View Full Version : Proper Way to Employ 12 O'Clock Light? [PICS]

Okay, I have decided to go with a 12 O' Clock light setup.

I did a quick test using some materials that I already had and found that I really liked the setup. My first question is to just confirm the gear I will be needing. I plan on getting an LMT fixed front and then adding an X300. Is this the generally accepted equipment? Does anyone know just how bad this will interfere with my sight picture? The M6 with its added laser is atrocious.

Secondly, I have a couple questions on how to properly employ this setup. As you can see in the pictures below, I am using the vertical grip as a stop for my hand. I pull the entire gun tight to my body using the forward grip as a stop. I haven't done any live fire with this technique, but I think it should help with recoil.
Then, I wrap my hand up above the rail and manipulate the light with my thumb.
Is this the correct technique?

Also, I was thinking about replacing my KAC vertical grip. Has the KAC PDW grip stop been released yet? Judging from the pictures I have seen it may be too small for my meaty hands. My hands may just ooze right over the KAC PDW grip stop.

I appreciate the input, thank you!

They're on the KAC website.

The X300 won't interfere with the sight picture. When positioned in front of the iron sight you'll still be able to see the sight.

Generally I prefer to have part of my hand on the grip and part on the rail. That allows moving the VFG farther forward and helps to get your hand as far forward as possible, which is a good thing. Using the support hand to pull the weapon back firmly into the shoulder is a valid technique that a lot of people teach. It helps mitigate recoil and improves shot to shot recovery time.

EDIT:
One more thing. On the fixed LMT front sight it looks like that huge knob will get in the way of manipulating the light. Is there any way to remove it?

Thanks everyone!
I think I am going to order one of those grip stops.

Rob, the pictures were excellent and completely answered my question of what the sight picture would look like.

I agree with JW, I prefer to have the VFG out a bit more.
It's hard to describe the exact position of the left hand without pictures, but if you imagine a proper iso grip on a pistol with the wrist locked forward and just put a VFG behind it.

In my preferred optimal position the tip of my thumb is right at the end of the HG with the VFG at about the rear 1/3 of the HG, permitting easy access to the mag, and good forward control. I like to have a distinct shift to get to the white light. To gain access I just drop my hand more on the VGF which brings my thumb back into position just behind the switch.

I personally like the Knight's VFG, it has a great radius for the pinkie/ring finger to nestle into and a nice transition from grip to rail without a big stupid lump. The short-coming is the tit that holds it in place doesn't hold up well to repeated removal and replacement or stupid pressure.

Here's how Robb does it (sorry Bob Dole moment).

I believe there's a tutorial on how to remove it and replace with a smaller nylock type nut floating around on here somewhere... ETA: Link (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?p=256697)

And I don't know what the timeframe for availability will be, but the upcoming DD front sight that Templar showed here (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=32014) looks like it might be a great contender for this application.
