I need some Army approved boots. Is there anything similar to Bates Lites? After I wore those in they felt like sneakers, they were my favorite. Even though I've earned the EGA, I don't want to have to deal with explaining a branch transfer to everybody that sees it - so rather than just buy a couple new pairs of Bates, are there any boots that handle similarly for the Army?

Also if anybody knows of a good place to buy online that would be perfect.
Thanks in advance.

I think you can remove the EGA with a wire brush.

These are what I use though I couldn't be sure whether they're army approved. They're very light and comfortable almost as good as sneakers.

"Sneaker" type boots are awful on rough, rocky, uneven terrain. For those environments you'll need a boot with more of a shank to it. Evaluate boots carefully by trying them on wherever you end up buying them.

Thanks for the link, but while I don't know what exactly constitutes approved and what isn't, I need a sand colored boot with coyote-ish sole.

If you can't figure it out, ask your command.

steve-oh,

From what I have seen the Army is fairly lax about the footwear. I have seen lots of different styles and makers being worn here. I am fairly certain that the Danners are GTG and I have seen troops here in theater wearing them.

Perfect. Thank you. Do you know of any that are better than others? Maybe something with decent support that's lightweight?

The GTX (and Danner's in general) have excellent support, and I'm sure they have a shank, though I don't know whether it's steel.

Try the Belleville 390DES.

dont skimp on bootsocks either. the good 10 dollar a pair ones they have at cash sales might be pricy, but they whisk sweat away, and they last.

I hear you on socks, I've already got plenty of smartwools.

I hear good things about the Oakley boots. Thoughts?

Army Regulation 670-1 dictates uniform standards. Basically for the boots, and tan boot without zipper and with a smooth toe meets standards. When deployed, they get even less concerned and allow boots that would not be allowed back home. I have Danner, Corcoran, Altama and McCrae Boots. None of them are the sneaker type, but they work for me. I have a narrow foot and I have been having one hell of a time finding boots that fit me well since we switched to the tan boot.

Comfy, light, easy to break in. Great if you're going to pure desert.

If you're going to Afghanistan, particularly in the vertical terrain, they'll last maybe 3 weeks. The rocks will tear them up only slightly less fast than they would a pair of Bates. Go for the Danners, in that case, insulated if you need it, otherwise for the ability to take abuse.

I would go with a pair of 5.11 Atac or Advance boots. I just got a pair of the Advance boots and they are unbelievable. Sooo comfortable and light weight, and you can romp over anything. The zip-up side is perfect because you can leave the laces tied and get in and out of your boots with a quick zip.
