb male. I adored him and still adore the breed. At some point in time I'd like to have another but I don't have the time to put in that's required. You're correct about the pain threshold. It's unbelievable. Mine could not be allowed around any other dogs owing to his breeding/bloodlines and wasn't worth a wet sock as a guard dog but I loved him just the same.

P.S.

You know I say a bunch of pictures on the internet and looking through wikiapedia I always thought she was an American Pitt Bull Terrier. Not many agreed but for legality sake they said she was a lab cross with what we don't know. There are just some places and people who think the only good pitt is a dead pitt. It's the owners my last 4 dogs have been some kind of pitt cross and only the first two have ever "attacked" another dog. My fist one went after an Akita yeah smart but that was what she thought her job was, and the other went after a dalmatian. My other dog is my avatar and she was abused she's afraid of everything, and the new one we just got is a puppy and he's only about 4 months old so don't know what he is. They said on petfinder that he is a Cane Corso. I don't think so I think he's more pitt-boxer mix never know. Not to competently hijack IN's thread but my sister went to two pitt rescue centers and they made(both) her fill out iirc a 4 page app online before she could even look at them. One form CT was to big and my dog didn't like him at all, and the puppy came from Rhode Island and he original came from SC. I think that's it sorry for the tangent that dog bite thread in First Aid got my blood boiling.
