View Full Version : Best ammunition for a 1/9 twist???
Ive found a pretty decent deal on some 55Gr 5.56, and i know for sure I will have no trouble running this through my AR, but what is the best all around ammunition available for the 1/9?? I have heard that the 1/9 will not properly stabilize a round above maybe 68Gr. Is this in fact the case? At what range is this effect truly felt? At what point will the impacts begin to keyhole while trying to use say a 75 or 77Gr?? Any help is appreciated.
I think you'll be fine with 55 or 62 grain rounds. I'm sure someone will take issue with it, but I've had great luck with Black Hills 77 grain out of a 20" 1/9 barrel, hitting torso sized targets beyond 400 meters very easily.
I've shot mostly 55gr bullets through my Colt 1:9, but I have had good luck shooting 69gr Sierra BTHP also. I didn't have any stability issues with this bullet.
some people with 1/9 barrels have no accuracy change, some do, only way to tell is buy a couple boxes of the heavier gr bullets and test it out at the range
Some 1/9 twist barrels will stabilize a 75 or 77 gr. bullet and some won't. You must test your barrel to be certain.
If I were you I'd buy a box of each and spend a day at the range doing some testing. 20 rounds of each should be more than enough to tell you if you're going to be ok or if you'll have trouble. From there on out, shoot the heaviest projectile that your barrel will accurately shoot.

In my experience 1x9 twist barrels shoot best with 68gr Hornadys and 69gr Sierra MatchKings.
In my experience 1x9 twist barrels shoot best with 68gr Hornadys and 69gr Sierra MatchKings. do you mean "best out of all available weights", or the heaviest bullet that it shoots well?
Back when I had 1x9 barrels, the 69gr SMK was the most accurate bullet I used. It's also one of the better terminal performers in that weight class.

Fiocchi loads a 69gr fmj which peforms quite well out of 1:9 barrels. Not the zippiest loading I have seen, but the accuracy is well above decent.
