My department has recently switched our rifle duty round from the 60 grn Hornady TAP to the 55 grn Federal TRU bthp. I have been shooting the TAP for several years as a LEO and I have no experience with the TRU. Is this a good choice or do I need to make a presentation to switch back to the old round?

What is the barrel length for of your M4's?

Federal Tru 223B is good ammo either should work well and I personnaly think it is a good switch.

Also Federal Tru 223B is a BTHP
Hornady is a Poly tipped bullet.

Penetraition might be a bit better for you compared to the Poly tipped load but that is just an opinion.

This will be shot using 10.5-16 inch barrels.

What are your potential engagement scenarios? Is there a high incidence of potential engagements around or involving vehicles or are you primarily doing urban entries? How about the potential of making long range shots in open conditions (ie. airports, parks, rural areas)?

Compare the terminal performance test data available from ATK (http://le.atk.com/pdf/223RifleDataBook.pdf) and Hornady (hornady_tap_report.pdf). Which round consistently meets the 12" minimum penetration requirement? How do the rounds compare against different intermediate barriers?

For Federal, the best performing loads are the 55 gr Barnes TSX (T223S), 55 gr bonded JSP (LE223T1 or P223T2), 62 gr bonded JSP (LE223T3), or 64 gr TRU (223L) JSP. With Hornady, I like both the 62 gr JSP (#83285) or 75 gr OTM (#8126N).
