Bonus points if you get the country he is in and the country he is from...

He's not a Yank. Probably British. The rifle appeared to be an FAL with a can, bipod and scope. Can't make out the scope from the fuzzy picture.

FN-FAL
Looks like harris bipod and possibly an acog and some sort of can

My guess would be a L1A1, and it's either Australian or New Zealand SAS in Afghanistan.

I agree. Looks like a FAL with a longer can, bipod and ACOG and a guy could be a contractor.

I agree on the FAL, and with the 6x6 in the background I'd say Australian SAS.

He is a trooper with 1NZSAS Group in A'stan, and I was pleasantly surprised to see the FAL.

Is it being used in the marksman role? With the FAL's operating system and inherently poor accuracy, I would be surprised.

FAL's and L1A1's are not inherently inaccurate....they do just fine.

FN worked on making a counter sniper variant a few years ago, got some great results, but decided to focus on the Mk. 17 SCAR-H.

We have a new guy that showed up who is a former NZ SAS man. I am sure he'll enjoy the pic.

Absolutely...

A secure mount, a clean trigger and the FAL does everything you'd want of an SPR/ DMR, and frequently more...

Don't sell the FAL short...

L1A1's aren't the most accurate semi-autos ever made, but they are some of the most reliable, they balance well, and they're definitely accurate enough.

I'll take a FAL over an AR any day. It may not be as accurate, but at combat ranges it works just great. It is the second most adopted rifle in the world next to the AK and comes in a real man's cartridge.

DSA has an accurized model that they put forth to the Army's SASS trials. For a Designated Marksman Rifle it works every bit as well as the M14, and is more robust.

I'm going to need to see some sources on that.

Straight from DSA's website.

I'm sure if this weren't true someone would have taken umbrage with it over a year ago when they first submitted this model.

That and a simple Google search brings up a few other topics where this is mentioned.

I see that it was submitted, but not that it outshoots an M14. Or a $5,000 M14 for that matter.

Meh. There are trade-offs on everything. The M14 isn't as robust as a FAL nor as ergonomic.
